    Pauline

An earnest soldier and Maid who recently graduated from military school. She was promoted to leadership at a young age because of her tactical talent and magic- a supernatural ability to inspire troops. (Her close relationship with Napoleon Bonaparte, her famous elder brother, didn't hurt either.) Though she's won every battle so far, the unavoidable deaths of soldiers under her command troubles her deeply.

  • Pragmatic Hero: Actually incorporated into a major gameplay element. In order to remain a player in the tumultuous world of revolutionary era French politics, Pauline has to carefully maintain good relations with each of the country's political groups, even the ones in direct opposition to each other.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Pauline gains a new outfit near the end of the game with a fancy tricolor cape. It signifies her role as the savior of France.

    Josephine

A widowed aristocrat who founded the Malmaison Salon. As a favor to Napoleon, a suitor of hers, she connects Pauline with employers and houses her at Malmaison. Though a kind woman in her own way, she is acutely aware that her survival depends on playing politics.

  • Ma'am Shock: She is pleased when Pauline protects her from riotous peasants; less so when Pauline berates them for attacking an "old woman".

    Desaix

A horseman who's gentlemanly, if solemn. Although he has superb strategic skills, he is troubled by doubts about the war.

  • Out of Focus: By virtue of potentially getting Killed Off for Real, Desaix goes from one of the most prominent party members for the first two-thirds of the game to never appearing in a cutscene again after his re-recruitment.
  • Plotline Death: Desaix is Killed Off for Real at the end of chapter 16 after Taking the Bullet for Pauline at the start of it. This can actually prevented should the player complete the chapter without having him take any damage after acquiring the two "Larrey's Notes" items.

    Paulette

An alcoholic yet capable cannoneer. She's in the war mostly for what she can cadge out of it.

  • Lady Drunk: Paulette is always seen with a bottle of wine in hand that she takes a swig from whenever she attacks. She actually Never Gets Drunk according to her profile, but she otherwise has the typical party girl attitude associated with this trope.

    Murat

A proud Hussar eager for combat.

    D'Eon

An elderly rifleman famed for his accomplishments in war and espionage. Unfortunately, his best days are behind him.

    Napoleon

A brilliant general who's Pauline's older brother.

    Cosette

A delicate scout who learned rifling at the Ecole Militaire, where she joined Pauline's clique. Her Maid gift- the ability to speak to animals- and well-trained skylark make her a capable tracker.

  • Friend to All Living Things: Cosette is always accompanied by a skylark, and is able to communicate with it as though it were a person.
  • Glass Cannon: She hits hard and is one of very few long-range units (allowing her to avoid most counterattacks), but two hits from anybody will kill her.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Cosette can apparently speak to all kinds of animals, though we only see her do it with her skylark companion.

    Adelaide

The young leader of the Secret du Roi spy network, which she rebuilt after its disintegration.

  • Bifauxnen: Adelaide dresses fairly androgynously as part of her job as a spy.

    Ernestine

A Bavarian riflewoman beloved by her troops for her courage and affability.

  • Eloquent in My Native Tongue: The Bavarian-born Ernestine speaks in broken French and has trouble pronouncing Pauline's name, but is shown to be a surprisingly efficient commander during battle, implying that she's actually quite sharp despite the language barrier.

    Nivernais

A charming intelligence officer of French origin and very androgynous appearance. She (as Pauline calls her) becomes entangled with the heroes during their search for the armoire de fer, a secret she has been tracking for some time...

...probably. She's not the most honest of people.

  • Ambiguous Gender: Nivernais dresses androgynously and has a voice that could easily belong to either an effeminate man or a masculine woman. They are alternatingly referred to as being male or female by various characters, seemingly based on each character's own assumptions, but no definitive statement is made on the matter. For what it's worth, the characters that are in most close contact with them refer to them using male pronouns. For her part, Pauline insists that they are female and is confused why anyone would think otherwise.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: Pauline's forces must pursue Nivernais through two levels, both of which have excruciating time limits...although given that she wields a powerful rifle and always double-hits, it's not really clear why she bothers.

    Nicolette

  • Remember the New Guy?: Nicolette is a rather egregious case. She doesn't appear or get mentioned at any point prior to her recruitment and doesn't actually appear during her recruitment scene, only after it. Debatably justified by the nature of her recruitment not requiring her to take part in it herself (she's a promising new talent who had been working under Napoleon until he decided to send her to Pauline's unit).

    Bridget
One of the commanders of the Anti-France Coalition.

    Philipp

    Fernand

  • Face of a Thug: Fernand is a loyal ally to the French army but is so shifty-looking (as in, his portrait is a palette swap of a standard thief enemy) that he's regularly mistaken for an enemy by his own allies.
  • Mauve Shirt: Fernand, a soldier of the French Army with a Face of a Thug, shows up a few times and receives some amount of characterization, but merely has the appearance of a slightly altered version of the generic thief enemy type and never joins the player's army in any capacity beyond as an uncontrollable Guest-Star Party Member. Despite this, he is vital to ensuring that Desaix survives his Plotline Death, as he gives one half of the notes needed to keep him alive if the special objective is completed during his debut chapter.

    Heinrich

  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Heinrich, a recurring boss character, has a variant of this. His unique passive ability "Gentleman" gives him a large attack boost when pitted against male opponents at the cost of giving him a severe attack penalty when up against female ones. Unfortunately for him, the player's party is predominately female.
