Major characters:

    Thomas (Fox)
STR: 3
AGI: 4
INT: 4
CHR: 5

Formerly a journalist working for Woodpecker TV, Thomas was framed for a crime he didn't commit while investigating the mayor's corrupt affairs.

  • Badass Normal: Was a news reporter, who can become a competent fighter and prison escapee based on the player's actions.
  • Badass Bookworm: Much like the above trope, the player can make him an incredibly smart person and if done right, can break out of jail easily.
  • Clear My Name: After being convicted of drug possession on false pretenses, it's up to Thomas to prove his innocence by exposing the mayor's corruption.
  • Cunning Like a Fox: True to his species, Thomas is crafty and good at thinking on his feet.
  • Guile Hero: Thomas' defining trait. In a facility filled with hardened prisoners, his wit is his best asset.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Thomas is a dedicated journalist, and though he officially works for an established TV network, he isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty with his own independent reporting. Depending on the backstory the player chooses for him, he can play even more into this (such as being a sneaky private investigator or being a war correspondent).
  • Interspecies Romance: Thomas' ex-girlfriend is a mink. In his college days, he also had eyes for a rabbit.
  • Multiple-Choice Past: At the start of the game, the player can choose what kind of journalist Thomas used to be, which confers different bonuses and penalties:
    • Broadcast Journalist: Starts with the 'Affinity' and 'Bookworm' specialties and +1 Charisma. Thomas' Rapport gain is increased by 30%, but he can't shower without soap and will lose 1 Mind when searching through trash (unless he's wearing gloves).
    • Undercover Journalist: Starts with the 'Crafter' and 'Secret Compartment' specialties and +1 Agility. Thomas' inventory gains an extra slot, but re-rolling a skill check with a less than 30% chance of success will cost 2 Focus Points instead of one.
    • War Correspondent: Starts with the 'Robust' and 'Weapon Practice' specialties and +1 Strength. Thomas gains Thick Fur which allows him to soak up extra damage and sleep without a blanket, but he can't automatically forget Nightmares and must take 2 sleeping pills to sleep.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Escaping the prison without exposing the mayor will turn Thomas into a fugitive, all but confirming his guilt to the people of Boulderton. This forces him to flee to the neighboring Aslovia to begin a new life.

    Reed (Red Panda)
A lawyer who's been Thomas' best friend since college. Reed does his best to assist Thomas from outside the prison, trying to help his friend clear his name.
  • A Friend in Need: Reed sticks by Thomas throughout his entire prison stay, working to help him escape and expose the mayor, despite receiving direct threats from Angelo. He mentions that he's helped Thomas out of previous jams, though this is greater than anything he's had to do before.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Was known to be a nerd and a goofball by his friends, but eventually became a competent lawyer who's got some badass tricks up his sleeve. Later on, he's even able to take out a thug with a sneak attack.
  • Crusading Lawyer: Not only does Reed represent Thomas legally, but he's also very dedicated to taking down the corrupt mayor and his allies. He also doesn't seem to charge Thomas anything for his services.
  • Disguised in Drag: Reed dresses up as a stripper in order to sneak into the Fallen Angels club's backstage area, though the outfit he uses isn't necessarily a woman's.
  • Rules Lawyer: A flashback of Thomas and Reed during their college days shows the two playing a Dungeons & Dragons-like game, in which Reed is very insistent about following the rules to the letter. This foreshadows his future career as an actual lawyer.

Prisoners:

The various inmates of Boulderton Penitentiary.
    Bob (Black Panther)
STR: 5
AGI: 6
INT: 4
CHR: 5

  • Another Side, Another Story: In future updates, Bob will be given his own playable story, offering a different take on the events of the game.
  • Hero of Another Story: Bob has his own objective within the prison: finding Fenrir the wolf. He does this in the background over the course of the game.
  • Racial Face Blindness: Uses this against Thomas who claims he resembles someone. Naturally Bob wants to hide the fact that he is a private eye on a secret mission.
  • The Infiltration: Bob is secretly a private detective pretending to be a prisoner.

    Bam (Cat)
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Bam is convinced that the prison is the site of a paranormal conspiracy, and seems to be working to fight against it during his stay. Considering Wilbur can seemingly use Blood Magic his belief in something paranormal going on may hold some water…

    Crunchy (Crocodile)
  • Abusive Parents: His mother was a prostitute and he did not know who his father was. His stepfather used his hard earned money to pay off his gambling debts and after drinking, he would often drag young Crunchy into a small dark room and beat him up.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Is a powerful fighter in his own right and can be seen protecting Alex in some instances.
  • Didn't Think This Through: During a gang war in the cafeteria, Crunchy is seen preparing to fight John the Tiger. Rumors about the man's fighting prowess was in abundance and doubly so if Thomas helped Alex gain info on him which proves this fact, so that's on him.
  • Self-Made Orphan: He killed his abusive step-father at the age of 12.
  • Split Personality: Heavily implied who Bonnie is. Sometimes the player can caught Crunchy acting extremely off character, flirty to even the male prisoners before he snaps out of it.
  • The Brute: Crunchy is a large, muscled crocodile who's one of the biggest residents of Boulderton. He loves to fight, and he has a habit of intimidating and bossing around other prisoners.
  • The Dragon: Is this to Alex the Lion, serving as his bodyguard and major muscle. The two are often seen together, and Crunchy protects Alex when he might otherwise be vulnerable (like when he makes phone calls).

    Perry (Platypus)
  • Con Man: Perry swindles other prisoners by promising them large returns on a too-good-to-be-true gold mining investment. In classic Ponzi fashion, he uses the funds earned from new marks to pay back the investments of older ones.
  • Healthcare Motivation: It turns out that Perry is using the money earned from his scams to fund a liver transplant for his dying father.

    Diego (Alpaca)
A carefree inmate who claims to be able to see fairies.
  • Freudian Excuse: Diego became a drug addict to cope with his previous horrible life.
  • Offing the Annoyance: One of the first quests the Barbershop can give you is to beat Diego up (and send him to the medbay) because other prisoners find him obnoxious.
  • The Stoner: Diego is always under the influence of some drug or other, causing him to behave very bizarrely.

    Evan (Rhinoceroes)
One of the two top fighters affiliated with the Big Foot Gang.
  • The Brute: Is a physical powerhouse who enjoys using his physical might.
  • Co-Dragons: Shares this trait with Bill, working for Jumbo the Elephant as their subordinate.
  • Fitness Nut: Likes to workout with Evan and often seen lifting with Bill the Buffalo.

    Ray (Horse)
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Ray always wears a cone on his head, which he uses to proclaim that he is a unicorn.
  • Camp Gay: Ray is very flamboyantly gay, and is often seen flirting with other male prisoners.
  • Hidden Depths: Was former fashion designer and was able to able to deduce the age of a female deer by the pictures belonging to John.

    Bill (Buffalo)
One of the stronger inmates of Boulderton Penitentiary, Bill and his friend Evan serve as the right-hand men for Jumbo the Elephant.
  • Berserk Button: Bill is very particular about the way other prisoners talk to him, and using a word that he finds disrespectful can immediately anger him.
  • Co-Dragons: Share this position with Evan to their boss, Jumbo.
  • Fitness Nut: Shares this trait with Evan the Rhino, both of them can be seen workingout in the prison yard.
  • Those Two Guys: Is often seen with a Rhinoceros named Evan, who is his workout buddy and fellow gangmate.

    John (Tiger)
A criminal with a stoic personality and likes to be by himself.
  • Retired Badass: John is an ex-mercenary rumored to have a high body count. His days of killing are over, but rumors about his past still intimidate many of the other residents of Boulderton Prison.
  • The Stoic: John's expression and tone hardly change, and he's disinterested in conversing with, fighting with, or making friends with the other prisoners.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Is an avid smoker. Players can give him either a rolled-up mint or a premium cigarette to gain lots of rapport points.

    Wilbur (Goat)
  • Blood Magic: Wilbur is able to use several types of blood-related mystical skills in battle, including Blood Bind (which heals him when his opponent is hurt) and Chaos Rebirth+ (which has a high chance of reviving him whenever he's downed).
  • Cult: Being obsessed with mysticism, Wilbur leads a small cult with two other prisoners (Miguel and Pickman). The three of them seem to want to resurrect an ancient deity using blood, and they're willing to commit acts of violence to obtain it.
  • Mind Control: Wilbur knows how to use hypnosis to temporarily mind-control other prisoners.

    Miguel (Tapir)
  • Hypno Pendulum: Miguel uses the swaying of his trunk to try to hypnotize other prisoners.

    Lin (Pangolin)
  • Properly Paranoid: Lin is constantly afraid that other prisoners will try to steal his scales, since they're rumored to have medicinal properties. This turns out to be well-founded, as he's been attacked over this rumor in the past.note
  • Tunnel King: Lin is naturally good at digging (and might be able to more easily escape), but chooses to stay in prison out of fear of what's waiting for him outside.

    William (Tortoise)
  • Wise Old Turtle: William is exceptionally old, and he claims to know a lot about the prison and its inhabitants. Unfortunately, he speaks so slowly that Thomas doesn't like to talk to him much.

    Sam (Donkey)
Thomas' cellmate during his stay at Boulderton Prison. He wants nothing more than to stay out of trouble so his parole can go through, allowing him to reunite with his fiancée, Nicole.
  • Mr. Fixit: Mentions to Thomas that he is a mechanic nicknamed 'Ratchet' on the outside during their first meeting. His Bond Skill, Repair(+), allows Thomas to repair items.
  • Nice Guy: He's unfailingly nice and pleasant towards Thomas and the other inmates.

    Grey (Tree Frog)

    Jimmy (Giraffe)
  • Cool Shades: Averted. His glasses are actually myopia glasses.

    Whitey (Rabbit)
  • Saw a Woman in Half: His signature trick was called the "Death Slice".
  • Stage Magician: Whitey is from a family of magicians, and was the head magician of his troupe.

    Franklin (Zebra)
  • Gadgeteer Genius: When first befriended, he's trying to build a robotic vaccum cleaner.
    • He recognize the exact model of an handpalm scanner by it's description (having read about it in a magazine), and make a device able to bypass it with parts from a digital watch and an handheld game console.

Prison Staff:

    Captain Bruce (Mastiff)
Boulderton Prison's guard captain. A bossy hardass who directs the other guards and oversees day-to-day affairs.
  • Dirty Cop: Bruce is corrupt, monetizing large parts of the prison and often encouraging prisoners to do him "favors" for perks and benefits. He's also secretly allied with the prison's Big Foot gang. Bruce will be brought to justice if the player works with Caesar to give him a fake, incriminating ledger, which will later cause the warden to demote him.
  • Large and in Charge: Is one of the largest people in the prison, and is in charge of the other cops.
  • The Captain: Bruce is the captain of the prison guards, and has the most control over the prisoners' daily lives.

    Deputy Billy (Bull Terrier)
The prison's deputy captain. Is nicer to the prisoners than Bruce is, though he isn't above using them to earn some extra cash.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: While he sells items to criminals for personal gain, he does not collaborate with the boss of gangs like Captain Bruce and is overall a more pleasant individual.
  • Corrupt Quartermaster: Though he's the guard responsible for giving out supplies, Billy has a side business where he sells extra amenities (including snacks, hygiene products, and bedding) to prisoners for hefty amounts of money.
  • Field Promotion: If the player gets Bruce demoted by handing him the fake ledger, Billy will receive an abrupt promotion, replacing his old boss.
  • Mook Lieutenant: Billy is Bruce's deputy, and generally gets the work Bruce doesn't want to do (like distributing mail and amenities to the prisoners).

    Owen (Husky)
A guard who oversees the mailroom and storeroom.
  • Surveillance Station Slacker: Owen uses Thomas' mailroom work as an excuse to watch basketball in his security station. This means he isn't paying as much attention when Thomas isn't doing what he's supposed to...
  • The Password Is Always "Swordfish": The password to the storeroom is the scoring stats of Billy's favorite basketball player (who scored 2,481 points in one season).

    Beth (Poodle)
The prison's doctor, who regularly sees patients who have gotten sick or injured.
  • Caretaking is Feminine: As the prison's doctor, Beth seems to be the only woman working there.
  • Hospital Hottie: Beth is apparently attractive, and Thomas has plenty of options to try to woo her romantically.

    Father Anderson (Border Collie)
A priest who works part-time as the prison's chaplain.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Anderson seems innocuous when first introduced, but he turns out to be a critical part of Thomas' investigation into the Mayor.
  • Dirty Old Monk: Though Anderson pretends to be devout, he turns out to be a frequent customer of the Fallen Angels brothel, and he uses his work at the prison as an excuse to visit the area more often. More importantly, he's the patron of Iris, a sex worker who knows about the mayor's corruption.
  • Graceful Loser: Surprisingly, after he realizes Thomas has him dead to rights with evidence of wrongdoing, he thanks the fox and is fine with being reported as part of him wanted to stop, but couldn't find the courage to do so.
  • Stealing from the Till: Anderson is embezzling money from the church to fund his sexual habits, and it's heavily implied that the "donation" money given to the church goes straight to him.

    Father Enrique (Heeler)
A priest who replace Anderson once the latter is exposed.
  • Good Shepherd: Enrique is noted to use ordinary words and to refuse the "old-fashioned way of preaching", instead embracing modern technology. He also doesn't sell overpriced religious items.
    • He will give you an e-book explaining religious texts should you raise your rapport with him.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He will allow you to keep the Chapel Volunteer Permit, and make sure you're paid for your work.

    Warden Clark (Rooster)
Boulderton Prison's warden. A paraplegic rooster who's in charge of the entire prison, though he leaves most day-to-day affairs to Captain Bruce.
  • Wardens Are Evil: Averted. Warden Clark has positioned himself as a lenient, benevolent figure who focuses on rehabilitation more than corruption, which explains some of the prison's more lax protocols. Unfortunately, Captain Bruce is usually the one overseeing things, and he's a lot less nice.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: At least to some degree. If he is handed the evidence of Bruce's dirty dealings, he ends up punishing him through a demotion.

Antagonists:

    Angelo (Wolf)
The Mayor’s "Campaign Manager". Attempts to bribe Thomas into silence, if that doesn’t work he has him framed on drug charges and sent to prison.
  • The Dragon: As the Mayor’s "Campaign Manager", he does most of the dirty work that the Mayor can’t be seen doing.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Speaks in a polite tone and uses "nicer" sounding terminology to downplay the Mayor’s and his crimes. Ultimately it becomes mocking when things don’t go his way and doesn’t hide that he’s an unrepentant hitman or fixer.
  • Red Baron: The Eraser.
