Misuse (and complaining in the second bullet point)

* MisaimedMarketing:
** The source material, ''WesternAnimation/SpiritStallionOfTheCimarron'', was about the effects of colonization on nature and indigenous people. Meanwhile, ''Spirit Riding Free'' and ''Spirit Untamed'' reduce ''Spirit'' to a LighterAndSofter PonyTale that completely glazes over how the setting (a recently settled town in the frontier) and characters (the protagonist is of mixed race but is raised by her Caucasian parent; there are no indigenous characters save for a one-off character) are the way they are because of colonization.
** Not to mention the only connection to the original film is that the titular horse, who is apparently the original Spirit's ''son'' according to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSvoLSFOgoo one of the YouTube exclusive shorts]], has a near-identical character design to Spirit. Considering ''Spirit Riding Free'' and ''Spirit Untamed'' are aimed at a generation that didn't grow up with the original movie, it's a rather bizarre and insulting choice for a tie-in and would have made more sense for the franchise to be an original IP.

Renamed one trope.

* TheyChangedItSoItSucks: The beloved ''WesternAnimation/SpiritStallionOfTheCimarron'' being turned into a generic [[PonyTale "girl and her horse"]] story for a MerchandiseDriven SpinOff and missing how the original film's message was about freedom and nature. The trailer for ''WesternAnimation/SpiritUntamed'' immediately revived the backlash -- in addition to the aforementioned offenses, it was also criticized over its LimitedAnimation (an improvement on the series but well below the usual standards for [=DreamWorks=]) and accused of erasing the original film’s indigenous focus.
