5The story tells the tale of the titular El Hijo, the son of a widowed female farmer simply trying to make a living. One day, while she and El Hijo are out, their home is attacked by bandits. Deciding life has become too dangerous for him, his mother gives El Hijo to a monestary in the hopes he'll be raised in a safe environment.

7El Hijo, however, feels that the monastic life just isn't for him. So, one day, he decides to sneak out under the cover of the shadows and go off to find his mother.
