There are few things cooler than heroically jumping through a plume of fire. In acknowledgement of that, many many video game and platform settings put it upon themselves to create scenarios to make it happen. Flame Spewer Obstacle, also known as Flame Trap, is when environmental hazards exist for the sole purpose of periodically erupting into flames. This generally takes the form of a timing puzzle, but the fire can also be proximity triggered, or it can be just a static obstacle that must be entirely avoided.

This type of hazard that is most commonly encountered in platformer games but can also be found in other genres. In contrast, flame spewers are almost nonexistent in real life outside very specific areas of specific factories.

Flame spewers can most commonly be encountered in the following forms:
* Flames emitting from broken pipes (usually gas pipes)
* Flames emitting at the ends of a pipe (also usually gas pipes), particularly ends of flame vents
* Flames being shot by specific flame emitters and flame traps
* Flames emerging from cracks in the ground
* Flamethrower-equipped enemies shooting with it through slits

Such hazards are most commonly encountered in LethalLavaLand and EternalEngine. Sometimes also present and functional in a TempleOfDoom. Also a staple inclusion of any self-respecting DeadlyTrainingArea or ConveyorBeltODoom. Such places have NoOSHACompliance.

The earliest instance of such obstacle can be found in VideoGame/JumpBug, released in 1981. Usage of flame spewers as an obstacle became more widespread during the late 1980s and has remained a fairly common obstacle in platforming games ever since.

* Fireballs in case whatever it is spits out separate balls of fire rather than a stream of fire. Or when fireballs make up a rotating fire stick
* FireBreathingWeapon in case the flame comes out of an actively carried weapon
* LavaPit which is sometimes the source of flames
* SteamVentObstacle: In case it's steam that is used as a hazard
* WeaponizedExhaust: When exhausts of whatever is actively used as a weapon

* VideoGame/CodeNameViper: Level 4 has statues that shoot out flames.
* VideoGame/Contra:
** The first game has Energy Zone that has many broken pipes where flames shoot out.
** VideoGame/ContraIIITheAlienWars has leaky pipes in the first stage that leak flame jets. Later in the stage, jets of flame emerge from the burning ground.
* VideoGame/Huntdown: Sonny Rooster's stage and Ringo Road Rage's stage has pipes that regularly shoot out flames.
* VideoGame/INinja: There are a few sections with flame emitters that shoot out jets of flame every few seconds.

* Mega 'VideoGame/Turrican: Certain spots on the ground emit smoke which indicate these spots also fire flames.
* VideoGame/ViceProjectDoom: Early in the game, there are metal grills that constantly emit flames. Later, in WombLevel, there are turquoise flame emitters instead.
* VideoGame/XKaliber2097: Flame pipes in the city level floor constantly shoot out flames but during bursts the flames go much higher.

* VideoGame/ANNOMutationem: At the Walter Raleigh, the chief warden activates traps throughout the ship that are filled with bursting flamethrowers to disperse fire strikes after intervals.
* VideoGame/DragonsLair: Return To The Lair has a few flame emitters. In Main hall there is an oven that shoots fire and in Lava Domain, there are flame vents on the floor that regularly spew out fire.
* VideoGame/HarryPotterAndTheGobletOfFire: Some stages have heads mounted on walls that breathe out fire.
* Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda:
** VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaLinksAwakening: Inside the mountains, halfway to the last dungeon, there is a cannon that shoots fireballs down a narrow hallway. You need the Mirror Shield to deflect the fire and get past the cannon.
** VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTearsOfTheKingdom: Flame emitters are present in a handful of dungeons. The game also encourages you to build them yourself, with the ultrahand ability.
* VideoGame/TheLEGOMovieVideogame: In a section of the mission "Bricksburg Construction" titled "The Long Way Down", the hard path, which is required to go down in the story mode, contains several floating and spinning flame emitters that Emmet must dodge before he gets to the Piece of Resistance.
* VideoGame/MissionImpossible1990: Flame jets that shoot out intermittently are a dangerous hazard, and become especially common in the last stage of the game. Like all fire attacks in the game, they deal half your life bar in one hit, and their random nature makes them especially tricky to dodge.
* VideoGame/Pikmin games each have their fair share of fire geysers. Red Pikmin are ImmuneToFire, which makes them the ideal choice for dealing with them. These geysers can make it difficult for other Pikmin types to cross, so the Reds can be used to traverse such areas, or destroy the geysers so that other Pikmin can cross.
* VideoGame/Slain has floor hazards that shoot out tall flames at regular intervals.
* A common obstacle in Franchise/TombRaider, they're at their deadliest in the Platform/PlayStation era of games where Lara only has seconds to put the flames out if she isn't able to dodge them in time.

* VideoGame/FinalFight. In the original arcade game, certain areas inside buildings have bursts of flames coming out of the floor. If the player character(s) or their opponents contact the flames, they take damage.
* VideoGame/NineMonkeysOfShaolin has two levels, respectively set in a forge and a burning village, where fire will shoot out of holes randomly and burn you on contact, with your character momentarily set alight and the flames draining bits of your health. 78

* VideoGame/Blood1997 features the occasional flamethrower wall trap. These are especially dangerous because fire deals severe DamageOverTime, and the more a living thing (whether Caleb or an enemy) stays in contact with fire, the longer they burn for and the more damage it deals per second. Stronger traps fire explosive fireballs akin to the Napalm Launcher's, that deal high damage, cause SplashDamage and also sets things on fire.
* VideoGame/DoomEternal: There are some corridors, particularly platforming segments, where the walls have flame emitters. Cultist Base has an arena where, after some time, damaging flames rise up on the edges which extinguish after you have finished the fight.
* VideoGame/IronStorm: One of the obstacles in the final level at the Reichstag is a gas flame spouting from a pipe. It's an instant kill if the player steps in it, there's a whole detour to do (including a roof where he's shot at by a gunship) to stop the gas flow first.
* VideoGame/SeriousSam4: In the first level of Siberian Mayhem, there is a hallway where puffs of flame are regularly spewed out from the pipework. The flames are telegraphed with steam.

* Later expansion packs of VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft have incorporated several of these, either in the open world itself or in dungeons and raids (most often in those of the LethalLavaLand variety, of course). One of the most infamous is a corridor filled with "flames of ice"-things in Icecrown Citadel to reach the raid's main hub after undead Dranosh Saurfang is defeated. There are also several in the infinite/solo dungeon Torghast in Shadowlands, as parts of the numerous traps conceived by Painsmith Raznal, a servant of the Jailer.
