• Mary breaking the rules and returning the files.
• "Meet me in Montauk." Joel's tried everything to hide Clementine and prevent Lacuna Inc. from erasing her. Clementine and Joel decide to have the proper goodbye they never had, and somehow this small and simple thing manages to subvert the entire erasure process and bring Joel to their second meeting shown in the beginning of the film.
• A few of the dream sequences, most notably when Kate Winslet as Clementine is going through Joel's apartment with almost Teleport Spam, are one take with practical effects. Michel Gondry attempted to use as many practical effects and as few CGI moments as possible, and all fully work to add to the surreal atmosphere.
