** As mentioned in NintendoHard, the game suffers a similar problem to VideoGame/PokemonGoldAndSilver in that wild encounters have incredibly low levels, making raising Pokémon to be competitive for upcoming gym matches a tedious affair. This is only mitigated somewhat later due to gaining access to common grinding tools (the Exp. Share, the Vs. Seeker, and the Lucky Egg in that order), and the disparity between boss trainers' and everyone else's levels remains high throughout.

* JustHereForGodzilla: Because of how bizarre and comedic Machu's presence is, many are lured into trying out the game just to see it in action, especially those coming in after watching a video of the game on [=YouTube=].
* NintendoHard: Besides originally being in Japanese, this is probably the most notorious aspect of the game. Wild Pokémon and trainers are incredibly low-leveled, while important bosses such as Gym Leaders come at very ''high'' levels (compare the first gym's only gym trainer having a single level 10 Pineco to the gym leader Annette having a level ''15'' Shuckle as her ace, for example), often with incredible coverage to deal with any super-effective options you may throw out. This combined with limited team-building options means the player will be struggling throughout. It's to the point where there's an incredibly popular GameMod, Vega Minus, which is designed to smooth out the level curve along with a few additional AntiFrustrationFeatures.
