• Passepartout rescues Aouda by pretending to be her dead husband. He lies still while the Rajah's servants carry him out to the funeral pyre, doesn't flinch even when they light the pyre with him and Aouda on it, then calmly gets up and carries Aouda to safety — still dressed in the dead man's clothes — while the spectators flee in terror.
