** Not adding the ''Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce 2'' characters (other than Cai Wenji, who debuted in that game) like Shi Huangdi, Xiang Yu, Xi Wangmu and Ji Man/King Mu is a missed opportunity because they are the historical figures from the Zhou and Qin dynasties, considering that there were three Heian historical figures (Kiyomori, Yoshitsune and Benkei) in ''Warriors Orochi''. Likewise, for the ''Godseeker'' characters, Lei Bin and Lixia, because the latter has magic powers that suit her as a Mystic character. It also would bring a lot of interesting dynamics among the DW and SW characters.

* WhatAnIdiot: ''Ultimate'''s storyline has several, but Yinglong really takes the cake. [[spoiler: Tamono tells him that his emperor is using the Divine Mirror to enslave demons, a lie that should only have fooled a five-year-old at best, and he buys it. Then after a feeble effort to investigate, he immediately jumps to conclusions and tries to destroy the mirror, falling right into Tamono's trap and dooms himself forever, and would have doomed the Mystic Realm too if not for Fu Xi and co. travelling back in time to stop him]].

* PlayTheGameSkipTheStory: In the fourth game, players enjoy the gameplay and the gimmicks but they find the main storyline to be very linear and less engaging, particularly with the last chapters due to Zeus' flimsy excuse of rebuilding the world [[spoiler:despite that it's for good intention]] and Odin's generic motive of wanting total annihilation. Likewise, many characters, such as those who played big roles in the previous games, are pushed aside near the closing chapters which is the reason several players prefer the side missions where these characters have their moments to shine.

** In ''4'', the presence of clones in the battlefield breaks the immersion when you're playing most especially when you thought the character that you have selected to play is important in the mission because they're the ones leading this mission except you ran into their clone in the battlefield instead of their generic replacements. So imagine you're playing as Lu Xun because you're doing his mission except that there's his clone running around instead of his generic son. Of course, there's the recommended characters guide which would prevent you from encountering that but most players choose to ignore it and rather play their favorite characters instead. It gets worse that regardless which character you played, there's no special conversation initiated whenever you encountered other characters in the battlefield as if the player characters are merely spectators. It's only in some side missions where the player characters get to talk for a bit.

* ToughActToFollow: Odin in the fourth game. * ContestedSequel: ''Warriors Orochi 4'' is this to some, unfortunately. While gameplay and graphics wise it does have a step up from its predecessors, the biggest reasons it is considered arguably a step down is the cutting of features and modes that even were in vanilla 3, the complete absence of alternate colors and outfits which are listed as DLC, and the complete lack of crossover characters, which is one of the big reasons that 3 was so well received.

Example Indentation and the statement about Joan and Achilles is already in the second bullet.

*** Similarly with Achilles, the exclusion of Joan of Arc. While she has no dealings with Zeus, both ''VideoGame/BladeStormTheHundredYearsWar'' and ''VideoGame/WarriorsLegendsOfTroy'' are based on history as opposed to other fictional collaborations so they could fit in perfectly within the context of ''Warriors Orochi'' as the gateway for French, England, Greek and Troy groups (this can include other characters like Edward the Black Prince, La Hire, Gilles de Rais, Ajax, Hector, Penthesilea). ''4: Ultimate'' fixes this where Joan and Achilles are two of the three returning guest characters, but the idea of the whole ''Bladestorm'' and ''Troy'' joining the crossover are still not being considered.

While it did explain Loki's motives of wanting revenge, it was never explained properly particularly with Odin killing his friends. Though he did mention that Freya, Tyr and possibly Thor are his comrades, his story of revenge would make more sense if they introduced his family members from Norse mythology such as his wife Sigyn who is said to be very loyal to him, his son Jormungandr who faces Thor during Ragnarok and his grandsons Hati and Skoll who are the major players of Ragnarok]].

It gets worse that WordOfGod mentioned that Lu Xun was supposed to have a Deification form but didn't made it in the final cut because he's a strategist not FrontlineGeneral. However, many Wu fans find that excuse hypocritical because Mitsunari, who is also a strategist, gets a Deification form and the opening cutscene of the game shows the bracelet landing near Lu Xun's location.

** The showdown between Orochi X and the original Orochi was hyped in the trailer for ''4'' but in the game itself, it met a lot of disappointment as it didn't add much to the story. Likewise, his return wasn't fully explained in the story aside from a blink-if-you-see cutscene [[spoiler:when Odin turns Shuten Doji into Orochi X and another lights flies out which is hinted to be the original Orochi]]. Many players find this missed opportunity when it's revealed that the original Orochi [[spoiler:still has Yinglong's presence in him and you can only recruit him via camp upgrade which gives a possiblity to bring Yinglong back and killing him is already pointless since Da Ji and Kiyomori would still resurrect the poor guy ''again'']].

** Another issue in ''4'' happens to be each character only having a total of 2 different characters they bond with with only 2 camp conversations each one. While some unique conversations not done in other installments have been done (e.g. Guan Suo and [[spoiler:Kyubi]] of all things), it seemed to be another way for Koei to cut corners in accordance to the increased roster.

* ToughActToFollow: Odin in the fourth game. While he's established as a huge threat to the heroes and has one of the most awesome movesets which also makes him the most overpowered character in the entire game, his characterization and portrayal is very flat. While his endgame [[spoiler:which is to destroy life because he wants to eliminate anything that threatens his life after surviving Ragnarok]] may justify his villainy, it comes off as very generic as he keeps acting how evil he is despite that most of his actions are done [[OffstageVillainy offscreen]] and had his agent, [[spoiler:Loki]], [[TheHeavy do his bidding]]. It doesn't help that you encounter and defeat him two times in the last chapter which makes [[VillainDecay all the grandeur of being a threat look like a big joke]]. In the final mission, [[AntiClimaxBoss you can easily defeat him in a few minutes]] once you have level up your team well and use the right weapon attributes and Sacred Treasures. In contrast to Orochi who established himself as a threat at the beginning and Tamamo [[spoiler:who is responsible for kickstarting Yinglong's downfall to Orochi]], Odin is not very compelling as a dangerous villain. A lot of players even consider Hundun, who is just a BonusBoss, and Zeus, who is actually one of the good guys, as a difficult opponent to beat with than Odin.

At the very least, Koei has acknowledged this and announced that ''4: Ultimate'' will give more details on Odin's characterization.

** Similarly with Achilles, the exclusion of Joan of Arc. ''4: Ultimate'' fixes this where Joan and Achilles are two of the three returning guest characters.

** Players hated the new user interface in the fourth game due to how cluttered and difficult it is to sort out and find certain characters. Fortunately, the expansion brings back the original [=WO3=] user interface where all the characters are sorted by faction (''Dynasty Warriors'' characters) and game debut (''Samurai Warriors'' and ''Warriors Orochi'' characters).

** We never go to see the rest of the Olympians and the Norse gods, not even a cameo or flashback. Thor? Tyr? Heimdall? Frigga? Freya? Baldur? Hel? Died before or during Ragnarok. Poseidon? Hades? Apollo? Hercules? Hera? Hermes? [[spoiler:The ''real'' Perseus?]] No debut for you. Outside of her hair being mentioned as the second ingredient used to create the Deification bangles, Medusa never showed up either.

** The fact that generic Greek and Norse officers are named after famous heroes and minor gods such as Kratos and Forseti can either make any fan of mythology cringe or laugh on its ridiculousness. ''[[VideoGame/GodOfWarSeries Especially Kratos]]''[[labelnote:*]]The ''God of War'' protagonist has become more known than the actual minor God named Kratos in the Greek myth, so people would've thought of the GOW character more than the deity when someone said 'Kratos' in context of Greek mythology.[[/labelnote]]

* ContestedSequel: ''Warriors Orochi 4'' is this to some unfortunately.

** Two ''VideoGame/DynastyWarriors 9'' characters, Zhou Cang and Xin Xianying, have gotten their [=DW9=] moveset converted into a [=DW8=] moveset format (via ''VideoGame/WarriorsAllStars'' and ''VideoGame/DynastyWarriors Unleashed'') and with ''[=DW8=] Empires'', there will be some weapons from ''8'' in general that will end up unused. Yet Koei sticked with their principles to not include anyone from [=DW9=] at all. Likewise, ''VideoGame/SamuraiWarriors Spirit of Sanada'' used the same moveset as [=SW4=], but none of the characters from that game got involved. This is justified because ''[=WO4=]'' had been in development since 2016 which explains why the [=DW9=] and ''Spirit of Sanada'' characters are not going to be in the game ''yet''. Then, it gets weirder that their generic NPC counterparts don't show up in the game itself.

** [[spoiler:With the reveal of Loki as one of the main antagonists of the fourth game, his backstory and characterization could have gone better. Except the Ragnarok storyline is shoehorned in the last chapter which is explained by Abe Seimei. It would be interesting how Ragnarok went and how it affected Loki after being depowered by Odin. While it did explained Loki's motives of wanting revenge, it was never explained properly particularly with Odin killing his friends. Though he did mentioned that Freya, Tyr and possibly Thor are his comrades, his story of revenge would make more sense if they introduced his family members from Norse mythology such as his wife Sigyn who is said to be very loyal to him, his son Jormungandr who faces Thor during Ragnarok and his grandsons Hati and Skoll who are the major players of Ragnarok]].
