A webcomic about a Bear Apocalypse is bound to have loads of awesome moments.

  • Dickinson Killdeer. True survivor and badass incarnate.
    • In his very first appearance he slams a giant axe into the skull of a bear that was seconds from mauling Joel. He proceeds to near-effortlessly slaughter the remaining three bears with nothing but his axe and a bow and arrow. When the last bear manages to get on top of him, he grabs a machete, decapitates the bear, and slam dunks its head with a battle cry. All Joel and his friends can do at the end of it is stare in awe.
    • Throughout the series he proves that despite being at least a little crazy, he's not stupid. He never goes toe-to-toe with a bear unless he has to, refuses to venture into bear infested territory at night, and most of his strategies involve escaping. He's very different from Nigel the Know-Nothing Know-It-All and Gogs the Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy.
    • The mere fact that he chooses to help Joel and his friends simply because it's the right thing to do. Getting Joel's dad to try and cure his migraines is just an added bonus.
    • In less than five minutes he tames Chuckles, the tiny crazy dog living in Joel's neighbourhood, and orders him to guard the house while he and the other survivors are taking shelter.
    • He arrives just in time to save Gogs's ass after he stupidly tries to battle a bear on his own and chews him out for putting his pride before his own safety.
    • Probably the best moment is when he finally gets sick of Nigel's bullshit. After the group force him to abandon his beloved van and Burton dies because of Nigel's stupidity, Nigel reaches his Rage Breaking Point and starts flipping out on the others, ranting over how they had to abandon his van and start taking orders from a 'fascist mountain man' just so they could save Joel's little brother. Once it becomes clear that Nigel has a complete disregard for human life and is going to get more people killed if they keep him around, Dickinson decides enough is enough. In the most satisfying moment of Volume One he silences Nigel with a punch to the face. He then literally throws Nigel out of the house, bluntly tells him that he doesn't have what it takes to survive, and essentially banishes the asshat from the group. By this point, Nigel has alienated his friends to the point that they only half-heartedly express reluctance at sending him out to fend for himself.
  • Joel gets his first moment just by choosing to go back to his hometown to save his little brother, even when it's being invaded by thousands of homicidal bears. When Nigel protests and claims that the town deserves its fate, a disgusted Joel shuts him down:
Nigel: We all agreed society is sick. I hate to say it but they kind of have this coming.
    Joel: Seriously, Nigel? You're sick.
    • When Dickinson decides to start teaching the younger survivors how to fight bears, Joel gets his first chance when a gravely wounded bear wanders near the house and Dickinson uses the opportunity to demonstrate how to make the bear impale itself on a wooden spear. Joel is brought forward to make the attempt with Dickinson's assistance and manages to finish the job by himself. Dickinson notes that Joel needs to be faster, but commends him for making a good start.
  • Joel, Andrea, Keller and Gogs all Take a Level in Badass when a Mole Bear burrows into Joel's living room and overpowers Dickinson. Andrea and Keller rush a wounded Gogs to the garage while Joel and Dickinson fend off the beast, and then rush back in with a lawnmower and shave its nose. As Joel, Andrea and Keller all try to force the bear down onto the lawnmower, Gogs clambers onto its back and hammers a tent spike into its skull, sending it face first into the spinning blades. Once the blood stops flying, Dickinson admits that he's impressed.
  • When they've barricaded themselves in the garage, Gogs shows the others how to convert gas tanks into flamethrowers. Coupled with a few balloons filled with gasoline, they prove to be efficient weapons against the bears surrounding the Morely residence.
  • Though undoubtedly a sad moment, Keller's heroic sacrifice at the very end of Volume One definitely counts. Gogs is set ablaze when a bear on fire gets too close to his gasoline soaked clothes, and despite Joel's efforts it looks like he'll burn alive. Suddenly a jet of water soaks Gogs and saves him from death or serious burns, and it's quickly revealed that Keller dropped her gas tank flamethrower and broke away from the group to spray him with a garden hose. Unfortunately this leaves her at the mercy of two bears, and she has just enough time to wish the others luck before getting torn apart before their very eyes.
