Misuse, to quote another user, it’s for “ "for ignored characters with good potential who never receive the spotlight", not for complaining that a certain character was not used in a way fans would have liked.”

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Dukat secretly working with the crew of ''Deep Space Nine'' to investigate weapons smuggling and secret militia organizations? Sounds like maybe Garak could have some information or advice to contribute, or even just sympathize with Dukat being abandoned by Central Command. But Garak isn't even mentioned.

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: While the Cardassians are hardly innocent, the Maquis don't come off very well overall. Even setting aside their origin in "Preemptive Strike" (i.e. them choosing to stay under the Cardassian government and renounce Federation ship for the sake of their world and homes rather than their lives and safety), in both episodes of the two-parter we see plenty of terrorist actions the Maquis take while everything the Cardassians do is offscreen, and most of it doesn't justify war or murder. It somehow manages to come across both as more petty and more harsh than the writers probably intended, even if they were trying to make a more complicated BlackAndGrayMorality situation.

** Garak's absence and lack of mention can arguably be justified in-story given Garak ''had'' torpedoed Dukat's scheme earlier that Season in "Cardassians" and left him humiliated. Plus, as we later learn in Season Three, Dukat ''hates'' Garak and [[spoiler: holds him responsible for his father's death]].) So even if Garak had intel or tapped his sources, Dukat would likely have rather slit his own wrists than to accept help from the 'plain, simple tailor'.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: In Ira Behr's original draft, Sisko ''did'' kill Hudson during the final battle. Behr was vetoed by Michael Piller, who felt the show could use Hudson for future Maquis episodes and didn't want to kill off another recurring character (as had been the case with Li Nalas in "The Siege"). Upon viewing the episode dailies, however, Piller conceded Behr was right and that Hudson ''should'' have died (but it was too late to change it). [[spoiler: Behr ultimately got to kill off Hudson several Seasons later (albeit off-screen) during "Blaze of Glory"]].

Cut trope and subject to cleanup.

* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: Sometimes diplomacy just don't work and your enemy won't listen to reason, and force may be necessary to diffuse the situation.
