Awesome / How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Go To

  • The recreation of the Grinch's classic evil grin.
  • The famous "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" song now sung by the Grinch himself. Retaining the original's music setup and lyrics, this version switches it up with Jim Carrey alternating vocal tones throughout and complimented with the Grinch creating his sled using the junk around his home.
  • Cindy Lou-Who isn't just The Cutie, she's the bravest little girl in Whoville. Let's see:
    • After doing extensive research into why the Grinch is the way that he is, she then interrupts the Whobilation nomination ceremony for the "Holiday Cheermeister" to nominate the Grinch, the last person most Whos would consider. And proceeds to show up the Mayor in public, by quoting from his own Book Of Who on why turning the Grinch away would be wrong, followed by convincing the entire crowd of Whos, including her parents! Keep in mind the Grinch has been a notorious outcast for decades, and she accomplished this in a few minutes.
    • And then she has the guts to walk right up to the Grinch's home at the top of the mountain, and invite him in person. Despite the Grinch's reputation, not to mention him trying very hard to spook her into leaving, she isn't the least bit scared of him. And when he eventually gets tired of her and dumps her down the trash chute, she laughs!
    • In short, we should all be so lucky to have Cindy Lou-Who's combination of a big heart and remarkable courage.
  • Just like the original 1966 special, he does yet again lift up the sleigh. Only this time it’s not just the power of Christmas giving him the energy, it’s seeing Cindy Lou in danger of going over with the sled that boosts him with Papa Wolf power.
    • After this, he lets out a triumphal holler which cuts to him skiing behind the sleigh which bounds down the slopes back to Whoville, with Cindy and Max in the passenger seat, with all three of them looking like they're having the time of their lifes.
      • When sleigh reaches a curve on the mountain, Grinch founds himself flying off the ledge, helding on for his dear life, screaming his lungs out as he spuns out and crashes… right into the gigantic sack. With a groan he fells back and lands hard in the front driver seat, right before the eyes of Cindy Lou, who asks is he's okay, which he just brushes off. Also doubles as heartwarming and funny moment.
Cindy Lou: Are you all right?
The Grinch: Are you kiddin’? The sun is bright and the powder’s bitchin’! (makes his way towards driver's seat, while Cindy lets a happy laugh) Now scoot over! It’s my turn to drive!
    • Probs for Grinch who rodes along the snow in this scene like a professional water-skier, flying across the hills like an eagle.
The Grinch: Spread eagle! (lands on snow with no problem) Nailed it!
    • James Horner score which plays during this scene, makes this scene even more awesome.
  • Lou stopping the Grinch's speeding sled with ONE HAND.
  • Building on the above—when the sleigh is careening into the town, Martha and Betty-Lou, who have spent the entire film obsessing over their Christmas decorations, immediately rush to their front yards and start ripping down everything they can to slow the vehicle down. They don't wait for a second to sacrifice their work to save Cindy and the Grinch. And it works.
    • Extra awesome points go to Betty-Lou for realizing that her one-sided rivalry with Martha is a waste of time. She doesn't hesitate to ask her former "arch-enemy" for help (which is itself an implicit admission that Martha's display is fuller and better than her own), and Martha, to her credit, doesn't hold the slightest grudge while she works to save Cindy.
  • Lou standing up to the Mayor, saying he's glad the Grinch stole his presents, because it helped him realize what Cindy spent the whole movie saying, that Christmas is more than all the gifts and contests, it's about love. Also counts as a Heartwarming Moment.
  • The Grinch's ENTIRE tirade against the Whos, calling them out on their hypocrisy and avarice when it comes to celebrating the holidays. While the Grinch is sadistic and grumpy at best, he definitely makes a good case about it.
The Grinch: Of course they are. That's what it's all about, isn't it? That's what it's always been about! Gifts. Gifts. Gifts-gifts-gifts-gifts-gifts-gifts! Do you know what happens to your gifts? They all come to me... in your garbage. You see what I'm saying? In... your... GARBAGE! I could hang myself with all the bad Christmas neckties I found at the dump! And the avarice... the avarice never ends! "I want golf clubs!" "I want diamonds!" "I want a pony so I can ride it twice, get bored, and sell it to make GLUE!" Look, I don't wanna make waves, but this whole Christmas season is... stupid! Stupid! Stupid! (looks up to and advances towards Martha May Whovier) There is, however, one teeny-tiny Christmas tradition I find... quite... meaningful.... (snatches the mistletoe off the ring box and holds it over his head) ....mistletoe. (Holds the mistletoe over his behind) Now pucker up and kiss it, Whoville! Boiiiiiiiiinggggg!
    • Then afterwards, he takes the razor the Mayor gave him, shaves his hair with it, and kisses him on the cheek, before proceeding to just go to town and wreck the Whobilation. After what the Whos did to him back then, and then showing that they learned nothing even decades later, it's so immensely satisfying to see Grinch bring hell upon them. Especially the Mayor, who only allowed the Grinch to attend just to bully and embarrass him one more time, and pretty much got what he deserved.
The Grinch: (smiles after shaving the Mayor's hair) Uh-oh. Somebody's..... FABULOUS!!
  • The film's glorious recreation of the Grinch's Christmas heist.
  • This Grinch is a Gadgeteer Genius. He managed to build a (mostly) working, flying sled, out of nothing but literal garbage and junk. And while this would've most likely taken days for someone to do, he did it in just a few hours! (This aspect of his character was kept and exaggerated in the 2018 version.)
  • In the original book and the animated film, the Grinch lifts the sleigh after "the true meaning of Christmas came through, and the Grinch found the strength of ten Grinches, plus two". The movie, while it doesn't have that line, does put that feat into perspective by showing us what the strength of just one Grinch is. It turns out that even prior to his Heel–Face Turn, the Grinch was already freakishly strong. It even went back to childhood when, fed up with all the bullying he's had to suffer through, the young Grinch lifts an entire Christmas tree and all its trimmings over his head and throws it across the room. That said, when the Grinch has his change of heart and saves the sleigh and all of Whoville's gifts, it's still a triumph.
    • Even more awesome by having the Grinch save not just the sleigh, but Cindy Lou as well!
    • Way before we see flashback of young Grinch lifting up the Christmas tree, we see him pulling out Cindy Lou from the pile of presents intended for the sorting machine without any effort! Talk about subtle foreshadowing!
      • The whole scene of him saving Cindy from sorting machine is this as well. While his quote before that is him declaring that he does it reluctantly, the way he shouts it makes it look like a Pre-Mortem One-Liner.
Grinch: Ugh. Bleeding hearts of the world, UNITE!
  • The scene near the end of the film where Martha publicly refuses the Mayor's marriage proposal. Doubles as a Heartwarming Moment.
Martha: Merry Christmas, August May-Who! I'm afraid I do have something for you. (Holds out the ring box to him) Your ring back. I'm sorry, but my heart belongs to... (looks directly at The Grinch) someone else.
  • Of a awesome music variety - "Where Are You Christmas?", a touching song, which is perfect song to end such a wholesome and emotional movie. It starts small and calm, before going into epic emotional finale. You can expect to shed a tear of happiness over the ending of the song. Also doubles as a combo of heartwarming and tearjerking moment.
