Mount Head or Atama-yama is a 2002 animated short film (10 minutes) by Koji Yamamura.

A rather stingy man scrounges cherries from the ground in the park rather than pay for them. The man, who seems to be a hoarder ("he picked up anything useful, and his house was surrounded by tons of garbage"), decides to eat the pits of the cherries along with the fruit. One day he notices a plant growing out of the top of his head. He clips the green shoot a few times but it always grows back, so eventually the man gives up...and the shoot grows into a cherry tree.

Then things get weird.

The animation can be viewed here

Tropes:

  • Bizarrchitecture: The buildings that make up the city that the man lives in are irregularly shaped and bendy.
  • Body Horror: The man has a tree growing out of his head.
  • Driven to Suicide: Eventually, after plunging into a Recursive Reality loop, the man drowns himself in the pond atop his head.
  • Droste Image: Formed when the man somehow manages to visit the top of his own head.
  • How We Got Here: The short starts with the man cutting the sprout poking out of his head, then jumps back in time to find him picking cherries in the park.
  • Mind Screw: If it weren't weird enough that the man has a goddamn tree growing out of his head, people somehow start coming to the top of his head to enjoy his cherry tree when it blooms in the spring. And they aren't tiny people either—they look tiny when dozens of them are picnicking on top of the man's head, but when one loses his shoe, the shoe is regular-sized when it falls off the man's head and lands in his coffee cup.
  • Narrator: The narration is done in Japanese "rakugo" style, in which a man tells a wryly comic story.
  • Plant Hair: A tree grows out of his head!
  • Recursive Reality: The man eventually pulls the tree out of his head by the roots. Unfortunately for him this leaves a depression on the top of his head, which fills with water when it rains, forming a lake. A lake that crowds of people visit, just as they were visiting the cherry tree. The man then somehow visits the top of his own head, going to the lake. This is followed by a really trippy sequence in which the camera continually zooms in to the man on top of his head, visiting his lake...then zooming in to the top of his head, where of course there's a lake, which he is visiting...then zooming in to the top of his head again...
  • Setting Update: The story is a modern adaption of a classic Rakugo of the same name.
