Analysis / Franchise Original Sin

Some common causes of Franchise Original Sin:

  • The Artifact: A character or plot point made sense when it was first introduced, but remained even when changes in the story made it less relevant.
  • Flanderization: A character flaw was originally seen as funny or interesting, but became a bigger and bigger part of the character until it became annoying.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: A plot point is well-received, so the writers try to re-use it in later installments until it becomes predictable and repetitive.
  • Serial Escalation: As everything becomes bigger, so do the flaws.
  • Unbuilt Trope: The earlier works put more thought into things and have a proper justification for why things work the way they do. The newer works just copy tropes from older works without considering the Fridge Logic behind it.
