* IronWoobie: Homer really goes the extra mile to win back Lisa's affection. He splurges money he doesn't have on a pony, then when he finds out it's an ongoing investment he takes a second job at the Kwik-E-Mart, leaving him severely sleep-deprived. Homer fully intended to keep this up for as long as Princess lived without letting Lisa know he was working himself to death. Bart picking on Homer at work when he was too mentally drained to stick up for himself emphasizes his status further.

** In the baby tape, Lisa can be heard saying "Da-da", only for Homer to ignore her while clashing with Bart. It is revealed in "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS4E10LisasFirstWord Lisa's First Word]]" that Homer craved his children calling him by Daddy, only for them to always refer to him as "Homer" as infants. Even worse since it's this clip that finally breaks Homer and leaves him in tears from guilt.

* HilariousInHindsight: The HarsherInHindsight example above aside, pretty much ''all'' the "unlikely" circumstances Marge imagines holding Homer up ''do'' happen throughout the show.

* {{Padding}}: The second scene where Lisa calls Homer at work can be completely exorcised with nothing of value lost. It consists of nothing but a standard establishing shot of the power plant, recycled animation of Homer sleeping and answering the phone from the beginning of the episode, and recycled footage from "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS2E16BartsDogGetsAnF Bart's Dog Get an F]]" (especially damning in that, in the latter, [[StockFootageFailure Lisa has the mumps and Homer is wearing his crappy "Homer Simpson All-Star" sneakers]]).

** A perfect encapsulation of the family's {{Flanderization}}: In this episode Homer is willing to work himself half to death so Lisa can have her pony (because he's trying to make amends for not being there for Lisa). In "The President Wore Pearls", Homer shoots down all of Lisa's dreams, even going to a better school, in a ''very'' angry and loud fashion, because he's too damn lazy to want to support her in any way, even so much as driving an additional half an hour to drop her off -- not to mention episodes where Lisa butts heads with her parents because they can't see eye to eye went on the rise in the meanwhile.
