"I know you too well, Theon. I saw you take your first step, helped bend your first bow."

A legendary raider, Dagmer is like an uncle to Theon and helped train him as a child.

  • Affably Evil: He may be one of the most feared raiders of the Ironborn, but Dagmer is a pretty easygoing individual who is among the few Ironborn to treat Theon decently upon his return and is genuinely happy to see him again.
  • Bling of War: Dagmer wears many rings of gold, silver and bronze, set with garnet, sapphire and dragonglass, all of which he won paying the iron price.
  • The Captain: Of the Foamdrinker.
  • Colonel Badass: Despite not being highborn (although Theon mentions that one of Dagmer's ancestors was a Greyjoy bastard), he is given command of a large force of Ironborn raiders and holds Torrhen's Square.
  • The Dreaded: He is extremely feared and well-known in the North due to his raids in the past.
  • Facial Horror: An ax to the face as a child left him horribly disfigured, and he is described as having four lips instead of two.
  • Honorary Uncle: Theon calls him uncle and considers him more of a father figure than Balon and Eddard combined, since he actually treats Theon decently and had taught him how to fight when he was a child.
  • Lip Losses: Sports a hideous scar across his mouth, courtesy of being smashed in the face with an axe; as such, he's described as having "four lips instead of two."
  • The Mentor: To Theon, having trained him how to fight as a child, and gives him helpful advice upon his return to the Iron Islands.
  • Named After the Injury: He got his nickname after taking an axe to his face as a child, leaving a deep scar splitting the lower half of his face apart.
  • Old Soldier: His hair is described as snow white, indicating his age. Its mentioned he raided with Balon when the latter was still young.
  • Pride: Theon notes how proud Dagmer is of his status as the most feared Ironborn warrior of his generation, and exploits that pride to convince Dagmer to help him with his plan to take Winterfell.
  • Scary Teeth: He has rotted teeth, which combined with his messed up mouth makes him even more disturbing looking.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Greyjoys. He takes pride in having been Balon's best soldier for many years.

Gynir "Rednose"

A raider that participates in the raiding of the Stony Shore and Theon's capture of Winterfell.

  • In-Series Nickname: Gynir Rednose, or simply Rednose.
  • Properly Paranoid: After the deaths of Aggar and Gelmarr he takes to sleeping in armor and adopts the noisiest dog in Winterfell to guard his sleep.

Asha's Warriors

    The Black Wind

The Black Wind is the longship captained by Asha Greyjoy. The crew is fiercely loyal to Captain Asha, as she says: "My crew would wait on deck for a year if I asked it of them." Notable crew members include Eerl Harlaw, Asha's relative on her mothers side. Qarl the Maid, Asha's lover. And Lorren Longaxe a notorious raider in the Iron Isles

  • Badass Crew: Everybody on the Black Wind is a skilled warrior and experienced pirate.
  • Badass in Distress: A handful of survivors from the Black Wind, plus Tristifar Botley, are taken captive by Stannis' men and imprisoned by Lady Sybelle Glover in Deepwood Motte's dungeons. She later ransoms them to Tycho Nestoris, who needs protection while travelling to meet Stannis. They rejoin Asha after reaching Stannis' army.
  • Blood Knight: Cromm, who is said to have never met a woman he loved as much as battle.
  • Character Death: Several members of the crew have been slain:
    • Hagen the Horn is the first to die when an arrow catches him as he runs down the steps of Deepwood Motte's watchtower, sending him plummeting to the ground.
    • Cromm is badly wounded when Asha's forces are defeated while fleeing Deepwood Motte, and he dies in captivity.
  • Death Seeker: Asha realizes in A Dance With Dragons that most of her crew has given up on victory, and instead are simply hoping for a good death in battle.
  • Red Shirt Army: Many of them are killed when Stannis Baratheon and his Northern mountain clan allies retake Deepwood Motte.
  • True Companions: Asha and her crew are very loyal to each other and are good friends.

  • Famed In-Story: Qarl the Maid is known as being one of the most renowned of the Ironborn reavers; Dagmer Cleftjaw names him as one of the top three most fell reavers when talking to Theon, just behind Andrik the Unsmiling and mentioned as about equal with Black Lorren.
  • Ironic Nickname: Is a man and has lots of sex with Asha. He is called "the Maid" to distinguish him from all the other Qarls on the Iron Islands and his total inability to grow a beard.
  • Love Triangle: Tristifer Botley is hopelessly in love with Asha. Qarl doesn't even seem to acknowledge him as a rival though.
  • My Nayme Is: Qarl, not Carl.
  • Number Two: To Asha.

  • Permashave: He is unable to grow any facial hair beyond a soft fuzz that takes a fortnight to come in.
  • Pretty Boy: He's clean-shaven and considered attractive, with a well-toned physique.

  • Unequal Pairing: He is the grandson of a thrall, while Asha is the princess of the Iron Islands. This prevents them from marrying— much to Asha's disappointment.

  • Action Girl:
Hagen's daughter stumbled to her knees, snatched up his sword, stabbed the second man, and then rose again, smeared with blood and mud, her long red hair unbound, and plunged into the fight.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: She wants Tris, who's only in love with Asha, and tries propositioning him for sex before the battle at Deepwood Motte. She doesn't seem too bothered when he refuses, though, and goes off with Six-Toed Harl instead.
  • All Women Are Lustful: Goes after Tris Botley then Six Toed Harl.
  • Ambiguous Situation: She never speaks a single word in any of her appearances, so it is not known if she is mute or just The Quiet One.

A famed raider and member of Victarion Greyjoy's crew on the Iron Victory.

  • Improbable Aiming Skills: If there's any truth to the story behind his nickname; see below.

  • Number Two: To Victarion, until Euron gives him lordship over Oakenshield.
  • Villainous Friendship: With Victarion, although he won't refuse a lordship for him. Victarion understands, and drinks with him in celebration afterwards to show there are no hard feelings about it since he blames Euron for the situation, not Nute.

    Wulfe One-Ear

Wulfe One-Ear

A raider on Victarion's crew.

  • Number Two: Replaces Nute the Barber as Victarion's second-in-command, but Victarion laments that he is nowhere near as smart or skilled as Nute.
  • Replacement Goldfish: After Nute the Barber is made Lord by Euron, Wulfe replaces him as Victarion's second in command. Though he's also a Poor Man's Substitute because he's inferior in both skill and intelligence to Nute.
  • Screaming Warrior: During the battle off of the Shield Islands, Wulfe jumps aboard an enemy ship while screaming.
  • Spiteful Spit: When Moqorro is brought aboard the Iron Victory, Wulfe spits at him upon learning he is a Red Priest.

  • Would Hit a Girl: He threatens Asha with this when she gets a bit too mouthy towards Euron and his cronies.

Asha Greyjoy: [pulls out her axe] Try it and hereafter men will call you "the Red Eunuch".

    Torwold

Torwold Browntooth

One of Euron's captains.

  • British Teeth: Implied by his nickname.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Euron.
  • We Need a Distraction: Euron has Torwold and the Red Oarsman sail a dozen longships up the River Mander to lure away the defenders of the Shield Isles. Once the defenders take the bait and give pursuit, Euron's main force falls upon the Shield Isles.
