* TearJerker: Seeing Katharina being viciously bullied by a scandal-obsessed tabloid media to the point that she loses most of her friends and ultimately [[spoiler:lashes out against the man who ruined her life and his accomplice]] can be pretty upsetting for many readers. Even more so in the film adaptation, thanks to Angela Winkler's heartrending performance. It doesn't help either that this sort of thing often happens in RealLife.

Trope being dewicked.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: Journalists have a responsibility to report events fairly and ethically, and failure to do so can lead to tragedy, as it did in Katharina's case. Considering how often people have seen their lives ruined by this kind of irresponsible reporting in real life, that's a pretty heavy anvil.

* ValuesResonance: In interviews for the 2003 Criterion Collection DVD release of the film, director Volker Schlöndorff and other crew members argued for the film's continued relevance today, drawing an analogy between the political climate of panic over terrorism in 1970s West Germany and the post-September 11, 2001 situation in the U.S. where unsubstantiated media hype was used to launch the invasion of Iraq.
