4Anthony John Hancock (12 May 1924 -- 25 June 1968) was an English comedian and actor.

6He found fame with the Creator/{{BBC}} radio series ''Radio/HancocksHalfHour'' which was a smash hit between 1954 and 1961. the radio show, which also made stars out of Creator/SidJames and Creator/KennethWilliams, transferred to the still-embryonic Creator/{{BBC}} television network.

8Hancock was also a comic actor in films, such as ''Film/TheRebel'' (''Call Me Genius'' in the USA), ''Film/ThePunchAndJudyMan'', and ''Film/ThoseMagnificentMenInTheirFlyingMachines'', and episodes of the ''Hancock'' TV series, such as ''The Blood Donor'' and ''Radio Ham'' are considered to be timeless classics of the half-hour TV comedy format.

10Dogged by depression and insecurity all his life, after his career went into a decline and he came out alive from a bad car crash, he committed suicide in 1968 at age 44 with barbiturates and vodka.
