* ConsolationAward: Many thought Creator/DenzelWashington won Best Actor to compensate many lauded but not awarded performances that preceded. Besides, Washington had already won an Oscar, albeit as Best ''Supporting'' Actor, for ''Film/{{Glory}}''.

** Creator/RaymondCruz is Sniper. While Cruz had a number of small to medium size roles in various projects before this (perhaps most notably playing a soldier who is recruited to be part of a secret and illegal mission in ''Film/ClearAndPresentDanger''), he wouldn't gain widespread mainstream notice until he played Tuco in ''Series/BreakingBad'' almost a decade after this film.

* HilariousInHindsight: In this film, Ethan Hawke portrays a cop trying to resist being corrupted by Alonzo. In Fuqua's later movie ''Film/BrooklynsFinest'', Ethan Hawke portrays a cop who's as dirty as they come and even dresses similar to Alonzo, leading many commentators to note that he's basically playing a Hoyt who went to the dark side. In this movie directed by Creator/AntoineFuqua, Creator/DenzelWashington's character is in debt with the Russian mafia. Come 2014, Fuqua directs ''Film/TheEqualizer'', with Washington playing the main character who fights the Russian mafia!

* HarsherInHindsight: Alonzo's boast about closing cases that resulted in "15,000 man-years" of prison time. At time of filming, there was no shortage of recent police scandals, to raise doubts about how legitimate those busts were. Since then, though, there have been even more high-profile scandals[[note]]the Chicago Police under Jon Burge, Maricopa County in Arizona, etc.[[/note]], along with a growing list of exonerations due to police and prosecutor misconduct, that may only increase those doubts for later viewers.

* UnfortunateImplications: Defied. During filming, the NAACP came on set to confront Denzel Washington, arguing that it was rare enough to have a black lead in a film in general [[spoiler:and that this trope would occur if said black lead turned out to be a corrupt, violent antagonist. Denzel in turn argued that it was impractical to expect him to only play squeaky-clean heroes, and that the quality of his acting would speak for itself.]] This ultimately fell in the latter's favor, as the film was well-received and earned him an (albeit overdue) Oscar.

Alonzo was explicitly setting Jake up to die and didn't know that Jake had picked up the wallet, nor did he know of Letty's connection to Smiley.

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: [[spoiler: Did Alonzo set Hoyt up with Smiley knowing that Smiley would find the wallet and spare him or was he actually setting him up to die?]] His dialogue in the initial scene with Letty implies the former but it's never solidly confirmed. Much of Alonzo's motivations and how much he's actually planned things up is very ambiguous.

** It's never specifically said that The Three Wise Men ARE corrupt. It might be assumed as such since they are so cynical and jaded, but the lawyer, whom Alonzo says will "snatch [Hoyt's] nuts out and use them for dice" if he screws up, seems genuinely worried that Alonzo won't survive his deadline with the Russians, and the long-faced older cop feels the need to reiterate what Alonzo already knows: the Russians will whack him, regardless of his status as a well-respected cop or not. Even Harris Yulin's character, the cigar-smoking detective who says he's gonna find the subject of his story and kill him, can't be written off entirely, because cops can be said to '''talk''' about all the stuff they'd like to do to various perps they know will get off but will never actually '''do.'''
