Sgt. Abraham Ford

Debut: Issue 53

Abraham is a former soldier for the U.S Army leading a group of survivors from Houston on a mission to Washington D.C where there's allegedly a government project working on reversing the zombie outbreak. After encountering Rick and his group, he convinces them to come along. He is killed by Dwight, a member of The Saviors.

  • Amazon Chaser: Why he fell for Holly and cheated on Rosita.
  • Anti-Hero: Type III, leaning into Type IV at some points.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He's one of the people who show up to help Rick and Michonne clear out the inside of Alexandria.
  • The Big Guy: He was initially the leader of his own group, but steps down and becomes this for Rick's group. He is physically the largest and most imposing member of the group.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: While his death was sudden and unceremonious, the fact that he managed to continue casually talking for a few moments before the arrow in his head killed him was pretty awesome.
  • Eye Scream: How he dies.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He gets riled up easily.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: His greatest fear is this, with Rosita acting as his Morality Pet.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Rosita.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: A believer in this, after what happened to his family, and the things he himself has done. Rick convinces him of a more moderate position.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: While leading his group, he executed three members of his group who tried to steal food and leave, believing that his mission to get Eugene to Washington D.C. was too important for anyone to jeopardize. When Eugene was revealed to be a liar, Abraham realized that he had killed them for no reason at all.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: One that he does his best to hide.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: Is suddenly killed while talking to Eugene.
  • The Leader: Of his group, and he clashes with Rick over who the leader is once their groups merge. He eventually comes to respect Rick and lets him lead, settling in as The Big Guy. After the group settles in Alexandria, he becomes the leader of the settlements construction crew.
  • More Brakka: His weapon is an assault rifle.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: More like "my god what did I almost do" when Maggie turned out to be alive, after he almost shot her in the head to keep her from reanimating.
  • Pragmatic Hero: He will do whatever it takes to keep his group going.
  • Rape as Backstory: During the initial outbreak, his neighbors raped his wife and daughter, leading to Abraham brutally killing all of them.
  • Sacrificial Lion: His death along with Glenn's kickstarts the conflict with the Saviors.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: One of the most profane characters.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: So sudden that Abraham himself doesn't even notice after the arrow is shot into his head. It's all the more surprising because he had been established as one of the most major and long-lasting characters by that point.
  • 'Tis Only a Bullet in the Brain: Never actually notices the arrow lodged in his head; he just continues talking until it kills him.
  • The Worf Effect: Seemed to get killed just to show off that Negan was a real threat after all.

Debut: Issue 53

Eugene is a scientist who worked for the government and claims to know what caused the Zombie Apocalypse, convincing both Abraham and Rick's groups to protect him on the way to Washington D.C. Actually a high school science teacher who lied to them to get protection. He has knowledge about a large number of subjects, including first aid and making bullets.

  • Action Survivor: He's extremely adept at finding ways to survive and manages to hold his own pretty well the few times he gets into a fight.
  • Awesome by Analysis: His studying of the walkers allows him to develop strategies to combat them. After the first Time Skip, he's the one who's figured out how to direct the Walker herds using mounted riders with horns.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He's one of the people who show up to help Rick and Michonne clear out the inside of Alexandria.
  • Consummate Liar: He notes lying as one of the two things he has going for him next to his extreme intelligence, and uses it to con protection out of the other survivors.
  • Distressed Dude: He gets captured by the Saviors while scouting and brought before the gates of the Safe-Zone, where Dwight demands that they let him and the other Saviors in or they kill Eugene. Eugene responds by bitting him in the dick, giving the others a chance to open fire on the Saviors while they are distracted and free Eugene.
    • Happens again in All-Out War when he's taken hostage by the Saviors, though this time Dwight breaks him out.
  • '80s Hair: His mullet, which he likes because it makes people underestimate him. Post Time Skip, he no longer has his mullet.
  • Fat Idiot: Inverted. He's by far the most intelligent survivor who appears in the entire story, at least when it comes to book smarts.
  • Formerly Fat: He's lost a lot of weight since the Safe-Zone was attacked by a horde, attempting to get in shape so he could contribute more and impress Rosita. He's lost even more weight after the Time Skip.
  • Hopeless Suitor: To Rosita. Whether this is because of his past lies to her or simply because he's decidely unattractive (or both) is unknown. That said, he's significantly less hopeless after the Time Skip, though their relationship has its troubles, including her cheating on him.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: While he's very remorseful over it, this is his justification for lying about being a government scientist and the project in Washington, just so he could be protected by stronger survivors. Knowing that he wasn't strong or brave enough to survive any other way, using his intelligence to manipulate others was his only option.
  • Man Bites Man: Nastiest example yet; he bites Dwight in the dick, hard enough to immediately draw blood through his jeans.
  • The Medic: Served as this on the way to Washington D.C., using a variety of techniques to treat the groups injuries.
  • Non-Action Guy: Most of the time, but he does manage to kill a few zombies in the No Way Out finale and escape from The Saviors by biting Dwight's dick.
  • The Peeping Tom: Used to spy on Abraham and Rosita when they had sex. Subverted in that they knew and found it amusing. He later expresses guilt and shame to Abraham about it, saying that he was just lonely and going crazy while they were on the road. In a much, much later scene he starts to do this again with Magna and Yumiko but a zombie attack cuts it short.
  • Perma-Stubble: He has one. Evolves into a beard after the Time Skip
  • The Smart Guy: Very smart. He has knowledge on dozens of topics, and even managed to figure out a way to manufacture bullets. As of Volume 22, he's become so vital to the group's survival that Rick actually forbids him from going on more supply runs as he's too valuable to lose. He later becomes one of the driving figures in rebuilding post-apocalyptic society, including getting a working radio network up and running, and overseeing construction of a fully-functional railway in the final issue.
  • Sole Survivor: As of Rosita's death in Issue 144, he is currently the only surviving member of Abraham's group.
  • Took a Level in Badass: During the No Way Out arc, he takes down several walkers. After this he starts exercising more to get in better shape and becomes dedicated to finding ways to increase the safety of the Safe-Zone. Culminates with his first human kill in All Out War, when he shoves a Savior off a building.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He tells Rick that they should use the 16-year-old Lydia as bait to draw Alpha out of hiding so they can kill her. When Rick points out how dangerous that could be it leads to this exchange:
    Rick: "We wouldn't."
    Eugene: "What?"
Rick: "We wouldn't hurt her. What if Alpha calls that bluff?"
    Eugene: "Then we don't bluff."

     Rosita

Rosita Espinosa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rosita_espinosa_twdc_1997.png
Debut: Issue 53

Rosita is Abraham's girlfriend. Before meeting him, she often had sex with other survivors in order to get protection, and was surprised when Abraham refused her initial advances but protected her anyway. She breaks up with him after figuring out he is cheating on her with Holly.

  • Action Survivor: She manages to take down several zombies when the Alexandria Safe-Zone is attacked.
    • Took a Level in Badass: During "All Out War", participating in numerous battles against the Saviors. Post Time Skip, she seems to be one of the leaders of Alexandria's fighters, helping to command the group that herds a herd of walkers away from the Kingdom.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She's one of the people who show up to help Rick and Michonne clear out the inside of Alexandria.
  • Flat Character: Doesn't have much of a personality.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Though she lets her hair down after the Time Skip.
  • Too Happy to Live: After the time skip, she's in a happy relationship with Eugene and becomes pregnant. So naturally, Alpha beheads her before all of this can go anywhere.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Abraham.
  • Hypocrite: She breaks up with Abraham after she finds out he's been cheating on her with Holly. She later cheats on Eugene with another man during the Time Skip... which ended up getting her pregnant.
  • Mauve Shirt: Though amazingly she manages to survive for quite some time before meeting a tragic and unceremonious end in Issue 144.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's very attractive.
  • Never Bareheaded: Hardly ever seen without her hat on.
  • Off with His Head!: One of Alpha's many decapitation victims. Made sadder due to the fact that she was pregnant at the time.
  • Out of Focus: After breaking up with Abraham, she is seen less often and doesn't do much when she does show up.
    • Post Time Skip, she starts to get more pagetime.
  • Spicy Latina: Downplayed, if not averted.
