King Robert's Bastards

Robert Baratheon is known to have fathered—according to Maggy the Frog's prophecy—a total of sixteen bastards, though only one has been acknowledged. Varys admits to knowing of eight. Five have been seen by point of view characters, while two others have been mentioned only in passing. Because of how Eddard words Robert's will, Cersei begins a campaign to kill all of Robert's bastards, but Tyrion stops it after an ugly scene with Barra's mother fighting to protect the baby.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: All of the grown bastards shown in the story are said to have an inclination towards fighting and have the physical build to show it. Edric Storm in particular is as boisterous as his father is.
  • Famous Ancestor: Not only are they descended from Robert, but they also share with their father's Targaryen ancestry, which makes all of them direct descendants of Aegon the Conqueror and Queen Rhaenys, and Durrandon ancestry.
  • Heroic Bastard: All of Robert's bastards seen so far are somewhere on the heroic-ish side of things, being pleasant people who often show concern for others. When they aren't Cheery Neutral.
  • The Purge: There's the rumor of Cersei ordering the death of a pair of twins Robert fathered on a servant at Casterly Rock. And there's the massacre of Robert's bastards in King's Landing in the wake of Robert's death.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Much unlike Robert's "trueborn" sons, all the bastards are shown to have striking Baratheon features - including black hair and blue eyes - and psychological traits, like being very friendly and easygoing.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: The grown bastards are shown to have the good looks of the Baratheons.

    Mya Stone

Mya Stone

"I never fall."

The eldest of Robert's bastards, conceived whilst he was being fostered in the Vale. Though Robert never acknowledged Mya, her parentage is something of an open secret. She serves as a guide on the rocky climb from the Vale to the Eyrie, leading trains of mules. She interacts with Alayne Stone (who in truth is a disguised Sansa Stark) during her stay there.

  • The Beastmaster: She's extremely skilled with mules and has trained them to repeatedly climb up and down the dangerous path from the Vale to the Eyrie. Lothor Brune even describes her as being "half-mule herself."
  • Boyish Short Hair: Her Baratheon black hair is cropped short and she dresses in a masculine manner.
  • Brainy Brunette: Though naive when it comes to the ways of love, she is an expert in her job.
  • Cool Big Sis: She becomes one of the female confidants to the 6-7 years younger Alayne.
  • Disappeared Dad: Robert initially had the firm intention of bringing Mya back to King's Landing and taking care of her, at least: but Cersei strongly implied that she would have the child killed if he did so. Because of this, Mya was left back in The Vale, and Robert would not attempt to bring any more of his bastards up. He, in fact, went out of his way not to know much about them if avoidable from that point onward as a distancing tactic. This is partially out of a wish to avoid heartbreak, true, but it's not simply an excuse if you're justified in trying to keep them alive, too.
  • Heroic Bastard: There really isn't much meanness to this lass, whatever her background. In fact, she's very grounded, if a touch naive. The fact that she has taken a job guiding people safely up and down one of the most treacherous mountainsides in the Seven Kingdoms tells you a lot about her grit and care for others.
  • Innocence Lost: The innocence she displayed in A Game of Thrones is gone by the fourth, by which her love Mychel was forced to marry a highborn lady. The incident left her heartbroken.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: As Robert's child she inherits his blue eyes. Catelyn even mentions in A Game of Thrones how her innocent and happy dreams of love and marriage remind her of Sansa.
  • Invisible Parents: Her mother is mentioned a few times but never seen. The mother isn't even given a name, and it isn't stated whether or not she's alive during the story's events.
  • Nice Girl: A little brisk at times, but you certainly don't get Jerkass vibes from her at all. She's doing it to keep you on the straight and narrow. Literally.
  • Outdoorsy Gal: Loves climbing mountains, and made it her job to do it all the time.
  • Parental Abandonment: Mya has memories of spending time with Robert when she was young, but he then disappeared from her life, and, from her point of view, never showed any interest in her ever again (though unknown to her, he was strong-armed into doing so). This doesn't seem to bother her too much, at first. Later when Alayne and Myranda are descending from the Eyrie she describes her childhood memories of her father playing with her with great bitterness. It's eventually revealed that Robert wanted to bring her to court, but Cersei obliquely threatened to kill her if he did. There are small hints, however, that her mother might have received some payment or tokens via Varys, and that strings may have been pulled to give her a few advantages in life, such as the chance to learn her trade as a mountain guide. Even if she doesn't know about that.
  • Plucky Girl: So very much. Best emphasized by this quote:
Mya: A stone is a mountain's daughter. I trust my father, and I trust my mules. I won't fall.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Invoked. Alayne deems that Mya would look gorgeous in a dress.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: In her late teens she was deeply in love with Mychel Redfort.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: She and Mychel Redfort had feelings for each other, despite his being a highborn knight and she a base-born commoner (especially since Robert never officially recognized her). When Catelyn meets her in AGOT, Mya is practically giggling with happiness. Lord Horton, of course, had no intention of allowing his son to marry a commoner, much less a bastard, and so he forced Mychel to marry Ysilla Royce, daughter of Bronze Yohn. When Alayne later meets Mya on her way to the Vale, the older girl is much quieter and sadder, as befits a broken heart. Also, in Alayne's TWOW chapter, is heavily implied that she and Mychel sometimes sneak away to see each other.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She has the requisite black hair and blue eyes of the Baratheon line. If Lothor Brune's comment is any indication, she got a decent enough wedge of the family stubbornness to tide her over. She's also strong, athletic and prefers to be physically active, which are other inherited traits.
  • Tomboy: She prefers stereotypically masculine clothing and keeps her hair short.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She prefers stereotypical masculine clothing and keeps her hair short compared to Alayne who wears dresses.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Alayne is convinced that she would be even prettier if she dressed in gowns instead of breeches.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Alayne remarks on how striking her eyes are.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: She dresses in men's clothes but is a good-natured young woman.

    Edric Storm

Edric Storm

"My father taught me to fight."

One of the bastard sons of King Robert, Edric grew up at Storm's End. Robert acknowledged him, mostly because his mother is Delena of House Florent (who is daughter of Colin Florent, Selyse Baratheon's uncle), and bastards that are of noble blood on both sides are a bit more acceptable. Edric was taken in by Stannis in Clash of Kings after he takes over Storm's End, and he has since then become friends with Shireen Baratheon, daughter of his uncle Stannis and his aunt Selyse.

  • The Charmer: The kid is said to charm whoever he encounters at such a young age, too. According to Stannis, he got it from his dad.
  • Hidden Backup Prince: When it comes down to it, Edric, as a formally acknowledged bastard of two Great Houses, being raised properly by his father's family can be seen as semi-official insurance for both. Should either lineage, say, run out of heirs, need some marriage ties or suddenly need to shore any existing claims up with a little in-house double-back marriage (not looking at you, Shireen)... There he is. Handy to be made legit. And to possibly cause problems (also looking at you, Shireen — Westerosi nobles tend to balk at ruling ladies/queens if they can plonk a semi-justified man there, instead).
  • Like Father, Like Son: Edric is described as having a personality resembling a mix of both Robert and Renly, but most people naturally emphasize his resemblance to his father.
  • Meaningful Name: In-Universe and Lampshaded by Stannis:
Stannis: Was there ever a name so apt? It proclaims his bastardy, his high birth, and the turmoil he brings with him.
  • Nephewism: He was raised mostly in Storm's End by Renly, and after Renly's death, he lives with Stannis until Davos has to send him away for his own safety.
  • Noble Fugitive: Davos sends him to Lys to spare him from being sacrificed by Melisandre.
  • Nominal Importance: Davos is unnerved when Stannis doesn't address his name and calls him "Edric Storm" as often as possible when speaking of him.
  • Only Friend: He's Shireen Baratheon's only friend (if you leave out Patchface.)
  • Parental Abandonment: Subverted. Robert wasn't really involved in the lives of his bastards post-Mya (he doesn't even know about the existence of most of them), but not Edric. Instead, he practically dumps the boy on his brothers so they can deal with the lad for him. Because... completely ignoring the raised voices of the Florents is not as easy as dodging various smallfolk dotted across the map is, but keeping the poor mite away from Cersei is still an actual priority.
  • Put on a Bus: Davos and the King's Men have him whisked away from Dragonstone and taken to Lys in Essos with several knights for protection in order to prevent Melisandre from sacrificing him. It's safe to say that his story has yet to be ended.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Not only does he bear the classic Baratheon looks with black hair, blue eyes, and athletic build, he has the prominent ears inherited from his Florent mother. Ouch.
    • Considering who their parents are, he should actually look very similar to Shireen (minus the greyscale scars)... Of course, he has the slight "advantage" of being born male to try making the typical Florent ears and Baratheon strong jaw they share work for him, rather than against. Their resemblance is even closer than most cousins, since their fathers were both Baratheons and their mothers both Florents, and it's mentioned that they could easily be mistaken for full siblings.
  • Targeted Human Sacrifice: Melisandre wants to use him as a sacrifice because of his royal blood. Davos puts the kibosh on that plan by having him whisked off to Lys.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: He worships Robert to the point of trying hard to resemble him in everything he does.

    Bella

Bella

"I'm named Bella. For the battle. I bet I could ring your bell, too. You want to?"

Bella is a prostitute at a brothel called the Peach in Stoney Sept. She claims that Robert is her father, who fathered her during the time he took refuge in Stoney Sept after being defeated at the Battle of Ashford, and seems to have inherited the king's legendary sex drive.

  • Brother–Sister Incest: Averted with Gendry, who she propositioned when he came to the Peach. Fortunately for everyone, Gendry wasn't in the mood that day.
  • Hero of Another Story: Bella and Gendry met without any knowledge that they are half-siblings. They both brushed off their encounter.
  • Meaningful Name: Claims she was named for the Battle of the Bells, during which she was conceived. "Bella" could also be the feminine form of "battle" in Latin. It also means "beautiful", as befitting her profession.
  • Only One Name: Unlike her half siblings Mya and Edric, she has not been formally acknowledged as one of Robert's bastards. If she were, she'd be Bella Rivers.
  • Son of a Whore: Bella's mother was a prostitute at the Peach when Robert hid before the Battle of the Bells.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Bella has the black hair of the Baratheons. Arya notes that her hair is like Robert's and Gendry's. She also seems to have inherited Robert's easy, down-to-earth charm and lustful disposition.
  • Surprise Incest: Averted, but it was a close thing. Bella claims to be the bastard daughter of Robert Baratheon, and flirts with Gendry, who's definitely the bastard son of Robert but doesn't know it. It's a good thing that Gendry was in a sulky mood when she hit on him.
  • Unproblematic Prostitution: Bella gives off the impression of being completely happy in her line of work and seems disappointed when Gendry doesn't respond to her advances before moving on to another customer who she giggles with.

    Barra

Barra

Barra is the bastard daughter of King Robert and a prostitute from Chataya's brothel in King's Landing. The child is an infant with thin, dark hair. She is said to resemble Mya Stone as a child. She is killed by the goldcloak Allar Deem under Janos Slynt's orders during the purge of Robert's bastards ordered by Cersei.

  • Babies Make Everything Better: Subverted. The City Watch has very little qualms with killing her in spite of being a baby.
  • Death of a Child: Murdered by the goldcloaks during Cersei's purge of all Baratheon bastards from King's Landing.
  • Kick the Dog: She and her mother are completely defenseless against the City Guard and pose no inherent threat to anyone. They are still killed in Chataya's brothel.
  • Meaningful Name: She is a Baratheon bastard.
  • Only One Name: She has not been formally acknowledged as one of Robert's bastards. If she were, she'd be Barra Waters.
  • Son of a Whore: Her mother is a prostitute who lives in a King's Landing brothel.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Ned Stark believes that she looks like her half-sister Mya Stone as a baby.
