* ValuesDissonance: Oriko's backstory focuses heavily on the Japanese idea that [[SinsOfTheFathers a criminal parent would have a criminal child]], whereas western nations ideally view each person individually. A criminal parent might be a matter of embarrassment or shame, but nowhere near the level of ostracization Oriko faced.

** Due to the art-style, some things are ''really'' hard to take seriously. For example, Yuma just saw her parents killed right in front of her, and she's wondering where she's going to go. It's a really sad scene, until... she makes [[http://www.mangareader.net/mahou-shoujo-oriko-magica/1/23 this]] face (bottom right panel).
** Madoka just saw [[spoiler:her teacher being eaten alive]], the witch familiars are attacking everyone, and has been separated from her friends... and reacts by [[http://www.mangareader.net/mahou-shoujo-oriko-magica/5/12 making a cutesy face]] (bottom left).
** Yuma's face [[http://www.mangareader.net/mahou-shoujo-oriko-magica/1/19 when she screams]] can be considered downright silly.

** Kirika is either CrazyAwesome and a great deconstruction of the ManicPixieDreamGirl, or a pile of {{Wangst}} who's nuts for no good reason. Her relationship with Oriko was either one of the best-explored romantic relationships of the series or really, really creepy (though few would call it a very healthy one).

* SurprisinglyImprovedSequel: Common consensus is that while the original is ''very'' rough, ''Extra Story'' and ''Sadness Prayer'' do a lot to improve on it, being less rushed, having better art, and filling out the characters significantly more, including making Oriko far more of the TragicMonster she was intended to be.

Added DiffLines:

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: The original manga definitely angles for Oriko as a TragicVillain who is trying to do the right thing in the worst possible way, but the rushed pacing and scattered plot left little room for characterization beyond "deluded KnightTemplar", even aside from her being the cause of the DownerEnding, and left some even viewing [[spoiler:her TogetherInDeath moment with Kirika]] as too generous for her. One of the main things ''Extra Story'' and ''Sadness Prayer'' seemingly set out to do was establish two things: in the former, that she ''does'' have the capacity to be a genuinely heroic person, and in the latter, that there were very good reasons why she ''wasn't'' a heroic person in the actual series.

** Just how justified Oriko was in her actions remains a topic of debate, particularly given that she's viewed as something of a martyr by people who dislike Homura. Her portrayal in fanfic varies between ALighterShadeOfGrey to a cackling murderer. Her design gets some of this as well; some find the PimpedOutDress and NiceHat to be probably the most beautiful outfit of any series, others think it looks silly and refer to her as "buckethead."

** Though some fans happily accept both, people who liked ''Manga/PuellaMagiKazumiMagica'' seem to hate ''Oriko'', and vice versa, given that they're very different takes. Fans of the ''Kazumi'' call the ''Oriko'' an [[OffModel ugly]], [[DoomedByCanon pointless]], meandering sidestory that does nothing new and borders on unreadability, versus a lengthy and detailed narrative with great art and tons of characters that stands on its own. Fans of ''Oriko'' call ''Kazumi'' a [[FetishRetardant skeevy]], [[OutOfFocus character-overstuffed]], overlong piece of pap that reads like a mix of a DolledUpInstallment and a bad fanfic, versus a dark and deconstructive tale that introduces the best {{Canon Foreigner}}s of the franchise and makes great use of the original material.

Was just reading Oriko Magica. While Madoka is distraught that Homura is only protecting her, Homura and Madoka were separated from Hitomi and Sayaka and the others so she couldn't have done anything since they weren't near her, and both Homura and Mami note that it's impossible to save everyone. After Homura explains her reasoning and puts her in a barrier for her protection, Madoka apologizes to her and promises to go home together; the witch from the panel resembles Kriemhild Gretchen's mountainous appearance with clouds swirling above her, so it doesn't resemble Devil Homura.

[[NecessarilyEvil Wracked with guilt by what she must do]], Oriko nevertheless [[TheUnfettered stops at nothing]], determined to save the world while outplaying everyone around her.
