How much of it is just 1920s medicine and how much of it buys into the (still pervasive) narrative of "trans = surgery" can be argued for days. But some modern transgender viewers didn't like that there was an undue emphasis on the genital surgery, or that said surgery was necessary to make Lili a "full and proper" woman. There are arguments that continuing the trans = surgery misconception does more harm than good.

Again, it's not that no trans person has ever "opened the floodgates" by cross-dressing (with respect to their assigned gender), but the ways a person comes to realize they are trans are far more diverse than a single film would allow. Takeaway: Please, for the love of dog, do not ask the next trans woman you meet if she's like the Danish Girl.
