Awesome / The Genesis Fleet

  • Probably the Moment of Awesome of the whole series. Robert Geary commands an old ship with an unstable reactor that requires constant maintenance just to not explode and kill everyone aboard, inferior weaponry and a crew that, aside from one Ensign, has less than a few weeks of experience against a bigger, faster ship with more weapons on it, accompanied by a freighter carrying reinforcements that he absolutely must stop short of his planet. He damages the freighter so it turns around and runs, takes hits from the enemy destroyer, and realizes that as soon as he loses, either the freighter will return and brings the reinforcing troops down on the planet, or the destroyer might just bomb the colony from the orbit. Oh, and their escape pod is damaged and the core is slowly overloading. So, what does he do? He launches an escape pod at the enemy, simultaneously fires all remaining weapons on his ship, and when the Engineering tells him their ship is gonna blow up, he launches the boarding party to capture the ship, that, by all accounts, even after heavy combat, probably holds twice as many people as he has, leads the charge, gets wounded, gets a concussion, has half of his crew and the second officer killed, but he still. Freaking. Takes. The. Ship!
Then he sits in the chair on the bridge, sends the message to the planet to explain what he did, while slowly losing his consciousness, and finishes his report with a soon-to-become iconic phrase:"This crew brought honor to the ancestors by their actions."
