Too much of a stretch, there is zero connection between those works other than the ocean setting.

* HilariousInHindsight: The film features a Sia song in the end credits. The week before its release, another [[WesternAnimation/FindingDory ocean-themed movie]] also featured a song by the singer. On top of that, it wasn't [[Film/TheNeonDemon the only movie]] that came out ''the same weekend'' that ended with a Sia song.

Incorrect indentation. Misuse (Doesn't present the two sides of the conflict, so it comes across as complaining).

** There are some - even those who otherwise enjoy the film - who feel that another film about a killer shark is unnecessary and continues to paint great white sharks in a bad light.

* BrokenBase: The subplot of Nancy having conflict with her father from dropping out of medical school. Some find it works, while others find it forced and tacked on. [[spoiler: The final scene between them thus is split between those who find it a Heartwarming Moment or TastesLikeDiabetes]].

* FridgeBrilliance: When retrieving the helmet with the camera, Nancy finds one of the shark's shed teeth, which she tucks into her wetsuit. [[ChekhovsGun Not only does it prove a useful tool later]], but many coastal and island traditions hold that wearing a shark tooth while in the ocean will protect one from a shark attack. The tooth doesn't protect Nancy from being ''attacked'', but she does survive. . . and the period while she has the tooth on her person is the farthest the shark is from actually getting her while she's in the water.

* NightmareFuel: Comes with the territory.
** The shark. Twenty-one feet of anger and terror, it seems to have it out for Nancy. Anyone else who ventures into the water is viciously attacked and torn apart.
** Remember all those Discovery Channel specials when sharks breach out the water to catch a seal? Well, it happens here, this time with one of Nancy's would-be rescuers.
** [[spoiler: The death of the drunken man. He wades into the water to collect Nancy's surfboard and as he's paddling to shore, he's pulled underwater. We cut to a reaction shot of Nancy as [[NothingIsScarier she watches the shark mauling the man.]]]]
** For a split second, there is a hope spot, as we cut to [[spoiler: the drunk crawling up shore. And then we see that he's crawling away and [[HalfTheManHeUsedToBe leaving his severed lower torso]] ''[[HalfTheManHeUsedToBe behind]]'']].
** The scene in which Nancy is trying to get the Go-pro helmet from the water. She turns in time to see the shark's massive jaws lurch out the water at her.
** [[spoiler: Nancy having to navigate through the jellyfish as a sort of shield from the shark. During this scene, their tentacles touch her several times.]]
** The [[spoiler: corpse of the dead whale]] looks pretty creepy in general.
** In the movie, [[spoiler: Nancy climbs onto the dead whale to take refuge from the shark. A few minutes later, and the shark slams into the underside of the dead whale to knock Nancy off. Not only does this show the shark is ''strong'' enough to do something like that, but this also shows it's '''''intelligent''''' enough to do something like that.]]
