Humans

    Nicole Chapman

The heroine of the game. A normal senior student at Acrylic Academy, she is set to graduate. Upon realizing she lost her portfolio, she rushes to the school to get it back.

  • Bungled Suicide: In Ending 3, she decides she cannot take being separated from Joelle, her deceased sister, anymore and tries to stab herself to death. Unfortunately for her, she discovers her immortality is preventing her from doing so.
  • Gamer Chick: The game opens with her playing a session of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
  • Resurrective Immortality: Ending 3 implies that she somehow has the ability to come back after dying, justifying the save feature in-universe, when she is Driven to Suicide via stabbing only to wake up and see spilled blood all over the bathroom and yet still be alright.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: In Ending 3, she breaks down crying because she wants to reunite with Joelle again and stabs herself... only to discover she has become immortal somehow. The game ends with her sobbing at being forever separated from Joelle.
  • Wrongfully Committed: In Ending 2, she tries to confess everything that happened to an officer, but since it involved things like spirits, the officer believes her to be insane and puts her in an asylum.
  • You Have to Believe Me!: In Ending 2, she tries to tell the questioning police officer about the spirits and haunted academy and everything that happened, but is disbelieved and carted off to an asylum.

    Joelle Chapman

Nicole's horror-loving sister. Very playful and mischievous, she decides to tag along and help her sister find her portfolio.

  • Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: After realizing she is Dead All Along and banishing the spirit who brought about her death, she too leaves for the afterlife, but not before giving Nicole a heartfelt goodby and telling her to move on.
  • But Now I Must Go: After helping Nicole banish the Collage to the afterlife, she bids Nicole a tearful goodbye, since now that she knows she is dead, she has to go as well.
  • Dead All Along: One of the big reveals is that she never escaped the supply closet in the second floor with her life. She somehow died offscreen, then became a spirit.
  • Deuteragonist: Nicole is the heroine, but Joelle tags along with her and can be controlled by the player, and the bond between the sisters is just as important as the main story. She is also the subject of a major reveal in the endgame.
  • Friendly Ghost: After dying and becoming a spirit, she is still the same loving and supportive sister to Nicole, helping her navigate the haunted academy and pacify the less-benevolent spirits.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: She is the kind, fun-loving Deuteragonist who helps her sister pacify various Vengeful Ghosts, and has a dog named Dexter whom she dearly loves.
  • Hidden Depths: She is overall an energetic girl who loves horror movies and thinks History is a boring subject, so it might come as a surprise that her favorite subject is Science.
  • Take Care of the Kids: One of her last requests to Nicole before ascending to Heaven is to look after her dog, Dexter.
  • Token Heroic Orc: She is the only spirit who is not violent or vengeful in any way, but is still basically the same person she was in life. She does everything she can to help her sister Nicole escape from the school.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Since spirits forget how they died, it isn’t until the end of the game, where the Collage tells her that she died, for her to realize that she is no longer living, but a spirit.

    Mr. Aaron
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/professor_1.png

Nicole's favorite teacher at the academy, and a well-respected man. He is actually the man who victimized the three girls who became the spirits, under possession from his daughter Brittaney.

  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: The teacher who only showed up briefly in a single scene is the rapist and murderer of the three girls (albeit, he was possessed while doing so).
  • Evil Teacher: Subverted. He seems to be this when he is revealed to be the Serial Killer and Serial Rapist targeting the girls at the academy, but he is actually the victim of Demonic Possession by the Collage.
  • Fighting from the Inside: He tries to resist the Collage's possession whenever he can, but can usually only do stuff like cry before he loses control. When meeting Nicole, he does her best to intimidate her and shove her off before the Collage takes over and strangles her, and gives her the key to the Dormitories so she will go there and hopefully exorcise the Collage from the school.

    The Dean
The head of Acrylic Academy.
  • The Ghost: He remains unseen, but he did play somewhat of a minor role in the backstory in trying to help the girls menaced by a Serial Killer.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He earnestly tried to help the girls who were suffering at the hands of Mr. Aaron- but due to the latter’s good reputation, he never suspected a thing about him until it was too late.

Spirits

    General
The entities haunting Acrylic Academy at night. They were all victims of Mr. Aaron in one way or another, and haunt the school seeking vengeance on the living.
  • Arc Villain: The first three are this for each floor they reside in, as Nicole and Joelle must pacify them before they can go on to the next floor.
  • Cute Ghost Girl: All of them look like cute schoolgirls, as that is what they were in life- except the Collage, who is a cute little girl in an Elegant Gothic Lolita outfit.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Upon learning their names and how exactly they died, the first three are able to let go of their grudge and move on to the afterlife, thanking the Chapman sisters for helping them. Averted with the Collage, who instead has to be forced into the afterlife.
  • Vengeful Ghost: The first three were victims of a Serial Killer and Serial Rapist, and forgot their names when they died- so they lash out at anyone who is unlucky enough to wander in at night. The Collage, meanwhile, is angry at her father for not noticing when she was drowning and angry at the world for not being able to share her art now that she is dead. So she possessed her father and used his body to carry out the rapes and murders.
  • Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl: While only the Shaded looks the part, all of them were ordinary girls in life who died because of Mr. Aaron (though indirectly in the case of the Collage) and lost their memories of their names and how they died, and thus became vengeful towards the world.

    The Shaded

Chelsea Whitney

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_shaded_1.png
"Death is the art of drawing with an eraser."

The spirit haunting Floor 2- the Sketching Wing. In life, she was a shy girl who was sent to Acrylic Academy to get herself and her art out there. She was noticed by Mr. Aaron, who proceeded to stalk and sexually harass her. It eventually got so extreme that she killed herself. She can sketch people and make those sketches come to life, which she uses to kill people by sketching them in deadly situations.

  • Driven to Suicide: She offed herself and wrote a note after what is implied to be a sexual assault by Mr. Aaron, who was already relentlessly stalking her prior.
  • Meaningful Name: She is called the Shaded because her body appears as though it is being covered by a shadow, and it also refers to her Shrinking Violet personality.
  • Shrinking Violet: She is rather reserved when speaking to Nicole and not trying to kill her. In life, she attended the academy because she did not like to share her works of art, and her parents wanted her to get out more.
  • Starter Villain: She is the first spirit who ambushed Nicole and the first one that Nicole and Joelle must calm.

    The Carved

Tessa Joseph

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_carved_1.png

The spirit haunting Floor 3- the Sculpting Wing. She was another victim of Mr. Aaron, who tried to assault her when she was alone. She screamed for help, so he killed her by carving up her body in response.

  • Fiery Redhead: She has flaming-red hair and is the most aggressive of the spirits, constantly chasing you down the halls and speaking in a permanently angry voice.
  • Named After the Injury: Her spirit name references how she died- she was carved apart by a sculpting pen.

    The Exposed

Stephanie Grigg

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_exposed_1.png

The spirit haunting Floor 4- the Photography Wing. She was a junior photographer who was assaulted by Mr. Aaron, who ripped off her clothes and took pictures of her nude body before killing her. She can take deadly photographs of people.

  • Camera Fiend: She uses her camera as her weapon against anyone who wanders onto her floor, as it slowly kills whoever the photo is of.
  • Gutted Like a Fish: It is heavily implied that the Collage, after stripping her naked and taking pictures of her, then disemboweled her with a knife.
  • Meaningful Name: She is called the Exposed because she was subjected to a Shameful Strip and then Gutted Like a Fish, exposing her entrails.
  • Shameful Strip: Was subjected to this by a Collage-possessed Aaron- her dress was ripped off and pictures of her body taken against her will.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Downplayed. As a spirit, she has white hair and is a Vengeful Ghost. But once Nicole and Joelle manage to tell her who she is and how she died, she is pacified and moves on.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: She can steal the souls of her victims with her camera.

    The Collage

Brittaney

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_collage_1.png

The spirit haunting Floor 5- the Painting Wing. She is actually the daughter of Mr. Aaron and the true antagonist of the game. An aspiring artist, she drowned as a little girl when she swam too far into the ocean for her father to notice her. Angry at him for this, she possessed him and used his body to sexually assault and kill three girls, hoping to make him suffer while squiring a captive audience for her art.

  • Antagonistic Offspring: As revenge for not saving her from drowning, she possessed her father, Mr. Aaron, and made him sexually assault and kill multiple girls to make him suffer.
  • Big Bad: She is the one who killed the girls and turned them into the spirits haunting Acrylic Academy and is keeping Nicole and Joelle Chapman trapped inside.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: When first met, she presents herself as the Token Heroic Spirit who thanks Nicole and Joelle for saving the other spirits and tries to help them get the portfolio and leave. Turns out she is the one who killed the girls that would become the spirits in the first place.
  • Bright Is Not Good: The Big Bad responsible for sexually assaulting and murdering three little girls is a Cute Ghost Girl with rainbow-colored hair and frills.
  • Cute Is Evil: A Cute Ghost Girl in an Elegant Gothic Lolita outfit and colorful hair... who also happens to be a malevolent Vengeful Ghost, Serial Killer, and Serial Rapist.
  • Demonic Possession: It’s implied that whenever Mr. Aaron was sexually assaulting and killing people, it was actually her taking control of his body, as in the death scene where he strangles Nicole, his eyes are said to change as if they were no longer his own.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Even when revealing her true nature as the sadistic rapist and killer of multiple girls, she speaks with the same polite language she did when pretending to be a benevolent spirit.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: In her Kirk Summation, Nicole says that her tragic death by drowning as a child was horrible, but that taking it out on her father and innocent people to make them feel the same pain makes her “UNFORGIVABLE”.
When you were a small girl, there was an accident! You were at the beach near the ocean, do you remember? [...] You swam out deep into the waters... too far for your father to see you! With him not watching you and the water getting rougher and rougher... you drowned... alone and cold... YOU DIED IN THE OCEAN THAT DAY! [...] And in your grief and anger, you were left behind, trapped in this world... And so you did the only thing that could bring you any kind of relief... You haunted that man, your father, who so carelessly let you swim on your own, who let you die that day! You haunted him and made him do dark and evil things, so he could feel the same pain and anguish you felt! You're... you're UNFORGIVABLE!
  • Giggling Villain: She lets out a giggle every now and then.
  • Mad Artist: Her motive for killing innocent people is that she wants to show off her art to them, which she cannot show to living people, and she also seems to consider her sexual assaults and murders to be artistic masterpieces.
  • Sadist: She actively takes pleasure in the suffering of the living and the dead alike, sadistically sexually assaulting three girls and giving them painful, drawn-out deaths, while inhabiting the body of her father and ignoring his crying and look of horror.
  • Serial Rapist: Or Serial Sexual Assaulter. She, possessing Aaron, is implied to have raped Chelsea, then did an Attempted Rape on Tessa and stripped Stephanie naked while taking pictures of her body against her will.
  • Token Evil Teammate: She is the only one of the spirits who actively enjoys being a Vengeful Ghost and intentionally avoids learning her true name and cause of death, as that would force her to move on to the afterlife. She is also the one who killed the other girls and turned them into spirits in the first place.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When Nicole starts telling her how she died and her true name, which would force her into the afterlife, she goes from polite and Faux Affably Evil to screaming in big, blood-red text.
The Collage: THIS HAS GONE ON LONG ENOUGH...
    Joelle Chapman: Hurry, Nicole!
Nicole Chapman: R-right! You listen to me, Collage! Or should I say... Brittaney...
Collage: YOU... STOP THIS AT ONCE!!!
Nicole: When you were a small girl, there was an accident! You were at the beach near the ocean, do you remember?
    Collage: I SAID STOP!
    Joelle: KEEP GOING, SIS!
Nicole: You swam out deep into the waters... too far for your father to see you! With him not watching you and the water getting rougher and rougher... you drowned... alone and cold... YOU DIED IN THE OCEAN THAT DAY!
Collage: NICOLE! PUT AN END TO THIS! I WILL NOT LEAVE THIS WORLD!
Nicole: And in your grief and anger, you were left behind, trapped in this world... And so you did the only thing that could bring you any kind of relief... You haunted that man, your father, who so carelessly let you swim on your own, who let you die that day! You haunted him and made him do dark and evil things, so he could feel the same pain and anguish you felt! You’re... you’re UNFORGIVABLE!
Collage: NO MORE, NO MORE! ...NO MORE... NO MORE...
    Joelle: I... I think it’s working, Nicole!
