He was shut out by his beloved big brother and didn't understand why, was mocked by so-called friends for being understandably upset when said brother ran away, was forced to hide [[spoiler:his jester magic]] by his mother out of fear of being labelled a freak (to the point where he wasn't allowed to have hobbies outside his talent, killing his joy in it), had trouble making and keeping friends, was sabotaged and humiliated by his crush, and finally, had a feud with the aforementioned brother in which they blame all their own colthood misery on each other. With that in mind, it's no wonder Tomato turned out to be such a grouch.
*** Within ''Brotherly Bonding Time'', he's nearly been killed several times, humiliated quite a few times, held hostage at least twice, and [[spoiler:was transformed into a vampire in Las Pegasus, and was hypnotized to be Kazam's bloodthirsty minion]]. That last one especially lingers with him throughout the story, thanks to him still showing traits of it every so often.

** Tomato Sandwich is the series' prime example. Between getting shut out by his beloved big brother, his attempts to have Cheese and his friends get to know each other backfiring, the guilt and grief over Cheese running away after [[spoiler:the accordion incident]], his so-called friends mocking him for being sensitive (due to fully justified grief) and his BigBrotherWorship, on and off depression and anxiety, his mother nagging him to the point of bordering emotional abuse, feuding with Cheese after his newly-earned cutie mark is insulted, losing new friends within weeks of gaining them, and getting severely humiliated and his future career sabotaged by his crush, it's no wonder that Tommy's so grumpy throughout the series. He's even implied to have attempted suicide as a teenager.
*** He's also made to feel like ''all'' of it is ''his'' fault (when only a few of those incidents are). He outright says in ''Brother Bothers'' that it's better for him to be a killjoy than a screw-up. His mother doesn't allow him to have fun [[spoiler:because he possesses the same party pony abilities that Cheese does, but doesn't have much control over them]], and she fears that he's a little too dangerous if he runs wild. He's forced to live out his talent in ''her'' way, which ultimately kills his joy in it.

He was traumatized by the incident in Las Pegasus, to the point of having nightmares and flashbacks and [[spoiler:had his memories of the event removed because he was convinced it would eventually ruin his ability to spread joy]], only for that to cause more problems such as the obvious memory problems, frequent headaches, sleepiness, irritability, hallucinations, and [[spoiler:tricked into giving up even more memories, which makes the problems worse]]. The only reason he's even able to function is because he has medicine on hand to keep most of his symptoms under control.
