* FanNickname: A decade after the Year of Luigi, many fans noticed that Princess Peach was getting an atypical amount of proactive roles, such as being more of an ActionGirl in ''WesternAnimation/TheSuperMarioBrosMovie'', being a fully playable character in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBrosWonder'' and a remake of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG'', and especially a long-awaited second starring role in ''VideoGame/PrincessPeachShowtime''. As such, many fans declared 2023-2024 the unofficial "Year of Peach", despite it not landing on a 5x anniversary of her debut in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1''. Even [[https://www.ign.com/articles/it-may-be-mario-day-but-its-finally-princess-peachs-year this article from IGN]] and [[https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/brie-larson-princess-peach-showtime-interview/ this interview]] with Creator/BrieLarson would get in on the trend.

* HarsherInHindsight: The event was very heartwarming for the most part, but some things that happened during the year ended up making the decision to do it rather uncomfortable in hindsight:
** Nintendo reported a 46.4 billion yen ($456 million) operating loss during that fiscal year, making ''The Year of Luigi'' one of only ''three'' years in Nintendo's entire history as a gaming company where it lost money. That's not a good look, Luigi.
** Creator/DannyWells, the first man to give Luigi his voice outside of the video games (being his live-action actor for ''Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow'' and his voice actor for the animated parts of said show), passed away on November 28th, 2013, during the year devoted to the character he played on TV.
** The irony of rereleasing ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiSuperstarSaga'' not long after the Year of Luigi finished. It wouldn't be too bad if a), Luigi didn't get as many ButtMonkey moments, b), the instruction manual wasn't [[LampshadeHanging lampshading it]], and c), if there was less irony coming from the ButtMonkey moments due to another Mario and Luigi game, ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiDreamTeam'', which was all about the green plumber himself.

** The fact that Nintendo reported a 46.4 billion yen ($456 million) loss making Year of Luigi one of their worst financial years to date. One has to wonder if we'll ever see another Year of Luigi after this.
