Alzano Empire

Government

    Alicia VII

Alicia VII

Voiced By: Saori Onishi (Japanese), Felecia Angelle (English)

The current empress of Alzano and the mother of Rumia.
  • Covert Pervert: Despite looking like a rather serious person and being the queen of a country. Her love advice to Rumia is basically telling her to assault Glenn.
  • The High Queen: This is how she acts towards her people. In private she's a bit more loose and emotional, especially towards her daughter.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She is the queen of Alzano who continuously discusses the affairs between other nations, works to retract the actions her ancestor Alicia III made in her insanity, and even managed to unite the countries to fight against the Researcher of Divine Wisdom together once the identity of their leader was revealed to the entire world.
  • Shipper on Deck: She supports Rumia's love for Glenn with her even giving her the task of taking care of Glenn after making arrangements so that Celica, Sistine, and Re=L are temporarily absent from Fejite. For bonus points, she would also be able to attend their potential wedding due to Glenn Radars being known as the hero of the Alzano empire.

    Zelos Draghart

Zelos Draghart

Voiced By: Atsuo Hasegawa (Japanese), J. Michael Tatum (English)

The Bodyguard of Queen Alicia VII and a veteran of the war between Alzano and Rezalia decades ago.
  • Arc Villain: While Eleanor's actions caused it, he is the main threat Glenn has to face in Volume 2 due to him ordering the soldiers to kill Rumia to save the queen's life.
  • Dual Wielding: He wields two swords in combat.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: This is how he justifies giving the order to kill Rumia since the country can't live without its ruler.
  • Rugged Scar: Has a horizontal one through his nose.

    Azel Le Ignite
The current head of the Ignite Family and the father of Lydia, Aries and Eve.
  • Abusive Parents: He repeatedly told Eve that she was just a spare tool, called useless to her face and that she should give up her emotions and ideals for his sake and even put a curse on her to make her fear him to make her more subserviant. He also attempted to kill Aries just because she didn't have an affinity for fire magic despite her talent at illusion magic and outright killed Lydia to create a clone of her that follows his every order.
  • Ambition Is Evil: He outright calls his goals ambitions which includes taking control over Alzano and is willing to commit several crimes to achieve them such as killing an entire village to power his red key and brainwashing the military. He also considers Alicia VII and other good-hearted characters fools for not using their powers to further their own ambitions.
  • Bad Boss: A man who calls his underlings pieces for him to use and even uses brainwashing to serve them is far from what anyone would call a good boss.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: After unsurping Alzano's control from Alicia VII, he plans on defeating Ferrod Berif to become the world's greatest hero, however not only does the red key he uses come from Ferrod, but his coup failed and was even used by Ferrod to buy himself more time. Not to mention the fact that accepting the key in the first place means that he walks right into Ferrod's plan, unlike Albert and Jatice who destroyed theirs.
  • Black Sheep: He is this to the Ignite Family despite being its current head since according to Lydia and her grandfather, they were originally noble people who saved and helped others instead of the reputation-hogging sleezeback he is.
  • Brought Down to Badass: When facing Glenn who managed to seal his magic with the Fool's World, he is still able to hold his own with his fighting skills and manages to dodge every fatal hit even when hampered by Glenn's poisonous and paralyzing needles.
  • Dirty Coward: According to Eve despite his strength and abilities, he is a paranoid coward who is unwilling to take any risks which is why her plan to stop him worked since she knew he would believe that sending out the queen in the open is a decoy instead of the genuine article. This causes him to send out all his troops available allowing both Eve and Glenn to confront him personally.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He is unable to understand why good-hearted people would do things that would not give themselves more power or glory with one example being Glenn preventing Eve from joining him which Azel interprets as Eve using her looks and body to get Glenn, who is supposed to hate her for Sara's death, on her side instead of him doing it out of his own will.
  • Glory Hound: The only thing he seeks is more glory for the Ignite Family which causes them to throw away there initial noble ideals and develop a ruthless mindset in which others are just pawns for their own glory with his ultimate goal being becoming Alzano's ruler and being seen as a hero of the world.
  • Hated by All: Anyone who actually knows Azel hates him due to his arrogance and lack of empathy towards others. Lydia even stated that he will cause the Ignite Family to fall due to creating too many enemies.
  • Hate Sink: He is an Abusive Parent who psychologically and physically abuses his daughters, especially Eve, sees other people as beneath him and only cares about himself.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: Glenn was able to figure out he was partly responsible for Sara's death due to him mentioning that Eve was responsible for Sara's death which he couldn't know since the report stated that the commands Eve made were rough, but still reasonable and that only the people on the frontline knew about Eve's specific commands.
  • Irony: The believes that the Ignite family is related to the royal family of Alzano and that he has the right to take over if they were to fall. However as Glenn discovered upon traveling to the past, the Ignite family were just mere commoners with no ties to the royal family and for extra points of irony the person that founded the household was inspired by Glenn's heroism to help and save others.
  • It's All About Me: According to Alicia VII, he is a narrow-minded person who only believes in his own mindset and superiority and despite his claims of fighting for his household and the Alzano empire, it is more or less clear that he only cares about his own glory and reputation and sees others as stepping stones and pieces for him to use.
  • Karmic Death: In his transformation into a Demon General, he is incapacitated by Eve's Seventh Garden and hit by Glenn's Penetrator, which he barely survives by becoming human again, but is then stabbed to death by Illia who reveals herself as Aries Ignite, his third daughter who he once tried to kill. So in short Azel's downfall and death came from three people he wronged.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: He interferes with Eve's choices and commands to make them more optimal for raising the family's reputation. This resulted in Jatice continued membership, Sara's death, and Eve's desperation in her missions.
  • Offing the Offspring: He attempted to kill Aries for not being talented at fire magic, but failed due to Lydia's intervention and actually killed Lydia for losing her magic ability and to create a clone of her that follows his every order.
  • The Perfectionist: He only demands perfection from his underlings and throws them out when they fail him. This bites him in the ass since this is what causes Illia to not tell him about Jatice due to fearing his reaction to her failure, but considering her true identity it's even doubtful she would tell him anything he didn't ask.
  • Shipper on Deck: A mocking example since he thinks Eve and Glenn are involved with each other due to the latter preventing Eve from joining him despite Glenn's known dislike for her. He even mockingly asks Glenn how his daughter's body felt. Although ironically upon their final confrontation, he seems to believe that they were truly involved with each other and became outraged over the fact that Eve decided that Glenn is more important to her than the Ignite household.
  • Slut-Shaming: He called Eve's mother a shameless woman who seduced him and accused Eve to be doing the same on Glenn to get him on her side.
  • "Success Through Sex" Accusation: When initiating a coup against the royal family, Azel tries to force Eve to join him against her will. Only for her to be stopped by Glenn, Azel, who knows how poor the relationship between Glenn and Eve is, then accuses Eve of using her body to get Glenn on her side and even mockingly asks Glenn how his daughter felt.
  • Tarot Motifs: The Reversed Magician, someone who has power, but is cruel and misuses it for his own glory.
  • Technician vs. Performer: He is the technician against his daughters' performers since while his plans are based on logic and probability of success and failure, Eve and Lydia plan things based on how the enemy would specifically react against them.
  • We Can Rule Together: He offers people whose talents he recognizes to join him, but they naturally refuse due to how much of a horrible person he is.
  • Written by the Winners: If his coup succeeded, he would fabricate a story that Empress Alicia VII went insane and held the leaders of other countries, hostage, while painting himself as the hero who stopped her.

Special Missions Annex

Among the several factions of the Imperial Court Mage Corps, there is the Special Missions Annex. The members are considered to be the elite among the elite and have the tasks of eliminating certain opponents or organizations. They all receive a code name based on a tarot card and as a result their membership is limited to 22. They are usually led by a member of the Ignite family who holds the tarot card "The Magician".

In general

  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Due to how dangerous their missions are, you can expect them to be calm despite the amount of danger.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: While all members are known to specialize in a certain kind of magic, they are so skilled in their field that they are able to use their abilities creatively or cooperate with each other to cover their weaknesses.
  • Improbable Age: It seems age doesn't matter when you have a good useful skill or ability considering the fact that Glenn was 15 years old when he joined, but he and the other members are working as assassins for the government. The members are also considered to be the Elites of the Elites and are strongest faction of the Imperial Court Mage Corps.
  • Military Mage: The special forces kind since they are tasked with tackling specific threats ordinary mages are unable to handle.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: It was once even lampshaded that the group is made of a few, but very distinct people. Before Jatice's betrayal they were composed of an idealistic third rate magician, a Heroic Bastard who focusses on achieving results, a princess from an exiled tribe from Rezalia, a former priest who has gone off to the path of revenge, a veteran soldier who loves challenges, an unstable man obsessed with "Justice", a young man devoted to the Empress and the succesful subject of Project Revive Life.
  • Tarot Motifs: The members are limited to 22 and they all have a code name tied to their respective tarot card.

Major members

    Lydia Ignite Unmarked Spoilers

Lydia Ignite

Code Name: I The Magician

Status: Deceased

Eve's older sister who was the manager of the Special Missions Annex before losing her magic abilty, but was able to regain them and reinstate her position as manager.
  • The Ace: She is considered one of the greatest geniuses the Ignite house managed to reproduce.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Due to Lydia lacking memories about Eve whom she was shown to be very close to in "Inheritor of the Flame", it is possible that she is either a clone created through Project Revive Life or had her memories tempered by her father. It later turns out to be the former.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Inheritor of the Flame shows that she kept protecting Eve whenever other magicians tried to pick a fight with her and even sacrificed her own power to save her. Part of this comes from her inability to protect her other little sister, Aries, from her father. This even extends in death as shown that she able to subconsciously influence the clone to not hurt Eve.
  • Blind Obedience: Clone Lydia was only created as Azel's pawn who follows his every order, which is why Eve's plan to stop his coup worked due to him outright ignoring the clone's advice.
  • Cool Big Sis: She was this to Eve and Aries when they were younger, but in the present, she weirdly states she doesn't know of the former which hints that she's just a clone.
  • Death or Glory Attack: In order to save herself and her sister, Lydia used Big Final Flame (Finish) to defeat the mages attacking them at the cost of her magic power.
  • Fiery Redhead: She is a very energetic person and has red hair.
  • Ignored Expert: Despite creating the clone for the sake of using her intellect and abilities for his own means, he completely defies her suggestion that the queen coming out is the real deal instead of a decoy. Naturally, she is right, which gives Glenn and Eve the chance to confront them since Azel sends out every soldier under his command to find the "real" queen.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: She was this to Eve when she became a part of the household. Whenever Eve felt upset, Lydia would always cheer her up and when Lydia had to go due to losing her magic power, Eve became the cold person she became today. However Eve's memory and promise to Lydia is what prevented her from Truly breaking.
  • Kill and Replace: The original Lydia was killed by her father once she lost his use for him and was replaced with a clone who was later killed by Eve.
  • Noblesse Oblige: The original is a firm believer of this and the reason why she opposes her father who only sees others as pawns or stepping stones for the Ignite Family's or rather his own glory and reputation.
  • Playing with Fire: Just like the rest of the Ignite Family, Lydia specializes in fire which backfires when an enemy group attacks her while setting up a barrier that prevents fire magic from activating, forcing Lydia to activate a spell at the cost of her own magic ability.
  • Tarot Motifs:
    • The original Lydia represents the Upright Magician due to being a strong leader and supportive of her sister Eve.
    • Clone Lydia represents the Reversed Magician due being unable to make her own choices and only blindly obeying Azel's orders.
  • Tragic Villain: In the end Lydia's clone was just another pawn of Azel who could only obey his order.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is hard to talk about Lydia without mentioning that the Lydia shown in volume 16 & 17 is a clone.

    Sara Silvers

Sara Silvers

Code Name: III The Empress

Status: Inactive (deceased)

Voiced by: Minako Kotobuki (Japanese), Alexis Tipton (English)

Glenn's former co-worker, who died before the story started at the hands of Angel Dust addicts. Her death was the final straw to make Glenn quit his job as an assassin.
  • All-Loving Heroine: While she is fierce to her enemies, she is kind to everyone else including Jatice before his defection as shown when she tries to stop Glenn from fighting since she considers every member a companion.
  • Alliterative Name: Sara Silvers.
  • Animal Motifs: Glenn compared her to a dog, due to the way she kept following him around.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Sara is a complete sweetheart and a member of the strongest group amongst the Imperial Mage Corps. Not to mention the fact that it was reported several other mages were traumatized after working with her.
  • Blow You Away: Just like Sistine she specializes in wind magic.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Her relation with Glenn is the focus of the side story "White Dog" which takes place during his time as an Imperial Mage.
  • Identical Stranger: She looked almost like an adult version of Sistine and it is implied that Glenn is experiencing that sympathy to her, since she reminds him of Sara. He even gives them both almost similar nicknames.
  • Implied Love Interest: It's rather implied if not possibly confirmed that at least Sara had feelings for Glenn, while he considered her precious. Eve thinks Sara is in love with Glenn which also became one of the reasons why they have issues with each other and in "Orientation of Bastard Magic Instructor" Sara outight called Celica, who is Glenn's foster mother, mom.
  • In-Series Nickname: Glenn called her "White Dog".
  • Living Emotional Crutch: She is the one that supported Glenn and his dream becoming a 'Magician of Justice' during his assassin days. And her death is what made Glenn shut-in and apathetic at the beginning.
  • Only Friend: She was this to Eve.
  • Posthumous Character: She died a year before the start of the series, her death driving Glenn to quit his job as an assassin.
  • Tarot Motifs: The Empress, which is shown through her status as the Team Mom of the corps especially to Glenn.

    Christoph Flowell

Christoph Flowell

Code Name: V The Hierophant

Status: Active

Voiced by: Ryota Osaka (Japanese), Aaron Dismuke (English)

One of Glenn's comrades during his as part of the Specials Missions Annex.
  • Barrier Warrior: He specializes in barriers, but is still able to hold his own in combat.
  • A Day Inthe Limelight: "Bastards of the Special Missions Annex" is about how he joined the group.

  • Improbable Age: He is only a year or two older than Glenn's student, but is currently working as an assassin for the Alzano Empire.
  • Innocently Insensitive: In a side story he told Eve that he worries that it might be too late for Eve to get married if she continues the way she is now. Her response was to throttle him.
  • Tarot Motifs: The Hierophant, which is also his code name.

    Bernard Jester

Bernard Jester

Code Name: IX The Hermit (Current), VIII The Strength (Former)

Status: Active

Voiced by: Tsuyoshi Koyama (Japanese)

One of Glenn's comrades during his as part of the Specials Missions Annex.
  • Challenge Seeker: The reason he is a part of the Special Missions Annex is due to the danger of its missions exiting him.
  • Cool Old Guy: An old man whose still a court mage to protect Alzano.
  • Dirty Old Man: When he and the other members where supposed to guard a school under attack. He wanted to take a break and look at the girls at the dance. In a side story he recommended young and cute girls who he will train, when searching for new recruits for the Special Missions Annex.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Played for Laughs, he's rather jealous when Rumia embraces Glenn.
  • Tarot Motifs: The Hermit, which is also his code name. When he was younger his code name was the Strength.

    Jatice Lowfan

Jatice Lowfan

Code Name: XI Justice

Status: Inactive (defected)

Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki (Japanese), Daman Mills (English)

An imperial mage known as #11 Justice who wants to obtain the Akashic Records no matter what.
  • The Aggressive Drug Dealer: He's responsible for spreading Angel Dust addiction, allowing him to control dozens of addicts before they die from the side effects.
  • Always Someone Better: He's got Glenn's number in martial arts and his Tulpas ability is the perfect counter to The Fool's World. Glenn was only able to beat him once in the past due to a combination of luck and planning and only managed to win in episode 12 due to Sistine's help. However ironically Jatice feels this way about Glenn, because he was the only person Jatice is unable to predict and always managed to come out on top despite the low chance of success he had.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Jatice was supposedly killed by Glenn a year before the series, but he's still there to terrorize him and Alzano. No one knows if he managed to fake his death or was somehow ressurected.
  • Arch-Enemy: Can be considered one to Glenn, because of Jatice's obsession of defeating him and his role in Sara's death.
  • Ax-Crazy: Even during his time as an Imperial Court Mage, he was always the least stable since his solution to exacting "justice" is kill everyone. Not to mention the Slasher Smile he has when he tries to kill Glenn and rants about how he'll kill all sorts of strong mages to enact his "justice" and become worthy of the Akashic Records, to the point where he could give Eleanor a run for her money.
  • Back from the Dead: Glenn theorizes Jatice may have been a resurrected as a result of project "Revive Live".
  • Big Bad: While Ferrod is the creator the Researchers of Divine Wisdom, Jatice is truly Glenn's greatest enemy due to their shared past along with Jatice knowing all the secrets of the empire and is a much more capable planner, which allows him to kill Ferrod and supplement him as the Final Boss of the series.
  • Body Double: One of the things he can do with Tulpas is create these in roder to trick his opponent.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: While he doesn't see the future, his own magic "Justia's Scale" allows calculate his opponents move and the probabilities of their actions. However this tends to differ per individual. For example he considers Eve predictable in a fight which allows him to eventually defeat her in a fight and dismember her left arm in a specific spot, because he knew she would go there and swing her arm that way. Glenn on the other hand is pretty much unpredictable, because even in the days when they were allies, Jatice's predictions were that Glenn always had a very low chance of surviving, but despite this he always managed to come out alive which includes their fight a year before the series in which Glenn managed to kill him despite his many disadvantages which includes Sara's death which Jatice believed would make his victory certain.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He's the focus of the SS "THE JUSTICE" which is about a mission he and Glenn took and how Jatice came to view Glenn as an obstacle to his justice.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: He basically gave Ferrod Berif, leader of the Reasearcher of Divine Wisdom, a huge one while laughing at the fact, Jatice a mere human was able to give his plan a great setback. Even being sent to another dimension did nothing to change his tone.
  • Evil Counterpart: Like Glenn, he has a desire to become a mage of justice, but the former got sick of the endless killing while the latter willingly kills far beyond what is considered practical by the imperial court mages.
  • Faking the Dead: He supposedly died a year ago at the hands of Glenn, but is still here in the present day.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He tries to talk to Glenn as if they were friendly co-workers, but he's obviously insane and has a nasty temper.
  • Foil: "THE JUSTICE" shows that during their time in the mage corps they both managed to achieve amazing results during their missions in which they went their own way against orders or procedure in order to execute their own style of "justice" which in Glenn's case was saving more people and in Jatice's case killing everyone who is even remotely related to "evil".
  • Forgot About His Powers: Despite beating Glenn in hand-to-hand combat in episode 11, he is unable to block Glenn's attacks in episode 12. Though he has Tulpas active at the time, which may have taken up his concentration. Not to mention the fact Glenn is more prepared and has Sistine to back him up.
  • For Great Justice: He's obsessed with justice, to the point where it's his codename.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Or in his case Madder. He was originally an Imperial Court Mage, but after discovering the Empire's secret, he became one of their biggest threats.
  • Good with Numbers: According to Jatice, Justia's Scale changes the entire world into numbers from which he calculates the possibilities and actions everyone makes.
  • Hero Killer: He started the first Angel Dust incident, which resulted in Sara getting killed by a brainwashed addict.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: In his Leos guise, he takes offense when Sistine asks if he's a member of the Researchers of Divine Wisdom. He's not a member of that organization, but he proves himself to be similar when he sics an army of Angel Dust addicts on Glenn, all in the name of becoming worthy of the Akashic Records.
  • Karma Houdini: Like Eleanor, he manages to escape despite all his horrific deeds in the anime.
  • Keeping the Enemy Close: One of the reasons he was allowed to stay with the Imperial Court Mages is because he was simply to dangerous to let him go unnoticed.
  • Kill and Replace: After Leos loses the mock army battle, Jatice kills him, takes his form, and curbstomps Glenn.
  • The Kingslayer: He kills the king of Rezalia to kickstart the war against the evil god.
  • Knight Templar: Combined with Tautological Templar and It's All About Me. Even before he turned against the empire, he mostly acted on his own and killed everyone he deemed sinful and now, he's convinced that he's the only one who can destroy all the evils in the world, such as Divine Wisdom and the empire and thus access to the Akashic Records. This dialogue in the manga perfectly sums it up:
Glenn: I didn't like that bastard Leos, but he didn't deserve to die. Is it justice to pump someone like him full of drugs and then kill him?
    Jatice: It certainly was.
Glenn: And is it justice to endanger White Cat when she has nothing to do with the vendetta between us?
Jatice: It certainly was. Don't you think it's the perfect means of rehabilitating you after you'd lost your nerve?
Glenn: You dragged innocent people into this for that?! All just to make me remember what I used to be when I was an Imperial Mage?
Jatice: Of course! All of it was for justice.
  • Light Is Not Good: His Tulpas look angelic and his strongest one is Lady Justice herself, but he's a psychotic mass murderer.
  • No-Sell: Summons Tulpas (which are not magic, and thus are unaffected by Glenn's "The Fool's World") to overwhelm Glenn.
  • Stalker without a Crush: He gathered all kinds of intel on Glenn's loved ones in order to threaten him and Sistine.
  • Tarot Motifs: Reverse Justice, which represents his Black-and-White Insanity and inability to accept responsibility for his actions.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Even during his time as an Imperial Court Mage, he was the most unstable of them, rarely took orders and mostly acted on his own which left many casualties.
  • Trapped in Another World: Ferrod banishes Jatice to another dimension after the latter revealed his identity to the world in Volume 17. Volume 21 reveals that Jatice either tricked Ferrod into sending a tulpas to another dimension or managed to escape himself.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Despite being one of the most dangerous villains to the Alzano Empire, he is on the receiving end of this by several characters:
    • Celica and Eve think they should have no trouble defeating Jatice since in theory their skills and abilities as magicians should be the same, but as Glenn noted Jatice's greatest strength isn't his magic ability, but his cunning and intellect complimented by his original magic, Justia's Scale, which allowed him to counter all Eve's moves with ease and nearly kill her.
    • Ferrod Berif only saw Jatice as a madman who will never reach the truth due to him rejecting the key Ferrod gave him, but in the end Jatice showed that not only is he closer to the truth than Ferrod thought, but he also caused two setbacks to his plan by forcing every country to work together against him which prevents a war between Alzano and Rezalia happening and revealing Ferrod's identity to the entire world. On top of that Jatice eventually kills Ferrod himself.
  • Villain-by-Proxy Fallacy: To him anyone associated with evil even when they worked with them unwillingly or unwittingly.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: After losing to Glenn and Sistine, he flies away on his Tulpas.
  • Villain Respect: He genuinely respects Glenn due to having a sense of justice that equals his own.
  • Walking Spoiler: His existence itself is a spoiler since it reveals a lot more of Glenn's past as an imperial court mage.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He genuinely hates evil especially the Researchers of Divine Wisdom. The problem is that he is more than willing to make sacrifices.
  • Wham Line: As he escapes, he claims the empire itself is evil.
  • Worthy Opponent: He states that Glenn is the type of person who can only win 1 out of 100 battles with him, but that he'll find a way to pull it off. In his Breaking Speech against Eve, he even considered her greatest sin in their fight her insult to Glenn and that she deserves the death penalty for that.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: The reason he hates the Researchers of Divine Wisdom so much is because their leader considered him worthy to become a Demon General which he viewed as the biggest insult to his justice.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: As a result of using his own soul to create a clone to trick Lazar, he only has four to five years to live at most.

    Illia Iruje (Warning Spoilers!!

Illia Iruje

Code Name: XVIII The Moon

Status: Active

An Imperial Court Mage who supposedly worked with Glenn and the others in the past. She's actually a secret member working for Azel le Ignite.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: When she gets defeated by Jatice, she begs him to spare her. Surprisingly he complies due to finding her interesting.
  • Best Served Cold: She infiltrated her father's inner circle for the sole sake of killing him when he is at the height of his life to make him sink in despair. She completes this objective upon seeing Azel pathetically running away and begging for help, she then starts killing him while telling her life story. Now in complete fear, Azel much to his horror realizes Illia's true identity and is painfully stabbed to death while Aries has a sadistic laugh at completing her goal.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her fight with Jatice implies that she does not work under Azel willingly since once Jatice spares her, she yells out that she does not understand him and cries out to her sister. It turns out that she's actually Aries Ignite, the sister of Lydia and Eve, who was nearly killed by her father due to not being talented at fire magic, but was able to survive and escape thanks to Lydia who in turn got killed by her father once she lost her magic ability. This caused Aries to go under the name Illia and go into hiding and eventually work under her father to earn his trust while waiting for the moment to kill him.
  • The Dragon: Of Azel le Ignite. Subverted, since it turns out she only worked under him to exact revenge for her sister, Lydia.
  • Fake Cutie: She looks adorable, but is a cold-blooded killer working under Azel, she even changes her from against Eve which looks colder and more distant, but returns to her first form, but her eyes look rather insane.
  • Fake Memories: Her own magic, "Moon's Cradle", also creates these inside her victims thus furthering the illusion her power holds.
  • Faking the Dead: With Lydia's help, Aries was able to escape her father's assassination attempt and evade him for many years.
  • Good All Along: It turns out she only worked under Azel to betray and kill him for killing her sister Lydia.
  • Logical Weakness: Moon's Cradle has a few flaws such as it does not work against someone who is able to spot the thread in her illusion which is how Glenn was able to figure it out and is useless against Jatice's Justia's Scale since he only looks at the numbers that make up the world which makes her illusions useless towards him.
  • Master of Illusion: As noted above her magic, Moon's Cradle, creates illusions so strong that she may as well be rewriting the world itself to her opponent. For example when Eve, Sistine, and Rumia confront Illia about Azure Sky Cross' ritual with Re=L as the sacrifice, it turns out they were already starting right in front of them which the former three couldn't see due to her illusion.
  • Multilayer Façade: At first she was operative "The Moon" as part of the Special Missions Annex and worked with Glenn and the others for a long time. Then it turns out she is actually a member of Southern Cross with the volume ending by revealing she is actually working for Azel le Ignite. Then volume 17 reveals she truly is Aries Ignite and only worked for Azel to kill him for the horrible treatment he put her and her sisters through.
  • The Not-Love Interest: She saved Glenn from the other three Imperial Court Mages, is respectful to him, supports his dream, used to be co-workers, and has cute looks, all of which attract jealousy from Sistine and Rumia. Sounds like another new love interest for Glenn, right? Actually no since everything is a lie and illusion she created with Moon's Cradle during which she also shows that she didn't think much of him due to being a third-rate magician.
  • Remember the New Guy?: It was stated that she worked with Glenn in the past and supported his dreams despite never being mentioned up till now. To make it more confusing Glenn repeatedly stated that Sara was his only support. This is actually a hint that she created fake memories.
  • Tarot Motifs: The Moon which also serves as her codename. The card itself is associated with illusions that reference her abilities including the ability to create Fake Memories.
  • Underestimating Badassery: The reason she was defeated is that she didn't expect Glenn to figure out her illusions especially since he was a third-rate mage in her eyes.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty: After succeeding in killing her father Azel, Aries was left without a goal and initially only watched the climactic battle in Fejite unfold.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about her without mentioning her abilities and true allegiance. Especially once her true true identity and allegiance is revealed.

  • Crippling Overspecialization: They all possess powerful unique magic, but their strategy is just using that to overpower their opponents unlike the other members who use their powers more creatively. As a result Albert was able to cripple them easily by analyzing their weaknesses.
  • Hate Sink: None of them are likable people due to their arrogance in their ability and trying to kill Glenn for no reason.
  • Killed Offscreen: They were all killed by Illia offscreen after they outlived their usefulness.
  • Not Worth Killing: The reason why Albert didn't kill them after defeating them is because he didn't see them as a threat, instead he ends their careers as magicians.

Fejite

    Redolf Fibel

Redolf Fibel

Voiced By: Miyazaki Atsuyoshi (Japanese)

The parental grandfather of Sistine. He died before the story began and his dream of visiting Melgalius' Sky Castle inspired her to take up his dream and fulfill it herself.
  • Awful Truth: He did not actually died, but went missing due to offering his body to Ferrod.
  • Posthumous Character: He died before the story began as a result of old age.
  • Tragic Dream: He was never able to reach his dream of visiting the Melgalius' Sky Castle despite being an accomplished magician and archaeologist. This desperation made him vulnerable to Ferrod's deal and allowed the great prophet to take over his body.

    Leonard Fibel and Fillyana Fibel

Leonard Fibel and Fillyana Fibel

Voiced By: Kyle Phillips (Leonard/English), Kazumi Togashi (Fillyana/Japanese), Rochelle Grimsmo (Fillyana/English)

The biological parents of Sistine and the adoptive parents of Rumia. As a result of work they can't spend much time with their daughters, but still take good care of them and try to visit as often as possible.
  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: Fillyana looks young enough to be Sistine's sister instead of her mother.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Leonard shows his support to Sistine and Rumia too well.
  • Bad Date: Fillyana reminds Leonard that their date went worse whenever Leonard criticizes how Glenn acts on his date(?) with Sistine. Fillyana mentions that Leonard was three hours late and didn't compliment her clothing while he wore the same clothing he wears usually.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Leonard doesn't want his daughters to get into a relationship which is why he doesn't like Glenn since they both like him.
  • Date Peepers: They do this with what they assume is Sistine's date with Glenn.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The sides story "Father is watching you" focuses on them peeping on Sistine's date(?) with Glenn which also shows how their first date went and how Leonard needs to accept the reality one day that they will grow up.
  • Generation Xerox: Their relationship before as a student and teacher actually mirrors that of Glenn and their silver-haired daughter. Like Mother, Like Daughter.
  • Good Parents: They are both supportive and caring towards their daughters.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Whenever Leonard criticizes Glenn on how he acts on his supposed date with Sistine, his wife keeps reminding him that he did the same or was even worse on their first date with the most glaring one being that a student and teacher shouldn't go out with each other despite the fact he went out with his student when he was an instructor and later on married her.
  • Irony: Despite Leonard's objections to his daughter's love towards Glenn and fearing he might lay his hands on them. His daughters note that it is very hard for them to actually get into a relationship with Glenn himself even outright stating that he is just their teacher.
  • Neck Snap: Played for Laughs variation. Fillyane does this to her husband Leonard to get him to shut up and stop embarrassing Sistine and Rumia.
  • Ring of Power: Leonard owns several of them which are all imbued with magic.
  • Shipper on Deck: Fillyana on the other hand wants to see her daughters in a relationship and is supportive in their pursuit of Glenn.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: When Leonard was an instructor at the Magic Academy, Fillyana was his student and they got into a relationship together which resulted in them marrying and having Sistine.

A religion based in Snoria. They believe in the teachings of the "Silver Dragon" and as a result, they object to the Silver Dragon Festival since they view it as a mockery of their beliefs.
  • Human Sacrifice: They are all killed and their blood is used to awaken the Silver Dragon they worshiped.

  • Mauve Shirt: He is the only named member of the Silver Dragons, but just like the others is turned into a sacrifice by Eleanor.
  • Only Sane Man: While he's part of a group of extremists. He's the only member that actively objects to allying themselves with the Researchers of Divine Wisdom.

Historical Figures

    Alicia III
One of the past queens of Alzano and the founder of Alzano Imperial Magic Academy. A woman shrouded in mystery surrounding her madness.
  • The Chooser of the One: She chooses Glenn to be the one who inherits her notes and thus her will to defeat the demon king.
  • Driven to Suicide: She ends up killing herself once it is clear she went insane.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: She went insane and developed a split personality once she found out the truth behind Alzano and the demon king.

  • She Who Fights Monsters: Her attempts to protect the empire and the world resulted in her insanity, sacrificing the people she was supposed to protect, the prosecution of people with special powers, the Flame of Megiddo and the project Revive Life. Many of these still cause grief in the present and ironically enough also helped further the plans of Ferrod.
  • Split Personality: When she went insane, she developed a sane kindhearted personality before her insanity and a second ruthless personality who was willing to make many sacrifices to defeat the demon king.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Glenn notes she looks rather similar to her descendants Alicia VII and Rumia.

  • Posthumous Character: He was executed in Rezalia four centuries before the series began.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Glenn notes he looks very similar to his descendant Fossil.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Despite being a wanted man in Rezalia for writing "The Magician of Melgalis", he still decided to go there in hopes of studying its ruins, which got him caught and executed.
