- Scott Brandon is shot repeatedly by the police, only to be promptly hit by a car after ignoring their bullets. In a series where the werewolves are the most powerful force in the world, it's nice to see the mundanes get some respect.
- Related to the Surprisingly Realistic Outcome section on the main page, when Elena goes up against Malcolm she is quickly overpowered. However, she fights with her mind and not her fists: she pretends to have been choked unconscious, drops her hands, and quickly changes two of her fingers in order to stab Malcolm in the neck. She then stands over him as he dies.
- Elena’s ability to resist the Change, as she does in Vengeance, is rare but not impossible in the books. Here, it’s stated that before her it was thought impossible to do so.
