Jaune Arc

The Arc family's youngest child and only son, who wants nothing more than to be a Huntsman despite his hilarious lack of ability. He decides to become one anyway... and in the process becomes the leader of the White Fang and a legend in all the ways he never wanted.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: He first transfers Aura to another living being (specifically Albus, a horse) because he doesn't know that is not a normal thing to do with Aura. It takes Kaz pointing this out for Jaune to realize that it is his Semblance at work.
  • Adaptational Dumbass: Zig-zagged. The Jaune of canon is of average intelligence and average social skills (in that he can see basic social cues). When it comes to common sense and knowledge, the fic's Jaune is dumbed down from his canon incarnation while keeping his strategic mind. For example, he's oblivious to the point where he does not see Adam mistrusts him and wants him gone, instead believing they are becoming friends.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: He wants to go to Beacon and be a world-renowned hero that is admired. He gets the fame, recognition, and enters Beacon... as the leader of the revolution that just defeated Ozpin and brought Vale to its knees. As Jaune himself thinks...
Jaune: (internally) "Goddamn fucking piece of fucking shit FUCK fuck FUUUCK, This was NOT what I had in mind when I said I wanted to go to Beacon!"
  • Becoming the Mask: Over the course of the story, Jaune takes conscious (and unconscious) steps to become the leader and strategist the world thinks he is, because he realizes he has become a symbol. This is most obvious when he rallies the White Fang members to defeat Qrow.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Kinda. His appearance (and Amber's lightning) frightens off Cinder and prevents her from forcing the White Fang to serve her.
  • Boring, but Practical: He argues that Crocea Mors is this, because it's sharp, tough, provides offensive and defensive power, and doesn't have any complicated transforming parts that would require constant and expensive maintenance, unlike a sniper rifle/scythe or something equally ridiculous (Elsewhere, Ruby received the bizarre impulse to beat the hell out of any blondes that she met).
  • Butt-Monkey: He is often flung around and humiliated, particularly during the fight against the Atlas mech where he gets stuck in an unfortunate place while attacking it.
  • Color Motif: White. He wears a white cloak, armor, sword and shield, and his Aura is also white. Jaune is an innocent soul with a Semblance that lets him heal others and enhance their strength. He is also a larger-than-life figure that some White Fang members see as divine, particularly when he uses his Semblance to call them back from the brink of death.
  • Cool Horse: He gains one named Albus after he leaves home, who becomes his own loyal steed...after he steals her from Amber in a hurry to get away from home.
  • Drunk on Milk: Literally, at Junior's bar after his fake transcripts are rejected. Junior theorizes that his grief caused his brain to break.
  • Dumb Blonde: He is very ignorant to put it lightly. Jaune is such an oblivious Wide-Eyed Idealist he doesn't comprehend the White Fang is a terrorist organization until it's bluntly explained to him. That's just one example of his idiocy.
  • Healing Hands: He uses his Aura to bolster other's and bring them back from near-death.
  • Hero Stole My Horse: He steals Amber's horse, although he gives her his savings to make up for it.
  • Horseback Heroism: How he makes his grand debut to the White Fang while saving them from Cinder, Emerald and Mercury.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Much like in canon, he gains a massive crush on a Schnee girl. Here, however, it is Winter that he gains said crush on, rather than her sister Weiss.
  • Memetic Psychopath: In-Universe. Adam thinks he might have drawn the Grimm to the Schnee labor camp via psychological warfare (it was complete coincidence), and rumors have been spreading about his followers cutting off their faunus parts for him (they're actually humans that he saved along with the Faunus from the camp).
  • Mistaken for Badass: His reputation for being an utter badass begins when the White Fang mistake Amber's lightning for his, and continues with supposedly planning a Grimm invasion (it was a coincidence), hijacking control of the Paladin sent against him (it was Penny), defeating two Huntresses (Yang surrendered rather than get Ruby involved), and defeating most of the White Fang mooks at the hospital (Pyrrha's work). Most of his reputed badassery comes from people refusing to believe that he really didn't have any ulterior motives and some of his victories were partially due to dumb luck. That said, he has grown into the role.
  • Magnetic Hero: Many come to follow Jaune because of his charismatic and genuine disposition. Kaz and the New White Fang idolize him and see him as a perfect leader and symbol for their cause. Pyrrha grows to admire and support him because he treats her like a normal person.
  • Mistaken Identity: Qrow, Ozpin, Taiyang, and Ruby all believe Jaune (who is wearing a white cloak) is Summer Rose.
  • Oh, Crap!: His reaction after realizing he forgot to disarm the traps at the Arc manor when getting Crocea Mors, causing the whole place to explode violently and forcing him to get the hell out of the area.
  • The Paladin: The world believes he is this and as the story goes on, he takes steps to become the shining knight and liberator he is thought to be. He also has the healing powers aspect.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: He is a member of the wealthy and influential Arc family who is so oblivious to what's going on in the outside world he does not know the White Fang is a terrorist group.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Not verbally, but internally he tends to let loose a stream of curses when things go awry.
  • White Stallion: His (stolen) horse, Albus, is a brilliantly white steed. It plays into his image of heroism, due to his above-mentioned Color Motif.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: He sees the best in almost everyone and is shocked to learn the White Fang has become a terrorist organization. It takes a lot of explaining for him to comprehend many of them are not good people.

Adam Taurus

The leader of the White Fang, who really has no idea what to do with Jaune.

  • Adaptational Heroism: He has none of his canon counterpart's instability and Yandere tendencies. The first chapter even has him apologize to Blake and try to start their relationship over after Jaune takes over Vale.
  • Butt-Monkey: The refugees from the camp Jaune liberates get dumped on him. Hilarious overwork ensues.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He will calmly order people to their deaths, but only if they're fighting for a cause they can truly believe in. Now that Cinder doesn't have the Fall Maiden's power to threaten him with, he has no intention of sacrificing his men for the sake of her machinations. He also genuinely tries to help all the faunus refugees from the dust camp get re-settled.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: In his internal monologue, he notes that his terrorist actions are because, at the end of the day, they mean that the Faunus are acknowledged, whereas peaceful protests just weren't getting through to anyone.

Pyrrha Nikos

A celebrity Huntress-in-training, who finds herself Lonely at the Top... at least until she meets Jaune, the one person who has no idea who she is and treats her like a normal person.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Jaune does not attend Beacon so she is friendless and more isolated than in canon. She is miserable before she bumps into Jaune while out in Vale.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Since Jaune does not attend Beacon Academy in this fic, Pyrrha's life there is incredibly lonely.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Without Jaune there to befriend her, Pyrrha's celebrity status leaves her even more isolated than in canon. She cannot even go to get coffee without being swarmed by fans.
  • In Spite of a Nail: She falls for Jaune for the same reasons she did in canon. Primarily because he does not recognize her.

Miltia and Melanie

Twins who serve at Junior's bar, and accompany Jaune on his crazy schemes.
  • Ascended Extra: They become Jaune's second-in-commands and are main characters who keep Jaune from exposing his secrets or getting himself killed.
  • Dark Secret: From Jaune's perspective, the fact that behind closed doors, both Melanie and Miltia are enormous dorks that wear things like croc shoes is treated like this.
  • Pet the Dog: They comfort Jaune after his faked transcripts are rejected. Note that this happens when he is a stranger to them.
  • Sibling Team: They tend to team up against opponents and cover each other during battle.

Qrow Branwen

Ruby and Yang's uncle, and Ozpin's wetworks man. Also a drunken slacker, but still terrifying to fight.

  • The Alcoholic: He is always drunk and even drinks during battle. During the fight at the hospital, he's so intoxicated he thinks his white-cloak-wearing enemy has a cloning Semblance (in reality Qrow is seeing alcohol-induced doubles of Jaune and Pyrrha) and Neo is Summer Rose, who is dead. She's initially terrified but uses his drunken misconceptions (and her illusions) to convince him he is right.
  • Delirious Misidentification: At the hospital, he's so drunk he thinks Neo is Summer Rose when he grabs her and sees her "silver" eyes.note  Some illusions from Emerald and Neo help solidify his misconception and he thinks "Summer" (actually Jaune) is attacking him.
  • The Dreaded: Many the White Fang members that recognize him on sight and accept their incoming deaths.
  • Red Baron: Qrow has many epithets to the point of parody. They include: the Left Hand, the Scarecrow, the Scythe of the South, the Scythe of Ozpin, and Ozpin's Executioner.
  • Teeny Weenie: According to Tai, at least. It's how he realized that Qrow's apparent corpse was fake.
  • The Unintelligible: He is so drunk during the hospital fight that Pyrrha cannot understand a word he is saying.

Amber

The Fall Maiden, and victim of an impromptu horse theft that results in Jaune getting ambushed in her place. She spends most of the story trying to get her horse, Albus, back.

  • Dramatic Irony: She despises the person who stole her horse Albus, completely unaware that by stealing it, the thief inadvertently saved her life.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: When she goes to Junior's in another attempt to retrieve Albus, she reveals herself as the Fall Maiden. Junior, having no idea what that's supposed to mean, flatly brushes it off without much thought, much to her own shocked confusion.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She never encounters Cinder so part of her Aura is not stolen.

Cinder Fall

Schemer, villain, and unofficial Tylenol poster girl.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Because of Jaune's interference, she has none of the Fall Maiden's power or the support of the White Fang.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: By the time of the prologue's events, she unintentionally made things easier for Jaune by getting the more radical and violent members of the White Fang killed in her failed attempt to cause the Breach.
    • In a later chapter, her attempts to kill Emerald in an attempt to silence her are hinted to have planted the seeds that would result in Emerald pulling a Heel–Face Turn and becoming an ally to Jaune.
  • Underestimating Badassery: She underestimates Jaune's leadership, ability to rally the White Fang, and sheer dumb luck.
