** The Gaia Cancers are all horrifying to look at, but special mention goes to Gertraud, which has a phallic symbol sticking out of one of its mouths.
** We get a rather graphic CG of what happened to the little girl that Ende threw off a skyscraper.
** Georg, Morgan, and Siegbert lean more on the realistic side of NightmareFuel due to their economic and political power, and their willingness to abuse it to make everyone around them miserable. Georg and Siegbert's abusive parenting methods also hit close to home and in real life, it's definitely possible for those with enough influence to get away with it while most of society is unaware of their misdeeds. These kinds of people exist in real life, unlike the Gaia Cancers and Refuse Seraphic Blue, making them scarier in a way.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: This game is constantly in the player's face with its nihilistic characters, but it's trying to convey that a society that promotes abuse, overly cold pragmatism, and treating people like tools can suck all the joy out of life. This causes some (like Er) to sink into depravity and causes others (like Vene) to live half-heartedly.

This causes some (like Er) to sink into depravity and causes others (like Vene) to live half-heartedly. These two show that a sufficiently bad society and parenting can potentially be worse than {{Eldritch Abomination}}s, but the ending shows that people can overcome this, albeit gradually.

** Played with when it comes to Ende, who was ''born'' on the far side of the line as a HumanoidAbomination. * {{Narm}}: As depressing as this game can be, it does have some rather unintentionally hilarious moments.
** While Ende torturing Vene and telling her how he's going to kill her does highlight how truly messed up he is, it's also the point where the writing veers into edgy fanfic territory akin to such works as ''Dipper Goes To Taco Bell'' or ''Sweet Apple Massacre''. See for yourself:
-->'''Ende''': "The stomach that is filled with plenty of chyme... The gall bladder that is packed with bitter juices... The liver that's redolent with a bitter taste... The urinary bladder that's filled with pee... And the intestines that are filled with shit... I shall mix them together and stuff them into your mouth. Heh. You'll then puke them all out, won't you? Buueeeeeegh! On the spur of the moment you'll shit and pee yourself... I'll then mix the puke, shit and pee, and smear them all over your pretty face...! I'll thrust my fingers deep into your mouth! I'll force everything down the depths of your throat! And then you'll puke again! I'll make sure you keep puking until you die of madness!"

-->'''Nixon''': I understand... [[spoiler: The children are beyond salvation. My poor little children... to see you suffering so... [[MercyKill We will quickly put an end to your pain.]]]]
-->'''Ewan''': Are you... sure about this?

** Vene becomes far less pleasant, to the point of snapping at those who question her nihilism, after she regains her memories of both her horrible life at Siegbert's hands and Syria's suffering at Georg's hands. Despite having the role of saving the world, she was indoctrinated into viewing life as suffering and death as mercy, thanks to Siegbert's cat-killing regimen. The two lives she did value, Lake and Ewan, end up performing {{Heroic Sacrifice}}s to save the party, leading to her feeling very nihilistic all the way up to the FinalBoss. Even after their spirits give her enough motivation to activate Gaia's Rebirth, she still continues to struggle with depression and suicide, though she's at least making slow progress.
** Subverted with her evil personality Er because while she shares Vene's painful memories, she fully [[TheMadHatter embraces her darkness]] and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, disqualifying her as a {{Woobie}}.

** Ende and Er's cases are subverted since the former is an EldritchAbomination while the latter is a MadeOfEvil LiteralSplitPersonality, meaning neither are capable of making moral choices. The scary part is that the examples listed below are capable of morality, yet choose to be nearly as depraved as these two.
** If Georg's status as a remorseless and sadistic CorruptCorporateExecutive wasn't enough, he treats his daughter, Syria, as a trophy in a GildedCage and essentially wanted to [[ControlFreak control every detail of her life]]. When she gets pregnant and ruins his "pure" image of her, he abandons her to die in childbirth and has the audacity to continue sending assassins after her lover and son out of spite. Worse yet, he plans on killing Vene to take Syria's spirit, revive her in a clone body, and force her to become his trophy again. His atrocities go beyond his own family, since he convinces the Citizens of the Ground to go to war with Fezzite, knowing that most of them will probably die in the process (especially when he secreted planted a bomb on one of their own ships as a FalseFlagOperation). Eventually, he builds the LAJ mobile fortress with the intention of wiping Fezzite's capital off the map. Worst of all, he knows this war will accomplish nothing but helping Ende with his plan to destroy the world, but he goes through with it anyways for the sake of a power-trip.
** Siegbert Ansbach kills kittens with hammers in order to desensitize Vene and get her to do it too, turning her into an emotionally broken nihilist. Not to mention that his antics end up creating [[spoiler:Er]], who he then hid the existence of because her potential to destroy the world makes his "game" more fun. He also states that even if he didn't have Vene, he would have done the same to Fritz even though he wasn't Seraphic Blue, further subverting any of his claims of being a WellIntentionedExtremist.
** Morgan Douglas is already known to be a power hungry bully willing to torture innocents and screw over his own country if it means being ruler. He also approved of Siegbert's indoctrination of Vene while he was the Chairman of CMGC, making him partially responsible for [[spoiler:Er]]. And like Georg, he's willing to use Lucifers to wage a pointless war despite the fact that the world is already getting screwed by Gaia Cancers. [[spoiler:And the endgame reveals that he sold Neo-Lucifers to Abram to be used to scam members of the Khaos association into thinking the Lucifers were their children, all to fund his plans.]]
