* BrokenAesop: B'Elanna is openly racist toward a holographic Cardassian, declaring that "as far as I'm concerned, they're all cold-blooded killers". The Doctor calls her out on this, pointing out that she can't condemn someone based on his species, and that this person is trying to save her life. Then the whole thing is swiftly subverted when it turns out that the man the program was based on ''was'' a cold-blooded killer and a war criminal, and the whole focus of the episode pivots to medical ethics. Notable, because ''Star Trek'' is usually clear in it's condemnations of racial prejudice. A character making assumptions based on someone's species, and turning out to be right, is pretty uncommon.

* HarsherInHindsight: Tom justifies using Moset's methods to take the creature off B'Elanna, saying "We're in the middle of the Delta Quadrant. Who would know?". This gets uncomfortable when we get to "Equinox" in the end of the season, and we discover what that eponymous crew has done throughout their time in the Delta Quadrant.
