Face Of The Band is being cut per TRS. "Arguably, to some extent" = Weasel Words = Likely shoehorn.

* FaceOfTheBand: Arguably Robert Wyatt to some extent, primarily because he had a fairly large number of lead vocals and had a reasonably successful solo career (at least by progressive rock standards) after leaving the band. However, a large number of other well-known musicians have also been in the band throughout the years, but probably aren't as consistently associated with Soft Machine. The best known musician ever to be in the group is actually a young (at the time) guitarist named Andy Summers, who later had a band you may have heard of called Music/ThePolice. However, he was in Soft Machine for less than a year and never recorded anything with them, so his tenure with them is usually forgotten. Kevin Ayers and Daevid Allen also are fairly well known, the latter primarily for his band Gong; however, Allen had also left before the first album was recorded, and Ayers left shortly afterward. Jazz fusion guitarist Music/AllanHoldsworth was also in the band for a couple of years and showed up on ''Bundles''. The best known member after Wyatt's departure was probably Hugh Hopper, who left after ''Six'', or Mike Ratledge, who left after ''Bundles''. Did we mention this is a RevolvingDoorBand?

* NightmareFuel:
** "Facelift" starts out mellow, with some bleeping electronic noises. Then distorted bass and organ come in and boy, this is the stuff nightmares are made of.
** The last few minutes on "Moon in June" are an eerie drone on top of which free jazz violinist Rab Spall plays some dissonant violin, and Robert Wyatt mumbles a couple of melodies from Kevin Ayers' songs, buried somewhere in the mix. The effect is unsettling, to say the least.
** "Fletcher's Blemish" on Fourth is as scary as free jazz gets.
** Six's "1983" is Hugh Hopper's swan song with the band and as such, it sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the album. It consists of eerie piano, distorted bass and electronic noises for about eight minutes.

* SeasonalRot: There is much arguing over whether it begins with Fourth and its abandonment of vocals of any kind, or Robert Wyatt's departure on Fifth.
* TheScrappy: Karl Jenkins is seen as this by some fans since he took over somewhere between Six and Seven, and proceeded to transform Soft Machine into an increasingly bland, uninspired jazz-rock band.
* SignatureSong: "Esther's Nosejob", "Moon in June", "Out-Bloody-Rageous".
