Or is he a WellIntentionedExtremist, motivated by a genuine desire to bring peace to his people? Also just how much of the events were AllAccordingToPlan, and how much was just Toranaga playing XanatosSpeedChess?

* MagnificentBastard: Lord Yoshii Toranaga is a brilliant, ever-composed schemer who bends all of Japan to his will through cunning, charm and sheer determination. Once a loyal retainer to the ''taikō'', Toranaga sensed the coming treachery of his fellow Regents and acted accordingly, taking Lady Ochiba and her son the heir hostage as "guests" to stall the Regents' coup. Escaping the Regents' immediate grasp with a deceitful ploy, Toranaga uses spies and his knowledge of the Regents' allies to spread dissension amidst his foes. Though he initially planned for war, Toranaga wastes little time in concocting a more subtle method of victory when his army is lost in a freak accident. Toranaga uses the friendship of Mariko and Lady Ochiba to drive a wedge between Ochiba and the Regents, having Mariko sacrifice her life to show the Regents for the cruel tyrants they are so that Ochiba will publicly turn against them. Without the backing of Ochiba, the Regents fall to Toranaga in short order, and Toranaga makes his move to begin taking power in Japan. Exposing and eliminating all threats to him with ease while regularly using Englishman John Blackthorne as a tool against his enemies, Toranaga succeeds in his goal to become the titular Shōgun, unmoved by the many lives it cost.

* HilariousInHindsight: Early in his career, Creator/HiroyukiSanada portrayed the first Muromachi-era Shōgun Ashikaga Takauji in the 1991 {{Creator/NHK}} Taiga Drama ''Taiheiki''. Here he plays the facsimile to the founder of the Edo Shōgunate, UsefulNotes/TokugawaIeyasu, whose government is widely seen by historians as ''the'' SuperiorSuccessor for ending the UsefulNotes/SengokuPeriod.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Yabushige. Him being willing to do literally anything to come out of his predicament alive (groveling, flip-flopping, backstabbing and trying to play both sides among other things) and ultimately being loyal to nobody but himself can be seen as him being a DirtyCoward... or (from a Western perspective that might consider the traditional Japanese code of honor as being tantamount to BlueAndOrangeMorality) simply as being the OnlySaneMan with an understandable instinct of self-preservation who is trapped in a situation that has a 95% likelihood of ending with his death (either in battle or by Seppuku).

Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales is when a demographic that's expected to hate or be offended by a work loves it instead. Since that's not the intention of this work, it's this trope instead.

* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: In sheer contrast to the original 1980 miniseries, the Japanese audience and showbiz industry seems to have backed it fully, with both [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dgun_(2024_miniseries)#Reception_in_Japan viewers rating it highly]], reviewers and longtime {{Jidaigeki}} actors (like Ken Matsudaira, noted protagonist of ''Series/AbarenboShogun'') and even Creator/HideoKojima singing its praises. It does help that unlike the 1980 miniseries, Sanada and a host of Japanese producers and creatives were involved throughout the process [[ShownTheirWork to guarantee standards and accuracy]].

** While the show is largely heteronormative when it comes to sexual texts (the main three sex scenes so far have been of a man and a woman), there are a number of viewers who saw Blackthorne teaching Toranaga how to swim being quite homoerotic. This is much helped by Creator/CosmoJarvis being practically nude, SilverFox Creator/HiroyukiSanada in a white hakama (essentially his underwear) and the whole thing being charged with the power dynamics between the two men.
** TheReveal that Mariko and Lady Ochiba / Princess Ruri [[WeUsedToBeFriends were once childhood playmates and friends up until Mariko's marriage]] falls here as well. Both tried to keep their friendship even as their fathers (Akechi and Kuroda) become estranged, plus Ruri tried to comfort Mariko despite her dissatisfaction with Buntaro. A lot of comparisons were even drawn to the other higher-profile female royal rivalry of 21st century television: Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower of ''Series/HouseOfTheDragon''.
