* ToughActToFollow: Coming off [[WesternAnimation/TomAndJerryTales the 2006 series]] which was well-received, the 2014 series isn't as well-received due to having the same problems that hindered previous ''Tom and Jerry'' series starting with the Gene Deitch era and onward (shorts dragging on too long, the limited animation, the limited comedic violence [[note]] this one started moreso in the Chuck Jones era as the Gene Deitch shorts might've been more violent than the Hanna-Barbera shorts [[/note]], and so on). Season 2 and onwards seem to have fixed some of these issues however, most notably the shift in Animation and art and the 7 minute length of episodes.

Authors Saving Throw is now a Trivia trope requiring Word Of God. Switching edit to a trope more fitting what is being detailed.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** While it’s a faithful franchise update in many ways, "The Tom and Jerry Show" bucks several of the tropes and formulas that have been a part of the Tom and Jerry franchise for decades, which fans were starting to find annoying. Starting with the first episode, Tom is established as [[AdaptationalBadass having more of a backbone]], so the frenemy dynamic between Tom, Jerry and Spike and the power imbalance between them is less straightforward and one-sided than it usually is: sometimes Tom scores a win over Jerry and Spike, sometimes Tom gives it as good as he gets when it comes to Spike's beatings. Jerry has also been on the receiving end of many karmic beatdowns throughout the show - whether they’re from Tom or Spike or someone else he screwed over - instead of managing to let Tom take the fall for him entirely, which makes him less of a KarmaHoudini than he has been in previous iterations.
** To solve complaints about the LimitedAnimation, season 2 and every season afterwards adds outlines to the characters, amongst other tweaks, to make them better resemble the original MGM shorts.
** The series format was changed from [[TwoShorts two 11-minute shorts]] to [[ThreeShorts three 7-minute shorts]] to remedy complaints about episodes [[{{Padding}} dragging on too long]].

** Even despite [[AdaptationalJerkass being more hostile to Tom here,]] you can't help but feel sorry for Spike in the first episode. His reward for trying to protect Jerry from Tom? [[DownerEnding Get into more trouble thanks to Tom.]]
** All three of the main trio get this in "Smitten with the Kitten" as it's clear that all of them miss Buttons when Ginger takes her away to her new home. Not helped is that we then see everyone saddened by Buttons leaving. Luckily turns into a much happier moment when it's revealed that Buttons is just next door so the trio can see her as much as they want.
** One short has Jerry trying (and failing) to get Tom back after Tom goes to hang out with Butch, Spike and a new hip cat that just moved in. Jerry then sighs sadly as he looks back onto the chases he had with the cat. It's clear he misses him. [[NightmareFuel And then he goes to sleep]].
** Most of "Un-Welcome Home" is this for Tom. It starts when Tom only gets blamed by [[KickTheDog Ginger for eating a pie which was Jerry's doing, she even mentions about how she should've gotten a goldfish]]. And that's just the start as when Tom goes to see his original family, (before Rick and Ginger got him) they aren't much better. Special note goes to the implication that his {{Jerkass}} brother [[BigBrotherBully abused him since he was little]]. Oh, and his mother [[DisproportionateRetribution kicks him out after she thinks he ate a pie intended to be for dessert]].[[note]]Actually, it was his brother.[[/note]] [[SarcasmMode Great family!]] And it's even worse considering [[EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas he loves his parents]]. And the ending? After Jerry points out to Tom that Rick and Ginger put up "LOST CAT" posters for him, he decides to return to them. While Tom is clearly happy with his decision, the two still aren't much better than his family when you think about it.
** Actually anytime Tom is yelled at or abused by Jerry, a owner or a third party when he didn't deserve it. Talking about all of them would would make walls of text so let's talk about some of the [[SarcasmMode highlights.]]
** One short has Tom accidentally breaking a part of the house after Spike trips the cat. Feeling bad, he and Jerry try to fix thing only to [[FromBadToWorse break more things.]] And when Rick returns, he chases Tom into the sunset while blaming him for all of the chaos. Yes Tom did make things worse but he was trying to fix it up for Rick's mother. Not helped is that Tom did feel remorse and that Spike was the one who started it by tripping Tom.
** Another short has Tom as a butler doing his duties when Jerry discovers a small plane belonging to the Duke and while the mouse is causing chaos with it, Tom and Cates have to get it back. It goes badly after Tom accidentally destroys the plane and Cates basically exiles him. You can see the clear look of sadness on Tom's face when he's forced out of his home. The only good thing is that after Jerry discovers more [[HereWeGoAgain vehicles in the same place]], [[OffScreenKarma Cates will likely have no one left to help him when Jerry decides to race around the castle.]]
** So one day, Ginger has Tom to go outside and share the backyard. Naturally Spike isn't happy and forces the cat to a really small part of the yard and torments the cat. [[HilarityEnsues After much fighting,]] a storm hits and Tom and Spike's doghouse are swept up. And Tom's reward? [[KickTheDog Spike kicks the cat into a birdhouse blaming him for breaking his house which he didn't]]. [[PlayedForLaughs It's meant to be funny]] but it just feels bitter after watching Spike torment Tom throughout the short.
** Tom is forced to go through hell and back in ''When you Leash Expect it'' as he is dragged onto going outside and getting chased by dogs at one point. And when he gets back, Ginger snaps at the clearly tired cat to get up and get Jerry. And why did Ginger drag him outside? Because he was napping like all cats do.
** Spike again gets one when he believes no one remembered his birthday. Luckily, Tom and Jerry decide to give him a party which then turns into a competition between the duo.

* Narm: There is a common section in the show where Tom and Jerry work together as detectives… Yes, a job that primarily requires the workers to ''talk,'' something that the duo typically don’t do, making the mini- series especially awkward. This is only heightened further by there always being a narrator to speak in their stead, having to talk of the situation and characters’ thoughts instead of letting the duo do so by themselves.

* Narm: There is a common section in the show where Tom and Jerry work together as detectives… Yes, a job that primarily requires the workers to ''talk,'' something that the duo typically don’t do, making the mini- series especially awkward. This is only heightened further by there always being a narrator to speak in their stead, having to talk of the situation and characters’ thoughts instead of letting them do so by themselves.

** Another short has Tom as a butler doing his duties when Jerry discovers a small plane belonging to the Duke and while the mouse is causing chaos with with it, Tom and Cates have to get it back. It goes badly after Tom accidentally destroys the plane and Cates basically exiles him. You can see the clear look of sadness on Tom's face when he's forced out of his home. The only good thing is that after Jerry discovers more [[HereWeGoAgain vehicles in the same place,]] [[OffScreenKarma Cates will likely have no one left to help him when Jerry decides to race around the castle.]]

Feeling bad, he and Jerry try to fix thing only to [[FromBadToWorse break more things.]] And when Rick returns, he chases Tom into the sunset while blaming him for all of the chaos/chaos. Yes Tom did make things worse but he was trying to fix it up for Rick's mother. Not helped is that Tom did feel remorse and that Spike was the one who started it by tripping Tom.

Luckily, Tom and Jerry decide to give him a party which then turns into a completion between the duo.

** All three of the main trio get this in ''Smitten with the Kitten'' as it's clear that all of them miss Buttons when Ginger takes her away to her new home.
