Characters / Babylon Five Technomages

Go To

    In General

  • Cyborg: The technology the techno-mages use consists of bio-technological implants. The process of installing the implants and adjusting to them is excruciatingly painful.
  • Dark Secret: They were created by the Shadows to become warriors of chaos and destruction and to be an Evil Counterpart to the Vorlon-created telepaths, but this was kept secret from the mages by the Circle.
  • End of an Age: After the Shadows reawaken in 2259, the techno-mages decide to leave known space. The other characters regard their passing as this.
  • Phlebotinum Rebel: The original techno-mages revolted against the Shadows and spread the technology.

    Elric

Elric

Played by: Michael Ansara

The first techno-mage we're introduced to, in the Babylon 5 episode "The Geometry of Shadows". Later revealed to have been Galen's teacher and to have died not long after the techno-mages reached their hiding place.

  • Karmic Trickster: After Londo tries to take advantage of Elric for political capital, Elric spends days harassing him with illusions, awful music playing at all hours, unwanted bank account transfers, and everything else a technomage can do with their powers.
  • The Mentor: He was Galen's teacher.
  • Parental Substitute: After Galen's parents died, Elric took him in and raised him as his ward and apprentice on the planet Soom.
  • Properly Paranoid: He is frequently worried about being taken advantage of on both a major scale by the Shadows and a more incidental scale by opportunists like Londo (who wants to fake being endorsed for emperor by a technomage due to Centauri superstition looking favorably on this). Both concerns are valid.
  • Protectorate: Before the techno-mages left known space, Elric watched over the low-tech native people of Soom.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: A very subtle, yet effective, one to Londo.
Elric: Oh, I'm afraid you're going to have to spend the rest of your life paying for your mistakes. Not this one, of course, it's trivial...but there will be others.
Londo: What are you talking about?
Elric: You are touched by darkness, Ambassador. I see it as a blemish that will grow in time. I could warn you, of course, but you would not listen. I could kill you, but someone would take your place. So I do the only thing I can: I go. Oh, I believe it was an endorsement you wanted, a word or two, a picture to send to the folks back home, confirming that you have a destiny before you...Well, take this for what little it will profit you; As I look at you, Ambassador Mollari, I see a great hand reaching out of the stars. The hand is your hand. And I hear sounds, the sounds of billions of people calling your name.
Londo (visibly excited): My followers?
Elric: Your victims.

    Galen

Galen

Played by: Peter Woodward

Who do you serve and who do you trust?
Galen's Questions

  • Abusive Parents: His parents, who were both techno-mages, fell spectacularly out of love, used him as a pawn in their constant arguments, and eventually killed each other. His father was also physically abusive at least once.
  • Irony: He named himself Galen after the physician because he wanted to be a healer. It turned out to be the one area of techno-magic he had no talent for.

    Isabelle

Isabelle

Played by: Sophie Ward

    Alwyn

Alwyn

Played by: Edward Woodward

A friend both of Elric and of Galen's late father. Alwyn refused to go into hiding with the other techno-mages, remaining as protector of the farming colonists on the planet Regula IV.

  • Casting Gag: Edward Woodward is the father of Peter Woodward (Galen).
  • Protectorate: He watches over the colonists of Regula IV and protects them from exploitation by EarthGov.
