** The release of ''Final 3: Evolved'' as a UsefulNotes/PlayStation5 exclusive was met with mixed reactions from fans. While partially due to miscommunications, among the issues raised is whether the same features and additions would carry over into versions of ''Final 2'' in other platforms.

* DifficultySpike: Stage 4 in the UsefulNotes/GameBoy port is a notable example, since due to stages 4 & 5 having to be stripped out to save space on the cart, it's actually the original stage ''6'', as well as being even harder than the original version of the stage due to even less room to manuever in to avoid the rampaging Dops.

* PolishedPort: While for obvious reasons it can't really be compared to the arcade original, the UsefulNotes/GameBoy port of ''R-Type'' is a ''staggering'' accomplishment of programming by British studio B.I.T.S and programmer Jas Austin simply because it was believed to be straight-up ''impossible.'' While there are obvious graphical and auditory sacrifices and two entire levels (4 and 5) had to be stripped out because of space restrictions, the port still plays with incredible fluidity and is remarkably faithful to the original despite some necessary compromises, and it's arguably one of the finest shoot-'em-ups on the console.

** ''R-Type III'' on UsefulNotes/GameBoyAdvance. According to [[http://vitaflo.com/v11/thoughts/2004_04/when_ports_go_b.html one of the devs]], they had no help from Irem or access to the original source code. They had to rip the assets with a SNES emulator, and recreate the whole game from scratch, under a very tight deadline and near zero budget. The result was a lethal case of HitboxDissonance and ''awful'' music arrangements.

* ThatOneAchievement: Two in particular from ''R-Type Dimensions EX'', both of which have a global completion rate on UsefulNotes/{{Steam}} of only 0.7%[[note]]there are a couple of other co-op achievements with similarly low completion, but that can be attributed to the unpopularity of co-op rather than the actually difficulty of the achievements themselves[[/note]]. "Beam Me Up" challenges you to beat the first stage of either ''R-Type 1'' or ''2'' in Classic mode using ''only'' fully charged shots, without dying, and its counterpart "Dare Devil", which conversely requires you to beat stages 1 & 2 of ''R-Type 1'' in Classic mode using ''only'' rapid fire with no power-ups.[[note]]Admittedly, these only sound harder than they really are: "Beam Me Up" is permissive enough to allow you to shield yourself with the Force (as long you still only shoot charged shots) and mostly memorize the easiest level in the game, and in "Daredevil" you can cheese it by [[https://youtu.be/nkArgOolidE?si=oQx3G24hvUwSlmwP hiding in a safe zone when facing Gomander and stall the fight until it's over]]. Misplaced, moving to the correct tab

* IKnewIt: The demo for ''Final II'' features a frozen [[RecurringBoss Dobkeratops]] as the first stage's boss, with its chest doing all the attacking. The last trailer before the game's release features an unfrozen Dobkeratops in action, confirming fan speculation that there will be another form for Dobkeratops that can only be fought on higher difficulties (note that the demo allows the first stage to be played in difficulties up to Bydo instead of [[HarderThanHard R-Typer]]).

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: You are unlikely to hear this series be talked about by gamers born after 1995, who generally fail to see why this is a popular name amongst retro gamers who grew up with 80s and 90s games. But up through the early 2000s, this was one of the faces of {{Horizontal Scrolling Shooter}}s (with its main competitors being ''VideoGame/{{Gradius}}'' and ''VideoGame/{{Darius}}''), and perhaps shmups as a whole, due to its puzzle-like stage design and unique Force Pod mechanic. With its nitty-gritty aesthetic and checkpoint-based gameplay, the ''R-Type'' series has had difficulty attracting younger gamers, and despite modern releases like the ''R-Type Dimensions'' pack that consists of the first two games and ''R-Type Final 2'', those games tend to get glossed over.

On Second Thought, not necessarily the case. It did get glowing reviews around the time of its release

* VindicatedByHistory: ''R-Type Leo'' was panned at first simply for being a GaidenGame to ''R-Type'' that lacks some of its trademarks like the Force Pod and its punishing difficulty curve. However over time it has come to be better-received as a result of people discovering it through emulation. Between the snazzy colorful visuals and relaxing lounge soundtrack and the weapons all being fun to use in their own ways, many shmup fans have given it a second chance, to the point where now many fans wish that it would finally get a consumer port.
