* TierInducedScrappy: Most of the runners you're given to help you in ''Dragonfall'' and ''Hong Kong'' are good, but not great, at their designated task. Then there's [=Is0bel=], who CantCatchUp as the game goes on. Her grenade launcher excels in the base campaign, especially with upgrades, but its base damage never increases and cyberware-upgraded enemies in ''Shadows'' might [[GrenadeHotPotato throw them back]]. Her custom deck also struggles later on due to its lower damage and AP compared to the Fairlight Excalibur, and it's even worse if you decided to upgrade her grenade launcher since you miss out on several very helpful decking upgrades. While you can replace her guns you can't replace her deck since it's gold-locked to her character sheet. The fact she's your only decker (unless you're playing one) is a large part of what makes Prosperity Tower, a late-game Matrix-heavy MarathonLevel, ThatOneLevel.

* AluminumChristmasTrees: Gobbet's name [[HisNameReallyIsBarkeep really is Gobbet]]. When asked about her name, Gobbet claims that in Hong Kong, people love giving their children "unique" English names to make them stand out even though (as in her own mother's case) they might not fully understand what said names mean. This is an [[https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2012/10/hong-kong-loves-weird-english-names/263103/ less far-fetched]] than it might sound.actual phenomenon]] in real-life Hong Kong.

Per TRS, this is YMMV

Added DiffLines:

* DifficultySpike:
** The raid on Telestrian's headquarters in ''The Dead Man's Switch'' is a lot harder than previous stages. Among the problems is that the enemies can and will flank you by spawning from different entrances, there are a lot more of them than you're used to dealing with, and there are mandatory decking sequences which spawn heavy guards that can hit five times in one attack just to capitalize on your lack of manpower. Justified in that you ''are'' hitting an office of a major MegaCorp, something that would not be done unless you are [[GodzillaThreshold just that desperate]].
** The ''Shadows of Hong Kong'' bonus campaign is notably harder than the original campaign. You're regularly pitted against an overwhelming number of heavily-armed enemies from multiple angles, they use new equipment that does a lot of damage, and they use cyberware that only you could access in the previous campaign, making it the most dangerous ''Shadowrun Returns'' story yet.

Please use the Magnificent Bastard cleanup thread to propose characters before writing their entries. Magnificent Bastard entries not approved by the thread will be deleted.

* MagnificentBastard: Luca Duerr in ''Dragonfall'', if the player completes all the tasks assigned by him. [[spoiler: He manages to rise from mid-level management within the Lodge to become one of its agents who have global reach. All it took him was some nuyen.]]
** Kindly Cheng in ''Hong Kong''. In the main campaign, [[spoiler: she takes over her superior's position and ruins Josephine Tsang, thanks to the player's help.]] In ''Shadows'', [[spoiler: she then convinces the player to stick with her, allowing her to carve out new territory in Seattle after losing Hong Kong]].

* HilariousInHindsight: The Humanis sidequest in ''Dragonfall'' features villains with the exact same plan as in a certain Disney movie, [[spoiler:''WesternAnimation/{{Zootopia}}'']]. Imagine a cyberpunk version of that!

** In ''Hong Kong'', the Decking was changed significantly, but still has issues. It turns into a Real-Time Third-Person Stealth game for most of it, requiring careful timing and quick thinking, as opposed to the more strategic Meat-Space action, not to mention the Black IC that does Meat Space HP Damage to your Decker, instead of the IP damage normally done by Matrix programs.

(In fairness, this is much more accurate to the tabletop source.)

Added DiffLines:

** An melee adept can safely ignore most of the melee weapon or unarmed skills once they reach chi-casting level 4, which grants them a double attack with guaranteed crits. Although this move costs 2 AP, it can be balanced out with a shaman's haste spell. When coupled with a katana, this move ensures that almost every enemy you attack will be stunned even if only one hit connects.

** ''Dragonfall'', through the mouth of the team and the inhabitants of the Kreuzbazar, may want you to believe Monika held the Kreuzbazar together and was an indispensable leader to run it. But the player who invests time in his new team and workplace might think Monika's management was not as stellar as said. [[spoiler:Her achievements include giving up on Glory to the point she's completely closed to the world when you first meet her, letting a metahuman shelter remain in ruins when little was needed to fix it, and getting a teen hooked on [=BTLs=] to help her deal with her miscarriage.]] It's up to the player to decide if she tried to make the most of a chaotic situation or was a lazy leader overlooking complex issues in order to go for the easy solution or let them sort themselves out.

** APEX. [[spoiler:She can find you anywhere on the net and fry your brain so fast that you can't even jack out. If you don't kill her, you're forever at her mercy, because betraying her ensures that you and anyone you know can ''never'' go near the Matrix again. Your best bet is to pray that the destruction of the wired Matrix 10 years later (which is foreshadowed in Eiger's mission as her target works with Winterfall, the terrorist group that will destroy the Matrix and lead to it's replacement, the Mesh) took care of it, or at least greatly wound it.]]

* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: In ''Dragonfall'', it's plain that siding with powerful groups with morally questionable goals pays. Doing the Lodge's work consistently will result in them sending you a gift consisting of some pretty good items. In ''Loose Ends'', [[spoiler: shooting the target on sight will net you the most Karma and ensure that you leave the building without another fight. Siding with the rigger all the way results in no Karma gain, and a firefight.]]
** ''Shadows Of Hong Kong'' emphasizes the idea that many people are just pawns in the proxy corporate wars between megacorps, e.g. Krait and Qiu are two ladies who are just serving their corporate masters.
