...A Study in Subtly Awesome Moments for Ascended Extras? Yeah.
- In all seriousness, though, Inspector Lestrade is simply made of awesome in this story. Recurring character ascended to The Hero, the Team Dad, the Parental Substitute for a certain convalescent amateur, the Determinator, the Only Sane Man, the Not So Stoic professional, and the guy who gets to give Sherlock Holmes the What the Hell, Hero? speech several times.
- Oh, and his Superpower of Snark. See the Funny entry for more info on that.
- Mary is also made of win in this story, having gone from being a spirited lady to an honest-to-goodness Action Girl. She is also The Heart, Lestrade's Hyper-Competent Sidekick, the Team Mom, The Smart Girl, the Determinator - all of which adds up to, you guessed it: Pintsized Powerhouse.
- The fact that she got the drop on Lestrade in the first place and has made herself indispensable ever since is cause for applause.
Holmes: "Lestrade, have you gone insane? How could you bring Mary into this? If Watson had had the least notion... that you, or anyone, would involve his wife..."
Lestrade: "You talk as if I had some kind of choice in the matter, Mr Holmes. The first I even knew that Mary was following me was on the boat from Newhaven. Came up beside me while I was hanging over the rail and offered me a ginger pill, as calm and unruffled as you please."- And then coming to be a surrogate big sister/mom to the Great Detective, of all people??
- Plus, the fact that she's come through all this tragedy and trauma, the greatest of which being the murder of her husband... without losing her baby to miscarriage. Pintsized Powerhouse, indeed.
- Lestrade has the common sense not to leave a loaded gun around.
