Main Series

  • Chapter 1: Chise is able to resist the temptation to leave everything behind and go live in the world of faerie, by holding her arm so tight that the nails draw blood. She refuses to abandon the only person since her parents to ever treat her as family.
  • Chapter 2: A glimpse of Chise's sheer magical potential is shown when she transforms a single small crystal into a small garden of crystal poppies.
  • Chapter 3: Nevin's last dream, which he has with Chise, shows the old dragon taking to the skies one last time. He also takes the opportunity to encourage Chise to keep on living. Upon his death, a beautiful lindenbaum tree sprouts form his body.
  • Chapter 6: Despite having a knife to her throat, Chise wriggles her way out of a hostage situation. She didn't even do it to save herself, but in order to hit Renfred's arm to force him to release the Ariel, which was suffering from being in Renfred's grasp. She doesn't realize it cut into the side of her neck until things settled down.
  • Chapter 7: Chise, working with Ariel, manages to purify the impurity instead of destroying it. She does it by turning the impurity into dandelions, flowing in the wind. Thanks to her efforts, the corrupted souls enter the afterlife, and Mina and Matthew find each other again.
  • Chapter 8: Titania's arrival is marked by the environment reacting to her presence, the birds fluttering in the wind, and Spriggan's beautiful singing. The Faerie Queene certainly knows how to make an entrance.
  • Chapter 9: Ruth stops the shadowy, white-faced monster attacking Chise in its tracks with a single hand, and proceeds to take it out by crushing its face.
  • Chapter 10: Chise uses a sleeping potion she made (by accident) to knock out Alice who was trying to take the church grim from her. Then she ties Alice up and starts interrogating her, without letting her know that Elias was lurking in the shadows, listening.
  • Chapter 11: After seeing Chise being injured, Elias transforms into a monstrous form, and destroys Joseph's chimera with ease.
    • He then proceeds to push Joseph's Berserk Button by calling him Cartaphilus, to which he responds by making his arm take a monstrous shape. They are about to clash when Chise gets between them and gives Elias a Cooldown Hug.
    • Renfred doesn't let that momentary distraction go to waste. He shoots Cartaphilus in the back of the head for threatening his apprentice, with a bullet infused with magic to stop regeneration.
    • Upon witnessing Joseph's depravity, and recognizing him as the one responsible for what happened at Ulthar, Chise shows an uncharacteristic display of assertiveness, and declares that she won't allow him to take the church grim.
  • Chapter 12: In a rare display of Tranquil Fury, Chise kicks her magical powers into overdrive, and stars creating tarantula hawks out of nowhere, with the clear intent of attacking Cartaphilus and his spider chimera. It caused a great strain on her body, and it takes Elias physically restraining her for her to stop, not before losing one of his arms (temporarily) in the process.
    • When Cartaphilus catches up to them after Blue Flame helps them get away, he attempts to attack Alice and Renfred. Elias protects them with his magic, giving Alice the opportunity to blow off Cartaphilus' arm. Renfred claims they are even.
    • At his request, Chise decides to accept the church grim as her familiar. They perform a ritual which bounds them, and concludes with Chise giving the black dog a new name: Ruth. The black dog then attacks Joseph's chimera (which he created using the body of Ruth's late owner), and tears it apart. Cartaphilus decides to cut his losses and leave after that.
  • Chapter 17: Chise is treated to a beautiful show of magic under the moonlight.
  • Chapter 18: After a much-needed talk with Nevin, Chise finds the resolve to go talk with Elias. Instead of waiting for Lindel to get her a dragon, she uses her new staff to call upon the fairies, with the intention of using the same teleportation spell Elias used at the beginning of the series. The fairies, however, decide to instead surround Chise in phoenix-shaped flames, and fly her across the ocean. Chise ends up flying right into Elias' arms. Lindel can't help but remark that Chise is much more feisty than initially apparent.
    • The anime manages to make Chise's return to Elias even more amazing by using the opening theme as BGM.
  • Chapter 22: After spending several nights without sleep in order to create it, Chise finally completes the faerie salve, which allows Redcurrant and Joel to finally meet.
    • Joel is able to accept his impending death calmly, and consoles a distraught Redcurrant, telling her that he will always be with her, before offering her his remaining life.
  • Chapter 23: As she is being drowned by Shannon in a lake, Chise recalls Elias' words from when they first met, and finds the resolve to live, allowing her to wrestle Shannon away. Her injuries are cured afterwards, which is exactly what Shannon intended. Chise's body wasn't going to properly heal until Chise found the will to live.
    • Shannon's role cannot be understated. She managed to save Chise, despite the fact that her body was literally breaking down when she was brought to Shannon.
  • Chapter 24: Spriggan saves the fading banshee by turning her into a House Fey: the silky that watches over Elias and Chise's home.
  • Chapter 26: Alice gives a well-deserved kick in the nuts to the drug dealer harassing her and Chise.
  • Chapter 28: Stella is able to overcome her fear of the many things she doesn't understand in order to find her brother.
  • Chapter 29: Chise beats Ashen Eyes by using the were-animal pelt that Ashen Eyes himself gifted to her.
  • Chapter 31: Chise's will to live is shown once more, as she reaches out trying to get away from the roots Elias had trapped her in. Fortunately, someone manages to reach her, somehow, and give Chise her staff. Despite not understanding what just happened, Chise uses her staff to contact Ruth, so he could come and help her.
    • Chise finally gets Elias to release her by threatening to kill herself (even drawing blood in the anime). It was a bluff, of course, but it worked.
    • Lindel shows that he does not play around when it comes to the dragons under his protection. He kills one of the poachers who captured two dragon whelps by stabbing him In the Back, and is about to kill the rest when Cartaphilus takes control of them and teleports them, and the dragons, away.
  • Chapter 32: Chise's specialty is revealed to be putting people to sleep, which was hinted at earlier by her sleeping potion being way too strong. How does she discover it? By making Elias Ainsworth fall sleep, indefinitely, with a lullaby.
  • Chapter 33: Chise manages to deduce that Cartaphilus would plan to auction off at least one of the captured dragon whelps, and then contacts Seth to see if he can help them. He gets them an invitation.
  • Chapter 35: There is a rampaging dragon causing destruction to its surroundings, forcing the heroes to do everything in their power to stop it.
    • When they realize they need to distract the fire-breathing behemoth, the wizards start throwing stones at it. Unfortunately, this works too well, as the dragon decides to focus on them.
    • They are saved from being scorched alive by the timely apparition of Merituuli, who protects them from the fire and attacks the dragon as well.
    • Elias had the idea to absorb its magic away through Chise (who, as a sleigh beggy, is particularly adept at doing it), and then he would absorb it from her before it overwhelms her. So, once the dragon is distracted, he takes Chise and jumps to the back of the rampaging dragon.
    • Unfortunately, before Chise can absorb its magic away, the dragon breaks through the ceiling to escape the auction house. They barely hold on to it, but the dragon turns its head around and attacks them with a fireball. Elias moves Chise out of the way, but is blasted off from the dragon's back instead, forcing Chise to deal with it alone.
    • Finally, and against advice, Chise absorbs the dragon's power and emotions erupting outwards, saving London from a very, very dangerous and rampaging dragon, but at a terrible personal cost, as she has been cursed by the dragon's magic.
  • Chapter 40: Elias tries to put Chise to sleep, so she couldn't interfere in the ritual to pass the dragon's curse to Stella. As she is struggling to stay awake, Chise meets with Nevin once more, who encourages her to keep going. He also reveals that he is actually a Living Memory, and that the one truly pushing Chise forward is the part of herself that still hasn't given up on happiness. Chise then finds the strength to get up and stab herself in the leg to stay awake, and follows after Elias soon after.
    • Chise also makes it clear that Elias trying to sacrifice Stella (a completely innocent child) to save her, despite knowing damn well Chise would never agree to this, is completely unacceptable, to the point where she actually walks out on him and tells him she's not going to stick around if this is how it's going to be. Even better, when he later comes to rescue her from Josef, she tells him she genuinely appreciates it, but nope, he's not going to be Easily Forgiven for what he tried to pull with Stella. If he wants Chise to come home, his behavior must change going forward. And she does it all while still making it clear she cares about him regardless. She's definitely no longer a passive, helpless apprentice.
  • Chapter 41: Elias had previously been shown to be nigh unstoppable last time he took a monstrous form. This time? He is easily held down by the Spriggan, with Spriggan himself taking a monstrous form of his own, which completely dwarfed Elias'.
    • Fortunately for Elias, Titania and Oberon appear to get Spriggan to stand down, and offer their help in finding Chise. Titania, who is connected with the land, is able to search all over it, sending chills down the spine of anyone who had the Sight.
  • Chapter 42: In a Mama Bear moment, Chika practically cuts in half one of the apparitions harassing her and Chise, since it was biting into Chise's arm.
  • Chapter 43: A Living Memory of her mother starts attacking Chise, but is not able to do much, as Chise no longer had the slightest wish to die, thanks to all the people she has met over the series. Chise is finally able to let go of the pain of her past, and overcomes the "curse" her mother put on her all those years ago.
    • Chise also tells her mother she can't and won't forgive her for trying to kill her, but she's moving on with her life, and sincerely thanks her for all she sacrificed when Chise was young.
    • As soon as she wakes up, Chise turns the tables on Joseph, pinning him down and entering his memories by force, using her Dream Walker abilities intentionally for the first time.
  • Chapter 44: After Chise reads Cartaphilus' memories, he attempts to take her arm by force, and that's when the rescue party shows up. Elias, Ruth, Spriggan, and Titania (soon joined by Renfred, Alice and Blue Flame), all have a moment to shine while facing Cartaphilus' chimeras and wraiths.
    • As Chise is running after Joseph (with Elias and Ruth in her shadow), she encounters Marielle who, as a form of atonement for what she told Elias, transforms into a bull and takes after Joseph as well with Chise on her back, allowing them to catch up to him.
    • Once they reach him, Chise confronts him and promises to stop him from causing even more suffering, while her dragon arm mutates further and breaks out of its restraints.
  • Chapter 45: The chapter features the final showdown between Cartaphilus (helped by Ashen Eyes), and the main characters, and its appropriately epic.
    • Chise faces both Cartaphilus and Ashen Eyes with her growing dragon arm, and manages to hold her own.
    • Cartaphilus releases hundreds of centipedes from his body, which Ruth repels away with his fire breath.
    • The heroes are then joined by Ariel, who is pissed at the villains for hurting Chise. She pulls aside her differences with Elias and boosts his power, allowing him to defeat Ashen Eyes with ease.
    • Chise, with help from Ruth, manages to knock down Joseph, and uses a sleep spell on him. It doesn't work, as he still has Chise's eye, and then he proceeds to pierce through her stomach with his arm...
    • ...Which Chise then holds in place, allowing Ruth to rip Chise's eye from his eye socket. Elias then uses his thorns to keep him in place, giving Chise the opportunity to give Joseph a Cooldown Hug, which works. She then sings him a lullaby, and he falls sleep peacefully in her arms.
  • Chapter 48: Elias shows quick reflexes when saving a student that was insulting a Fiery Salamander from a fiery death, while simultaneously taking out said salamander.
  • Chapter 51: Gabriella and Elias easily take out the auditor from the Church and his creature, respectively, with Gabriella making sure he knows that she isn't the kind of lowly creature affected by his binding eyes.
  • Chapter 52: Stella is alone in a magical fog when she is joined by Ashen Eyes, who just happened to be around. Instead of being intimidated by him, she warms him not to harm anyone else, or he'll regret it. Amused, Ashen Eyes tells her that she has no power to force him to do anything, to which Stella responds by grabbing him by his clothes and making him lock eyes with her, swearing that she will find a way to make him pay, somehow.
  • Chapter 57: In a flashback, Renfred manages to save Alice by moving her out of the way from the attack of Cartaphilus' chimera, losing his arm in the process. Even as he is quickly bleeding out, he overcomes the shock and uses a spell to stop the pain and the bleeding, and drags his body to put himself between Cartaphilus and Alice, who was injured by the chimera.
  • Chapter 61: A nuckelavee attacks Chise and her classmates during their camping trip to Scotland.
    • The nuckelavee using its Prehensile Hair to attack the students causes Zoey to trip and lose his earmuffs, which results in his hair turning into snakes. Zoey then unintentionally causes the monster to stop in its tracks, as his snakes can paralyze people and other creatures.
    • While they manage to jump over a river, and therefore reach a somewhat safe place from the nuckelavee, Chise and Elias call upon the help of the each-uisge they saw earlier, in order to lead the nuckelavee as far as possible from the rest. Rían joins them, unwilling to let them take the risk alone.
    • As they reach the lake at the end of the river, the each-uisge rears to drop them off its back and into the lake. It then proceeds to face the nuckelavee by itself. It moves too quickly for the nuckelavee, evading its attack before kicking it into the lake, whose fresh water is lethal to it.
    • As Chise hesitates about leaving the nuckelavee to its fate, it suddenly grabs her by the leg and brings her underwater, intending to kill her if its the last thing it does. As Chise is about to be killed, the curses inside her start reacting, causing her left arm to once again transform, which she uses to tear the nuckelavee to pieces.
    • Meanwhile on the surface, the each-uisge intends to enter the lake to eat Chise, so Rían responds by transforming the key Issac gave him earlier into a halberd and putting himself between the each-uisge and the lake, making it clear that's not gonna happen.
  • Chapter 64: Seth deduces something is wrong when his bodyguard is nowhere to be found, and when a wolfman appears out of nowhere, he puts himself in front of Lucy and is stabbed through the chest. Thankfully, he had a protective talisman which reduced the extent of his injuries, but he was still badly hurt afterwards.
    • When the wolfman attempts to strike again, Chise gets in the way, and Ruth comes from her shadow and attacks the wolfman. Unfortunately, he is injured when another wolfman attacks him from his blind spot, which causes Chise to be hurt as well. Fortunately, this causes the matching rings Elias and Chise wear to activate, and let Elias know she is in trouble.
    • Ruth tries to keep them at bay with his fire breath while the others retreat, but the wolfmen soon catch up to them. Then, Elias arrives Just in Time, and uses his shadows to repel them.
    • Chise manages to open a path to the Extra-Dimensional Shortcut Hazel showed her, and carries Lucy inside, with Ruth carrying Seth not too far behind.

The Golden Yarn

  • The Vampire's Lover:
    • Its shown that at one point, Joel braved a storm in order to protect his rose garden. He was able to face strong winds and low visibility in order to put safety nets over his roses.
      • Unknown to him, he received help from Redcurrant, who managed to convinced an ariel to use her power lessen the impact of the storm in the area. Together, they manage to save almost half the roses.
  • Pyrite Knight
    • Lewis has several chances to show how good he is with his pyrite sword, as he faces several apparitions that wish to take the crystal he and Felicia are protecting. At one point, he sends Felicia away while he faces multiple apparitions by himself, and soon catches up to her, completely unscathed.
    • Felicia also gets to show her mettle during the incident. She decides to help the crystal return home, despite the fact that it is attracting dangerous creatures to her, and just abandoning it would bring no consequence to her. She eventually succeeds in getting it to safety among other crystals in the end.
    • A last apparition appears, trying to get to the crystals, so Felicia jumps between its fast moving arm and the crystals, getting knocked unconscious while Lewis takes care of it. She only survives thanks to her brooch taking the hit.
