Analysis / Shell-Shocked Veteran

Go To

Due to the emphasis Western media (especially American media) tends to put on the more "glorious" aspects of war, this trope tends to be Averted in most works of fictions. As an example, most movie characters (and characters from war-based video games) are shown to go through things that would realistically leave them unable to function as human beings, let alone live a normal life.

War Is Hell, but this is often ignored. Many a person who hasn't experienced war firsthand, known a veteran or heard the testimony of a veteran will assume that most people can go to war and come out just fine, unless they are a "wimp". The fact that the human mind will have a better grasp of something after seeing it or experiencing it doesn't help.

Almost any character who doesn't end up at least somewhat traumatized after war or other brutal events counts as an aversion of this trope, unless they're a psychopath (or in the lucky minority).

Of course, the aversion of this trope counts as one of those Acceptable Breaks from Reality, since The Protagonist ending up a gibbering wreck or street person after taking so many hits to their Sanity Meter isn't a very happy ending. However, it should be noted that, since the 80's, the aversion of this trope has become less and less popular, and it has become somewhat normal to play this trope straight.
