* BrokenBase: The revelation that[[spoiler: Kodya and old Gyrus]] had a relationship in the Room of Swords has split the reader base. Some fans welcome the pairing and are fervent defenders of it while others hate the idea of a [[spoiler:potential gay pairing in the story]]. There are also others on neither side and care more about the backstory and mythology behind the room rather than any of the romantic pairings.
** Ragan is also a contentious character. Some fans find her unnecessarily cruel to Gyrus, Sylvia, and Tori when they aren't much of a threat to the inhabitants of the room. Others find her actions justified considering [[spoiler: old Gyrus wiped out half of the inhabitants of the room and allowed the Shadow Army to take the majority of the swords they acquired]].
