* WhatAnIdiot: The village yakuza were actually a hidden clan of ninja. Why bother hiring a ronin to kill off your rivals, and all the escalating attention that draws (more powerful ronin showing up or getting hired), when you could have quietly done it with zero evidence linking back to you?
** No one said that all of them were trained ninjas. We only see a handful of what appears to be ninjas in the final act, where they try (and fail) to ambush Zatoichi. Also, Hattori offers himself to the gang. The gang has had no intention of actively looking for extra muscle until he brings up the subject.

Not approved by the thread.

* MagnificentBastard: Ichi is so ridiculously competent and badass that is hard not to think of him as such.

* AntiClimaxBoss: Justified in that the kind of SingleStrokeBattle depicted in the final duel often happened in real life between any two skilled kenjutsu practitioners (and here happens specifically due to a plot point - the grip style), but the fact that Hattori goes down without proving to be a menace for Ichi can be somewhat jarring for Western action fans.
