Even then, many fans have reevaluated the original scene and decided that Optimus probably would have died anyway because his mercy gave Megatron the chance to reach for a weapon (though the comic does address this by having Megatron miss and Prime finally taking the shot in response), meaning Hot Rod wasn't fully responsible for his death anyway.
