* SequelDifficultySpike: It's much more difficult than the first game, and more difficult than all subsequent games as well. This is attributed to the game being under the impression that you've played and mastered the first Mario game. As such, this game features more enemies to deal with at once, introduces new obstacles such as the poison mushrooms, and has overall more deceptive level designs that border on trial and error.

** 8-2 is much shorter and easier than the levels before and after it, with the only tricky part being a bounce off a Paratroopa to reveal a beanstalk, which leads to the exit.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: While nobody thinks this game is easy, younger gamers who discover or play this game decades after its release have stated they don't get this game's infamous reputation as "the first game, but harder", or why Mario fans complain of its difficulty, especially since the advent of VideoGame/SuperMarioMaker. It helps that much of the difficulty can be alleviated by save slots and other modern day emulation features offered through the 3DS and Wii U Virtual Consoles and Nintendo Switch Online (which is likely how most younger players are likely to access the game today).

** After the insanely grueling 7-2, the game treats you to 7-3, one of the easier levels in the game, which has very few enemies and only consists of super springs and reasonably big platforms, with just enough time for you to figure out where to land. It's tricky, but not hair pulling in difficulty. The same cannot be said for its later equivalent, C-3, which adds a single Lakitu just to make your life miserable.

There is no citation that points to the similarity being the number one reason. All of the quotes that Howard Philips has given have explicitly called out the difficulty and not the similarity.

* ItsTheSameNowItSucks: Wasn't just a fan reaction. The #1 reason Nintendo decided not to export the Famicom version to the US was that they didn't think such an obvious MissionPackSequel would sell well in the States (note that simply being NintendoHard didn't stop them from exporting any other games back then).

* AnticlimaxBoss: As if to throw the player a bone for the game's infuriating difficulty, the Bowser fights are relatively unchanged from the first game. 8-4 adds two Bowsers to the mix (the first one is on a long floor with no ax rather than a bridge, is considered fake, and is a darker color, being the same shade as Koopa Troopas in castle levels), but you can skip the first one, and the game gives you at least two chances to get a secret mushroom or fire flower beforehand (if you can find them and keep them). Just watch out for the warp pipe pit with Invisible blocks prior to the fake Bowser (this pipe will send you back as far as you can go in the level) and the lava pit+piranha plant combo (plus a lone buzzy beetle) preceding the real Bowser.

** In the original FDS version, the Bowsers in worlds A through D don't throw hammers. All-Stars would correct this and make them the fearsome hammer throwing kind.

Added DiffLines:

** D-4 has a few tricky jumps but is nowhere near as hard as 8-4, especially since there's no maze elements in the level. Heck there's even a bonus level interlude, and you can skip the first Bowser encounter without much trouble.

* SequelDifficultyDrop: The All-Stars version makes slight adjustments to make this game much easier and bearable than its 8-bit counterpart. The game was included with a save feature, and the ability to continue from any stage you want, instead of at the beginning of every world to compensate for the insane difficulty. You also do not have to beat the game eight times to access Worlds A through D, you only need to beat it once. The levels themselves are still nearly as nasty as they've ever been, though, with the main differences here being the removal of some (though not all) invisible blocks that frequently caused unintentional player deaths, plus some added power-ups.

* SophomoreSlump: As a sequel to the original game, The Lost Levels is too much of a difficulty spike to be considered a worthy successor. Too much focus was put on making the game hard instead of being innovative, or at least fixing the flaws the original game had. Despite this, VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3 is often considered the best in the original trilogy, and one of the greatest 2D platformers of all time.

They were both huge factors in it. One doesn't outweigh the other. Regardless if you say it was because it was too similar or it was too hard, you're going to be right on both accounts. Howard Philips was well aware of the "Nintendo Hard" reputation too, but he felt even this game went too far with it, thus kinda negating all the reasoning stated in Misblamed.

* ItsHardSoItSucks: Part A major reason of why the game wasn't exported.exported. Then-Nintendo of America spokesman Howard Philips recalled that, while they certainly had exported NintendoHard games before, this one cranked it up just a little too high, paying note to the game frequently asking the player to take leaps of faith that almost always brought about death. Even Miyamoto himself disliked the SequelDifficultySpike. The other reason is that...

* MisBlamed: It's widely and mistakenly thought that Nintendo of America refused to release the game due to the belief that Western players couldn't "handle" its high difficulty; by that same token, many other NES games shouldn't have made the cut (after all, the trope is called Nintendo Hard). The real reason was to avoid the pitfalls that caused the videogame market to bottom out in 1983, one of which was creating sequels by simply tweaking an existing game and slapping a "2" on the end. The game's difficulty wasn't exactly appreciated by Japanese audiences, either, who generally prefer gaming for the sake of leisure rather than for an extreme challenge; the number of Japanese games made harder for export positively dwarfs the inverse.
