* EstablishingCharacterMoment: When Moonee enters her and Halley's room for the first time, Halley is seen smoking weed in her room, despite the motel's "no smoking" policy. This establishes Halley as an irresponsible and rebellious woman.

* AngstWhatAngst: Deliberately averted. One of the major themes of the film is capturing the innocence of childhood by showing how the main child cast is mostly unfazed by the things happening around them. The only times when they show any angst are when they know something in their life is about to change for good, such as [[spoiler:Scooty being forced not to see Moonee anymore and Moonee being taken away from her mother]].

* {{Narm}}: Some have found Moonee's crying at the end somewhat off-putting.

* TheWoobie: Poor little Moonee.

* {{Foil}}: Halley to Ashley. Both are rebellious single mothers living in a run-down, crappy motel, but there are key differences between the two. While Halley is unable keep a job, often has to do shady things in order to pay the rent, lets Moonee do whatever she wants (which often has horrible results) and throws profane tantrums when something doesn't go her way, Ashley has an actual job at a diner, actually tries to parent Scooty, and is more mature in her relationships.

* JerkassWoobie: Halley is rude, [[LadySwearsALot foul-mouthed]], and incredibly immature, but it's obvious she didn't ask to live in a rundown motel raising a little girl all on her own.

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: A lot of viewers find Halley to be this. Sure, it’s obvious she’s supposed to be a JerkassWoobie considering her living conditions, but it doesn’t help that she’s rude, obnoxious, and tends to only make things worse for her and Moonee. The fact she [[spoiler: physically assaults Ashley]] near the end is [[MoralEventHorizon the final nail in the coffin]].

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: A lot of viewers find Halley to be this. Sure, it’s obvious she’s supposed to be a JerkassWoobie considering her living conditions, but it doesn’t help that she’s rude, obnoxious, and tends to only make things worse. The fact she [[spoiler: physically assaults Ashley]] near the end is [[MoralEventHorizon the final nail in the coffin]].

* MoralEventHorizon: Halley finally crosses this when she beats Ashley in front of her own son.

* AwardSnub: While Creator/WillemDafoe did receive a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, the film failed to get any other nominations at the [[UsefulNotes/AcademyAward Academy Awards]] despite its critical acclaim and the fact that it was long viewed as being one of the top potential front-runners for the ceremony. It has been theorized by some that its snubbing was because of Andrew Duncan, one of the film's producers, being accused of sexual harassment, as well as the fact that Creator/{{A24}} decided to dedicate more effort and money into campaigning for ''Film/LadyBird'' than this film.
