* CriticalDissonance: The majority of critical reception for the episode was mixed to negative. Most notably, Dennis Perkins of ''The A.V. Club'' utterly hated the episode and described its ending scene as "a cheap gambit to close out a truly disappointing episode (and season) with unmerited weight." In contrast, audiences and fans at the time generally enjoyed the episode, calling it one of the best out of the entire series and with special praise being given to the ''Series/SixFeetUnder'' SeriesFinale parody at the end of the episode. (The positive reception of the episode, or at least its final segment, has seemed to fade, though, as the Series/SixFeetUnder reference is lost on a lot of younger viewers, who just see the deaths of these characters as needlessly cruel.)

Since the Steamed Hams-induced Newbie Boom of Simpsons fans, a whole new generation has emerged that doesn’t find "Flander’s Ladder" as amazing as it once was. It’s too cruel and too meta for many fans to like it, especially younger fans who are used to the softness of the modern and Golden Age episodes and are alienated by the cynicism of the Dark Age, and the Six Feet Under parody is lost on a lot of younger fans who haven’t even heard of the show (it’s a specifically early-2000s cultural artifact) and will just see it as needlessly cruel and over-the-top, especially in the way it treats fan-favorite characters like Lisa, Principal Skinner, Ned Flanders, and Waylon Smithers.

* HilariousInHindsight: Dr. Hibbert considers Bart being in a coma to be nothing to worry about, claiming he's had "more comas than he's had hot breakfasts." It kind of seems like a HandWave to keep the family from seeming too callous as they head off to grab a bite to eat and leave him alone with Lisa, until the following season's premiere when it immediately happens ''again''.

** One of the criticisms given to previous episodes set in the future have been how Bart is invariably a loser while Lisa is incredibly successful, which seems to be falling yet again into the series' issues regarding positive discrimination. Here, Bart is shown to have become the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court as previously mentioned in "Itchy and Scratchy: The Movie", showing that his future isn't ''as'' bleak as it may seem.
** Some consider this episode a rightful call out over the somewhat mean spirited way Maude was KilledOffForReal in "Alone Again Natura-Diddly", in particular making Homer an IdiotHoudini who practically set up the whole thing.

Special mention must be given to Smithers being DrivenToSuicide upon realizing that his TragicDream regarding his love for Mr. Burns is completely futile.
