* FunnyAneurysmMoment: In Autumn 2012, about a year after his death, a massive Scotland Yard investigation confirmed that Creator/JimmySavile was a real-life DepravedKidsShowHost -- specifically, a serial sex offender who abused youths who appeared on this show -- which effectively makes all of the episodes he presented this. That said, the scandal has affected many more people than just Savile -- Dave Lee Travis (another former presenter of the show) was also arrested in connection with various sex offences, for example. (Travis was eventually found not guilty on 12 out of 14 counts against him; he was subsequently found guilty of at least one count of indecent assault as of 23rd August 2014, though cleared of another and on a third the jury were ''still'' undecided.)

* CriticalResearchFailure: Appeared to be in play, but ultimately averted in one 1982 episode. Music/DexysMidnightRunners performed a version of Music/VanMorrison's "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" in front of a massively blown up photo of the wrong J. Wilson. Not black American soul legend Jackie, but white Scottish darts legend Jocky Wilson. Turns out putting the wrong picture up there was intentional; the gag was lead singer Kevin Rowland's idea (he later claimed he and his bandmates sometimes called the song "Jocky Wilson Said" during rehearsal and recording of their cover).

* OvershadowedByControversy: The show's reputation is forever tainted by being hosted by Jimmy Savile and Dave Lee Travis, both serial sex offenders.

* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments: Any time a band or musician decides to screw around with the rules where they have to lip sync and/or are required to have a backing track.
** When Music/{{Squeeze}} performed "Up the Junction" on the Christmas 1979 episode, they decided to swap instruments; lead singer and guitarist Glenn Tilbrook pretended to play the drums, keyboardist Jools Holland pretended - very unconvincingly - to play lead guitar, drummer Gilson Lavis pretended to take over bass guitar, and rhythm guitarist Chris Difford pretended to play the keyboards.
** Music/{{Nirvana}}'s performance of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Kurt Cobain already didn't like performing the song to begin with so he decided to mime playing his guitar, change the lyrics to be more darker (he opened with "Load up on drugs, kill your friends"), and sing in a low Music/{{Morrissey}}-like voice. Krist Novoselic joined in the fun by swinging his unplugged guitar around and Dave Grohl deliberately hit the cymbals on the beats where he's supposed to hit the drums.
** Music/{{Oasis}} mixed things up with their performance of "Roll With It" by having Liam Gallagher switch places with Noel Gallagher. Noel put on sunglasses so nobody would notice it's him lip syncing and Liam didn't even try to pretend to play Noel's guitar parts well.
** Near the end of Music/SuziQuatro's performance of "Devil Gate Drive", her keyboardist suddenly decided to join her in dancing to the song for a brief moment, despite the fact that the playtrack track at that moment still had keyboard sounds in it. Her drummer did the same thing after the keyboardist went back, and eventually she herself decided to stop miming her bass playing in favor of dancing.
