• The Titanic arriving in New York in Raise the Titanic.
• In the climax of Deep Six (1984), Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino commandeer a riverboat and enlist the Sixth Louisiana Regiment, which is actually a group of Civil War re-enactors to try an intercept a barge containing Congresswoman Loren Smith and Vice President Vincent Margolin. They launch an attack on the barge and actually win the battle. Repeat, a group of re-enactors kicks the collective asses of a group of elite mercenaries. With Dixie playing at the same time, now that's badass.
• The Vigilante Execution (the first of many) of the truly wicked Big Bad from Vixen 03.
• The sheer number of passengers from the burning cruise ship that the NUMA research vessels manages to reduce at the beginning of Valhalla Rising
• Pitt and Giordano through a blizzard in a decades old snow cruiser to be the Big Damn Heroes for some outnumbered but hard-fighting special forces troops in Atlantis Found.
• The Siege at the old Legion of Lost Souls fort in Sahara, where Dirk, Al, some UN soldiers and the freed former slave laborers manage to fight back an entire army for quite some time.
• A villainous version in Treasure when the Dragon with an Agenda manages to successfully get revenge on his treacherous employer even after being blinded.
  • Also in Treasure a flight attendant and a former Air Force mechanic managing to crash-land a passenger plane after the flight crew is murdered.
• Saving Havana form being destroyed by towing the explosives out to sea in Cyclops, plus Dirk surviving the explosion and tidal wave that follows.
• The battle on the moon between Soviet desert warfare specialist and American scientists in Cyclops.
• Sandecker and theo others deflecting the titular weapon from Shock Wave to erupt volcanoes on the Big Bad's island, although Mood Whiplash kicks in when they find out that Dirk and Al are there to (fortunately they survive).
  • In the same book, the prologue scene following the battle for the raft between the cannibalistic convicts, and the non-cannibal ones siding with the soldiers and crew, especially the duel between the leaders of the two convict factions.

• In Night Probe:
  "Maybe we better throw a scare into them...To the ship off my port stern. This is the H.M.C.S. destroyer Huon. If you do not identify yourself immediately we shall open fire and blow you out of the water,"...a voice rasped out of the bridge speaker in a pronounced Texan drawl. "This is the USS guided missile cruiser Phoenix. Draw when you're ready, pardner."
